Stereoselective Bromoboration of Acetylene with Boron Tribromide: Preparation and Cross-Coupling Reactions of (Z)-Bromovinylboronates

Ligand Control of Copper-Mediated Cycloadditions of Acetylene to Azides: Chemo- and Regio-Selective Formation of Deutero- and Iodo-Substituted 1,2,3-Triazoles

The participation of σ-monocopper and σ-bis-copper acetylide in mechanistic pathways for copper-catalyzed cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions of acetylene with azides was probed by analysis of deuterium distributions in the 1,2,3-triazole product formed by deuterolysis of initially formed mono- and bis-copper triazoles. The results show that, when Cu(Phen)(PPh3)2NO3 is used as the catalyst for reactions of acetylene with azides in DMF/D2O, 1-substituted-5-deutero-1,2,3-triazoles are generated selectively. This finding demonstrates that the Cu(Phen)(PPh3)2NO3-catalyzed cycloadditions utilize monocopper acetylide as the substrate and produce 5-copper-1,2,3-triazoles initially. Conversely, when DBU or Et3N is the copper ligand, the process takes place through initial formation and cycloaddition of bis-copper acetylide to produce 4,5-bis-copper-triazole, which reacts with D2O to form the corresponding 4,5-bis-deutero-triazole. Moreover, when C2D2 is used as the substrate, Cu(Phen)(PPh3)2NO3 as the Cu ligand, and H2O/DMF as the solvent, mono-C4-deutreo 1,2,3-triazoles are generated in high yields and excellent levels of regioselectivity. Lastly, CuAAC reactions of acetylene with azides, promoted by CuCl2·2H2O and NaI, yield 4,5-diiodo-1,2,3-triazoles with moderate to high efficiencies.

A Chemoselective Polarity-Mismatched Photocatalytic C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) Cross-Coupling Enabled by Synergistic Boron Activation

We report the development of a C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) coupling reaction using styrene boronic acids and redox-active esters under photoredox catalysis. The reaction proceeds through an unusual polarity-mismatched radical addition mechanism that is orthogonal to established processes. Synergistic activation of the radical precursor and organoboron are critical mechanistic events. Activation of an N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) ester by coordination to boron enables electron transfer, with decomposition leading to a nucleofuge rebound, activating the organoboron to radical addition. The unique mechanism enables chemoselective coupling of styrene boronic acids in the presence of other alkene radical acceptors. The scope and limitations of the reaction, and a detailed mechanistic investigation are presented.

Mechanistic Analysis of Alkyne Haloboration: A DFT, MP2, and DLPNO-CCSD(T) Study

Stereocontrol of the alkyne haloboration reaction has received attention in many experimental but few theoretical studies. Here we present a detailed quantum-chemical study of mechanisms leading to Z versus E isomers of haloboration products, considering acetylene and propyne combined with BCl3, BBr3, and BI3. Calculations using B3LYP-D3, MP2, and DLPNO-CCSD(T) methods are used to study polar reactions between the alkyne and BX3 in the absence and presence of an additional halide anion whose content in the reaction mixture can be controlled experimentally. The formation of anti-haloboration products via radical mechanisms is also explored, namely, by adding BX3 to (Z)-halovinyl radical. For the anti-haloboration of propyne, the radical route is prohibited by the regiochemistry of the initiating halopropenyl radical, while the polar route is unlikely due to a competitive allene generation. In contrast, energetically accessible routes exist for both syn- and anti-bromoboration of acetylene; hence, careful control of reaction conditions is necessary to steer the stereochemical outcome. Methodologically, MP2 results correspond better to the DLPNO-CCSD(T) energies than the B3LYP-D3 results in terms of both reaction barrier heights and relative ordering of energetically close stationary points.

Different Performances of BF3, BCl3, and BBr3 in Hypervalent Iodine-Catalyzed Halogenations

Herein, hypervalent iodine-catalyzed halogenation of aryl-activated alkenes using BX₃ (X = Cl, Br) as the halogen source and activating reagents was reported. Various halogenated 1,3-oxazine/2-oxazoline derivatives were obtained in good-to-high yields. Using BF₃ resulted in different substitute sites from BBr₃ and BCl₃ of the products, indicating different reactive intermediates and reaction pathways. The reaction underwent a "ligand coupling/oxidative addition/intermolecular nucleophilic attack/1,2-aryl migration/reductive elimination/intramolecular nucleophilic attack" cascade when BF₃ was applied as the halogen source, while 1,2-aryl migration has "disappeared" when the halogen source was BBr₃ or BCl₃. Possible catalytic cycles were proposed, and DFT calculations were conducted to demonstrate the differences among BX₃ (X = F, Cl, Br) in the hypervalent iodine-catalyzed halogenations.

Haloboration: scope, mechanism and utility

Haloboration, the addition of B–X (X = Cl, Br, I) across an unsaturated moiety e.g., C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Y or C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Y (Y = C, N, etc.), is dramatically less utilised than the ubiquitous hydroboration reaction. However, haloboration of alkynes in particular is a useful tool to access ambiphilic 1,2-disubstituted alkenes. The stereochemical outcome of the reaction is easily controlled and the resulting products have proven to be valuable building blocks in organic synthesis and materials chemistry. This review aims at providing the reader with a brief summary of the historic development and of the current mechanistic understanding of this transformation. Recent developments are discussed and select examples demonstrating the use of haloboration products are given with a focus on the major areas, specifically, natural product synthesis and the development of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B-PAHs).

Haloboration is a mostly overlooked technique, yet it is a powerful way of transforming alkynes stereoselectively into difunctionalised ambiphilic alkenes, which readily undergo a plethora of highly useful subsequent reactions.

Free Radical Isomerizations in Acetylene Bromoboration Reaction

The experimentally motivated question of the acetylene bromoboration mechanism was addressed in order to suggest possible radical isomerization pathways for the syn-adduct. Addition-elimination mechanisms starting with a bromine radical attack at the "bromine end" or the "boron end" of the C=C bond were considered. Dispersion-corrected DFT and MP2 methods with the SMD solvation model were employed using three all-electron bases as well as the ECP28MWB ansatz. The rate-determining, elimination step had a higher activation energy (12 kcal mol-1) in case of the "bromine end" attack due to intermediate stabilization at both the MP2 and DFT levels. In case of the "boron end" attack, two modes of C-C bond rotation were followed and striking differences in MP2 vs. DFT potential energy surfaces were observed. Employing MP2, addition was followed by either a 180° rotation through an eclipsed conformation of vicinal bromine atoms or by an opposite rotation avoiding that conformation, with 5 kcal mol-1 of elimination activation energy. Within B3LYP, the addition and rotation proceeded simultaneously, with a 9 (7) kcal mol-1 barrier for rotation involving (avoiding) eclipsed conformation of vicinal bromines. For weakly bound complexes, ZPE corrections with MP2 revealed significant artifacts when diffuse bases were included, which must be considered in the Gibbs free energy profile interpretation.
