Divergent Synthesis of α-Aroyloxy Ketones and Indenones: A Controlled Domino Radical Reaction for Di- and Trifunctionalization of Alkynes

A HMPA-H2O mediated oxygenative carbocyclization of 2-alkynylphenyl-substituted p-quinone methides to indenones

Herein, we report a transition-metal and base-free protocol to access a wide range of functionalized indenone derivatives through a HMPA-H2O-mediated oxygenative annulation of 2-alkynylphenyl-substituted p-quinone methides. This method worked effectively for most of the p-QMs investigated and the corresponding indenone derivatives were obtained in moderate to good yields. This methodology was further extended to the formal synthesis of one of the resveratrol based natural products, (±)-isopaucifloral F.

Iron-Promoted Oxidative Alkylation/Cyclization of Ynones with 4-Alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines: Access to 2-Alkylated Indenones

An iron-promoted oxidative tandem alkylation/cyclization of ynones with 4-alkyl-substituted 1,4-dihydropyridines for the efficient synthesis of 2-alkylated indenones is described. The process occurs via oxidative homolysis of a C-C σ-bond in 1,4-dihydropyridines to generate an alkyl radical followed by the addition of C-C triple bonds in ynones and intramolecular cyclization. A wide range of alkyl radicals could be efficiently transferred to generate a series of synthetically useful 2-alkylated indenones with excellent selectivity under mild conditions.

Transition-metal-free approaches to 2,3-diarylated indenones from 2-alkynylbenzaldehydes and phenols with tunable selectivity

The first transition-metal-free regioselective synthesis of 2,3-diarylindenones via tandem annulation of 2-alkynylbenzaldehydes with phenols is described. Two different modes of reaction controlled by electronic effects and temperature furnished either "non-rearranged" or "rearranged" indenones in high selectivity.

Transition-metal-free oxidative cyclization reaction of enynals to access pyrane-2-one derivatives

A novel and efficient metal-free C-H functionalization of enynals is developed to synthesize α-pyrone derivatives via the formation of two C-O bonds. In this project, K₂S₂O₈ has been introduced as an efficient oxygen source and C-H functionalization agent in regioselective oxidative cyclization reaction with a relatively broad substrate scope.

Iron-Catalyzed α-C-H Cyanation of Simple and Complex Tertiary Amines

This manuscript details the development of a general and mild protocol for the α-C-H cyanation of tertiary amines and its application in late-stage functionalization. Suitable substrates include tertiary aliphatic, benzylic, and aniline-type substrates and complex substrates. Functional groups tolerated under the reaction conditions include various heterocycles and ketones, amides, olefins, and alkynes. This broad substrate scope is remarkable, as comparable reaction protocols for α-C-H cyanation frequently occur via free radical mechanisms and are thus fundamentally limited in their functional group tolerance. In contrast, the presented catalyst system tolerates functional groups that typically react with free radicals, suggesting an alternative reaction pathway. All components of the described catalyst system are readily available, allowing implementation of the presented methodology without the need for lengthy catalyst synthesis.

Trifunctionalization of alkenes and alkynes

In this review, the development of trifunctionalization methods for alkenes and alkynes, including arynes and allenes, over the last decade is disclosed.
