Photocatalytic decarboxylation of free carboxylic acids and their functionalization

Visible light mediated decarboxylative functionalization of carboxylic acids and their derivatives has recently emerged as a novel and powerful toolkit for small molecule activation in diverse carbon-carbon and carbon-hetero bond forming reactions. Naturally abundant highly functionalized bench-stable carboxylic acid analogs have been employed as promising alternatives to non-trivial organometallic reagents for mild and eco-benign synthetic transformation with traceless CO2 by-products. In this highlight article, we focus on the development of various photodecarboxylative functionalization strategies along with intra/inter-molecular cyclization via concerted single electron transfer (SET) or energy transfer (ET) pathways. Moreover, widely explored carboxylic acids are systematically classified here into four categories; i.e., α-keto, aliphatic, α,β-unsaturated, and aromatic analogs for a concise overview to the readership. The association of decarboxylative radical species with coupling partners to construct C-C and C-N/O/S/P/X bonds for each analogous acid has been presented in brief.

Visible-Light-Driven α-Substituted Amines Enabled by In Situ Formation of Amine Substrate Aggregates

A visible-light-driven, photocatalyst-free, air-promoted, α-substituted reaction of amines with varying nucleophiles is described. The amine substrate aggregates formed in situ through physical π-π stacking by H2O regulation in organic solvent can absorb visible light and then generate iminium ion intermediates, which undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with varying nucleophiles to afford α-substituted amines. This reaction features catalyst-free, good functional group tolerance, simple operation procedure, and green reaction conditions.

Temperature- and pH-Responsive Polymeric Photocatalysts for Enhanced Control and Recovery

The emergence of heterogeneous photocatalysis has facilitated redox reactions with high efficiency, without compromising the recyclability of the photocatalyst. Recently, stimuli-responsive heterogeneous photocatalytic materials have emerged as a powerful synthetic tool, with simple and rapid recovery, as well as an enhanced dynamic control over reactions. Stimuli-responsive polymers are often inexpensive and easy to produce. They can be switched from an active "on" state to an inert "off" state in response to external stimuli, allowing the production of photocatalyst with adaptability, recyclability, and orthogonal control on different chemical reactions. Despite this versatility, the application of artificial smart material in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis has not yet been maximized. In this Minireview, we will examine the recent developments of this emerging class of stimuli-responsive heterogeneous photocatalytic systems. We will discuss the synthesis route of appending photoactive components into different triggerable systems and, in particular, the controlled activation and recovery of the materials.

Organic Photoredox Catalysts Exhibiting Long Excited-State Lifetimes

Organic photoredox catalysts with a long excited-state lifetime have emerged as promising alternatives to transition-metal-complex photocatalysts. This paper explains the effectiveness of using long-lifetime photoredox catalysts for organic transformations, focusing on the structures and photophysics that enable long excited-state lifetimes. The electrochemical potentials of the reported organic, long-lifetime photocatalysts are compiled and compared with those of the representative Ir(III)- and Ru(II)-based catalysts. This paper closes by providing recent demonstrations of the synthetic utility of the organic catalysts.

Self-assembled aggregates of 7,10-dibromo-2,3-dicyanopyrazinophenanthrene which act as a new organophotocatalyst in combination with Ni catalyst for the Caryl–Oacyl cross-coupling reactions of carboxylic acids with aryl halides are described. This visible-light-induced Caryl–Oacyl bond-formation reaction proceeds smoothly to afford aryl esters with satisfactory to excellent yields.
