Abstract
The synthesis of thioether derivatives has been explored widely due to the potential application of these derivatives in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical industry and material chemistry. Within this context, there has been an increasing demand for the environmentally benign construction of C-S bonds via C-H functionalization under metal-free conditions. In the present article, we highlight recent developments in metal-free sulfenylation that have occurred in the past three years. The synthesis of organosulfur compounds via a metal-free approach using a variety of sulfur sources, including thiophenols, disulfides, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonyl chlorides, elemental sulfur and sulfinates, is discussed. Non-conventional strategies, which refer to the development of thioether derivatives under visible light and electrochemically mediated conditions, are also discussed. The key advantages of the reviewed methodologies include broad substrate scope and high reaction yields under environmentally benign conditions. This comprehensive review will provide chemists with a synthetic tool that will facilitate further development in this field.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced cross-dehydrogenative methodology has been developed for the regioselective sulfenylation of pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives. Rose bengal, blue LEDs, KI, K2S2O8, and DMSO are all essential for this photocatalytic transformation. The protocol is applicable for the synthesis of a library of 3-(aryl/heteroaryl thio)pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives with broad functionalities. The selectivity and scalability of the methodology have been also demonstrated. Moreover, the efficiency of this strategy for sulfenylation of pyrazoles, indole, imidazoheterocycles, and 4-hydroxy coumarin has been proven. The mechanistic investigation revealed the radical-based mechanism and formation of diaryl disulfide as a key intermediate for this cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction.

Abstract
A copper-promoted aerobic oxidative [3+2] cycloaddition reaction for the synthesis of various substituted pyrazoles from N,N-disubstituted hydrazines with alkynoates in the presence of bases is developed. This work involves a direct C(sp3)-H functionalization and the formation of new C-C/C-N bonds. In this strategy, inexpensive and easily available Cu2O serves as the promoter and air acts as the green oxidant. The reaction exhibits the advantages of high atom and step economy, high regioselectivity, and easy operation.

Abstract
A dimethyl sulfoxide-assisted and iodine/ascorbic acid-catalyzed simple approach to pyrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline thioether derivatives 22 is described. The compounds were identified using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. The pyrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline thioether was synthesized in a stepwise fashion through aryl sulfenylation and benzannulation strategies. The generated heteroaryl thioether compounds 23 were exposed to the benzannulation path to produce pyrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline thioether 22. The benzannulation reaction proceeds by way of diazotization of the pyrazole amine derivative 23, radical generation by the removal of nitrogen, and eventually trapping of the aryl radical with the support of phenylacetylene 19. A catalytic amount of ascorbic acid aided the benzannulation reaction. There were several other control studies conducted, including trapping reactions with isopropenyl acetate, tetramethylpiperidine N-oxyl reactions, and reactions without phenylacetylene. Since a change in the substitution has previously demonstrated substantial bioactivity, the core structure of pyrazole was evaluated for functional group tolerance. A reasonable mechanism is then proposed, accompanied by the support of control experiments and scope. A Suzuki reaction was used to create an aryl/heteroaryl compound 35 from one of the synthesized compounds 22b. In the controlled oxidation reaction paths, molecule 22a was selectively transformed into the corresponding sulfoxide 32 and sulfone 33.

Abstract
We developed an iodine-mediated cascade strategy to synthesize amino pyrazole thioether derivatives (11) in the absence of metals as well as solvents. The present approach provides amino pyrazole thioethers in a highly selective manner without the formation of diaryl sulfide and sulfenyl-enaminonitrile with broad substrate scope. The reactivity of nine sulfenylation sources and synthetic applications of the synthesized compounds have been demonstrated. Thus, the overall iodine-mediated multicomponent reaction (MCR) is more economically feasible, efficient, and environmentally benign.

Abstract
Sulfur-containing scaffold, as a ubiquitous structural motif, has been frequently used in natural products, bioactive chemicals and pharmaceuticals, particularly C-S/N-S bonds are indispensable in many biological important compounds and pharmaceuticals. Development of mild and general methods for C-S/N-S bonds formation has great significance in modern research. Iodine and its derivatives have been recognized as inexpensive, environmentally benign and easy-handled catalysts or reagents to promote the construction of C-S/N-S bonds under mild reaction conditions, with good regioselectivities and broad substrate scope. Especially based on this, several new strategies, such as oxidation relay strategy, have been greatly developed and accelerated the advancement of this field. This review focuses on recent advances in iodine and its derivatives promoted hybridized C-S/N-S bonds formation. The features and mechanisms of corresponding reactions are summarized and the results of some cases are compared with those of previous reports. In addition, the future of this domain is discussed.

Abstract
An iodine-catalyzed denitrative imino-diaza-Nazarov cyclization (DIDAN) methodology has been developed for the synthesis of pyrazoles with high to excellent yields by using α-nitroacetophenone derivatives and in situ generated hydrazones. The key transformation of this oxidative 4π-electrocyclization proceeds through an enamine-iminium ion intermediate. This rapid one-pot DIDAN protocol results in the selective generation of C-C and C-N bonds and cleavage of a C-N bond.

Abstract
A one-pot iodine-catalyzed multicomponent reaction has been developed for the selective preparation of 5-amino-4-(arylselanyl)-1H-pyrazoles from a diverse array of benzoylacetonitriles, arylhydrazines and diaryl diselenides. The reactions were conducted in MeCN as solvent at reflux temperature under air. The methodology presents a large functional group tolerance to electron-deficient, electron-rich, and bulky substituents and gave the expected products in good to excellent yields. The synthesized 1,3-diphenyl-4-(phenylselanyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-amine was submitted to an oxidative dehydrogenative coupling to produce a diazo compound confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract
In this paper, a highly efficient and sustainable synthesis of 2-aminobenzothiazoles through the cascade reactions of isothiocyanatobenzenes with primary or secondary amines by using iodine as a catalyst and oxygen as an oxidant is presented. Mechanistically, the formation of the title compounds involves the in situ formation of the required benzothiourea intermediate followed by its intramolecular cross dehydrogenative coupling of a C(sp2)-H bond and a S-H bond. To our knowledge, this should be the first example in which 2-aminobenzothiazoles are efficiently prepared from simple and cheap isothiocyanates and amines under metal-free conditions by using iodine as a catalyst and molecular oxygen as an oxidant with water as the byproduct. Compared with literature protocols, this method eliminates the use of ortho-halo-substituted precursors, expensive transition-metal catalysts, and hazardous oxidants.

Abstract
Readily available triethylammonium thiolates were proven to be new and eco-friendly sulfenylating agents for the efficient and practical construction of sulfenylated indoles and pyrroles (48 examples) with good to excellent yields under metal-free and microwave irradiation conditions. The combination of I2 and DMSO enabled direct C-S bond formation, allowing easy and low-cost access to new functionalized C,S-tethered bisindoles and pyrrole-indole pairs with a wide diversity of substituents. The mechanism involving S-S and S-I bond-forming/breaking events was proposed.
