Abstract
A route for the preparation of merged symmetrical tetrahydroisoquinolines with central chirality through a rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition involving enantiopure triynes as substrates is described. The results show that linear triynes lacking a 3-atom tether can undergo efficient cyclisation. The N-tethered 1,7,13-triynes used in our approach were easily prepared from readily accessible chiral homopropargyl amides, the basic building blocks in our approach, which were efficiently obtained by diastereoselective addition of propargyl magnesium bromide to Ellman imines. Additional substitution at the benzene rings could be attained when substituted triynes at the terminal triple bonds were employed, giving access to more complex tetrahydroisoquinolines after the rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition. Among the different transition-metal catalysts, the Wilkinson complex (RhCl(PPh3)3) afforded higher yields in the cyclisation of linear triynes; however, triynes bearing a Br substituent at the terminal positions underwent the cyclisation more efficiently in the presence of [RhCl(CO)2]2.

Abstract
[2+2+2] Cycloaddition reactions belong to the not even large class of reactions, which can be catalyzed or mediated by a significant number of different transition metals. Cobalt complexes belong to the catalysts that paved the way for the extensive use and profound mechanistic knowledge on this particular transformation. Beside the established role, cyclopentadienyl (Cp) cobalt complexes inherit in synthetic applications of the cyclotrimerization reaction, modification of the precatalysts opened up novel reactivities and versatility for such catalytic initiators. At the same time the development of in situ generated cobalt catalysts allowed the conversion of novel substrates as well as novel reaction modes to be realized. In this personal account recent developments will be presented and the possibilities of catalysts containing cobalt atoms in different oxidation states be discussed.

Abstract
A convoluted poly(4-vinylpyridine) cobalt(II) (P4VP-CoCl2) system was developed as a stable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst. The local structure near the Co atom was determined on the basis of experimental data and theoretical calculations. This immobilized cobalt catalyst showed high selectivity and catalytic activity in the [2 + 2 + 2] cyclotrimerization of terminal aryl alkynes. With 0.033 mol % P4VP-CoCl2, the regioselective formation of 1,3,5-triarylbenzene was realized without 1,2,4-triarylbenzene formation. Further, a multigram-scale (11 g) reaction proceeded efficiently. In addition, the polymer-supported catalyst was successfully recovered and used three times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the recovered catalyst suggested that cobalt was in the +2 oxidation state. The 1,3,5-triarylbenzene derivatives were applied to the synthesis of a molecular beam electron resist and a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.

Abstract
A Co(II)-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction of alkynyl ketones and 2-acetylpyridines using 2,2'-bipyridine as the ligand has been developed. These reactions have been realized through Co-catalyzed reductive coupling of two molecules of 2-acetylpyridine followed by regioselective insertion of the alkynone. It is the first example of regioselective cyclotrimerization of one molecule of alkyne and two molecules of monoketone to polysubstituted benzene derivatives in good to excellent yields. A mechanism involving the formation of a cobaltacyclopentane via homocoupling of 2-acetylpyridines is proposed, and it is supported by the DFT calculations.

Abstract
The transition-metal-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of nitriles and alkynes is an established synthetic approach to pyridines; however, these cycloadditions often rely on the use of tethered diynes or cyanoalkynes as one of the reactants. Thus, examples of efficient, fully intermolecular catalytic [2+2+2] pyridine synthesis, especially those employing unactivated nitriles and internal alkynes leading to pentasubstituted pyridines, remain scarce. Herein, we report on simple and inexpensive catalytic systems based on cobalt(II) iodide, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, and Zn that promote [2+2+2] cycloaddition of various nitriles and diarylacetylenes for the synthesis of a broad range of polyarylated pyridines. DFT studies support a reaction pathway involving oxidative coupling of two alkynes, insertion of the nitrile into a cobaltacyclopentadiene, and C-N reductive elimination. The resulting tetra- and pentaarylpyridines serve as precursors to hitherto unprecedented nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via mechanochemically assisted multifold reductive cyclodehydrogenation.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed highly regioselective and chemoselective intermolecular cyclization of 2,7-alkadiynylic carbonates with terminal propargyl tertiary alcohols to construct benzopolycycles containing furan and pyrrole moieties has been developed with a very broad scope. Polycycles containing spirane structures or dispirane structures could be also smoothly synthesized in moderate to good yields. The reaction enjoys excellent regioselectivity.

Abstract
The robust CoI precatalyst [CpCo(P{OEt}3)(trans-MeO2CHC=CHCO2Me)] was investigated in cyclotrimerizations, furnishing benzenes and pyridines from triynes, diynes and nitriles, comparing the influence of different ways of energy supply; namely, irradiation and conventional (thermal) or microwave heating. The precatalyst was found to work under all conditions, including the possibility to catalyze cyclotrimerizations at room temperature under photochemical conditions at longer reaction times. Performance of the reactions in a microwave reactor proved to be the most time-efficient way to rapidly assemble the expected reaction products; however, careful selection of reaction conditions can be required. The synthesis of pyridines and isoquinolines successfully involved the utilization of versatile functionalized nitriles, affording structurally interesting reaction products. Comparison with the known and often applied precatalyst CpCo(CO)2 demonstrated the significantly higher reactivity of the CpCoI-phosphite-olefin precatalyst.

Abstract
We report a detailed study concerning the efficient generation of highly active chiral rhodium complexes of the general structure [Rh(diphosphine)(solvent)2 ]+ as well as their exemplary successful utilization as catalysts for cyclotrimerizations. Such solvent complexes could likewise be prepared from novel ammonia complexes of the type [Rh(diphosphine)(NH3 )2 ]+ . A valuable, feasible approach to generate novel chiral RhI complexes was found by in situ generation from Wilkinson's catalyst [RhCl(PPh3 )3 ] with chiral P,N ligands. The generated catalysts led to moderate to good enantioselectivities and excellent yields in the cyclotrimerizations of triynes, showcasing their usefulness in the synthesis of axially chiral benzene derivatives.

Abstract
The reaction between the bis(ethylene) complex [TpRh(C2 H4 )2 ], 1, (Tp=hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate), and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) has been studied under different experimental conditions. A mixture of products was formed, in which TpRh(I) species were prevalent, whereas the presence of trapping agents, like water or acetonitrile, allowed for the stabilization and isolation of octahedral TpRh(III) compounds. An excess of DMAD gave rise to a small amount of the [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization product hexamethyl mellitate (6). Although no catalytic application of 1 was achieved, mechanistic insights shed light on the formation of stable rhodium species representing the resting state of the catalytic cycle of rhodium-mediated [2+2+2] cyclo(co)trimerization reactions. Metallacyclopentene intermediate species, generated from the activation of one alkyne and one ethylene molecule from 1, and metallacyclopentadiene species, formed by oxidative coupling of two alkynes to the rhodium centre, are crucial steps in the pathways leading to the final organometallic and organic products.
