Abstract
The mechanisms and regio-, chemo-, and stereoselectivity were theoretically investigated in the Rh(III)-catalyzed [5 + 1] annulation of 2-alkenylanilides and 2-alkylphenols with allenyl acetates. Two different reactants, 2-alkenylanilides and 2-alkylphenols, were selected as model systems in the density functional theory calculations. The obtained theoretical results show that both these reactants exhibit similar steps, namely, (1) N-H/O-H deprotonation and C-H activation, (2) allenyl acetate migratory insertion, (3) β-oxygen elimination, (4) intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the nitrogen/oxygen-rhodium bond resulting in [5 + 1]-annulation, and (5) protonation with the formation of the desired product and regeneration of the Rh(III) catalyst. The theoretical evidence suggests that the selectivity is determined at the step of allenyl acetate's migratory insertion. Moreover, the regioselectivity is driven by electronic effects, while the interaction energies (C-H···π and C-H···O interactions) play a more imperative role in controlling the stereoselectivity. The obtained theoretical results not only well rationalize the experimental observations but also provide important mechanistic insights for related types of [5 + 1]-annulation reactions.

Abstract
The 6/6/5-fused tricyclic scaffold is a central feature of structurally complex terpenoid natural products. A step-economical cascade transformation that leads to a complex molecular skeleton is regarded as a sustainable methodology. Therefore, we report the first Mn(I)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H chemoselective in situ dienylation and diastereoselective intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction using iso-pentadienyl carbonate to access 6/6/5-fused tricyclic scaffolds. To the best of our knowledge, there is no such report thus far to utilize iso-pentadienyl carbonate as a substrate in C-H activation catalysis. Extensive mechanistic studies, such as the isolation of catalytically active organo-manganese(I) complexes, 1,3-dienyl-intermediates, and isotopic labeling experiments have supported the proposed mechanism of this cascade reaction.

Abstract
Computational studies on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation and functionalization at group 8-10 transition metal centers are reviewed. This Review is organized by metal and will cover work published from late 2009 until mid-2016. A brief overview of computational work prior to 2010 is also provided, and this outlines the understanding of carboxylate-assisted C-H activation in terms of the "ambiphilic metal-ligand assistance" (AMLA) and "concerted metalation deprotonation" (CMD) concepts. Computational studies are then surveyed in terms of the nature of the C-H bond being activated (C(sp2)-H or C(sp3)-H), the nature of the process involved (intramolecular with a directing group or intermolecular), and the context (stoichiometric C-H activation or within a variety of catalytic processes). This Review aims to emphasize the connection between computation and experiment and to highlight the contribution of computational chemistry to our understanding of catalytic C-H functionalization based on carboxylate-assisted C-H activation. Some opportunities where the interplay between computation and experiment may contribute further to the areas of catalytic C-H functionalization and applied computational chemistry are identified.
