Abstract
α-Aminoalkylation of sulfonylarenes with alkylamines was found to be induced by photoirradiation. Here various types of alkylamines, such as trialkylamines, dialkylamines, N,N-dialkylanilines and N-alkylanilines as well as sulfonylarenes containing an azole, azine, heterole or benzene ring are available. The reaction proceeds through a homolytic aromatic substitution (HAS) process consisting of addition of an α-aminoalkyl radical to a sulfonylarene and elimination of the sulfonyl radical to give the α-arylalkylamine, where photoirradiation is considered to induce homolysis of sulfonylarenes leading to the generation of α-aminoalkyl radicals that make a radical chain operative.

Abstract
Photoinduced hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) has been developed as a powerful tool to generate synthetically valuable radical species. The direct photoexcitation of ketones has been known to promote HAT or to generate acyl radicals through Norrish-type pathways, but these modalities remain severely limited by radical side reactions. We report herein a catalyst- and transition metal-free method for the acylation of C-H bonds that leverages the unique properties of stable, isolable acyl azolium species. Specifically, acyl azolium salts are shown to undergo an intermolecular and regioselective HAT upon LED irradiation with a range of substrates bearing active C-H bonds followed by C-C bond formation to afford ketones. Experimental and computational studies support photoexcitation of the acyl azolium followed by facile intersystem crossing to access triplet diradical species that promote selective HAT and radical-radical cross-coupling.

Abstract
The late-stage introduction of diverse heterocycles onto complex small molecules enables efficient access to new medicinally relevant compounds. An attractive approach to such a transformation would utilize the ubiquitous aliphatic C-H bonds of a complex substrate. Herein, we report a system that enables direct C-H heteroarylation using a stable, commercially available O-alkenylhydroxamate with heterocyclic sulfone partners. The C-H heteroarylation proceeds efficiently with a range of aliphatic substrates and common heterocycles, and is a rare example of heteroarylation of strong C-H bonds. Importantly, the present approach is amenable to late-stage functionalization as the substrate is the limiting reagent in all cases.

Abstract
A synthetically beneficial visible-light-mediated protocol has been disclosed to achieve C-H amination of readily available feedstocks cyclic and acyclic ethers. A rarely identified N-bromosuccinamide-tetrahydrofuran electron donor-acceptor complex served as an initiator to functionalize both α-diazoketones and dialkyl azodicarboxylates. This developed methodology gives an alternative and milder way to construct the C-N bond and can be explored for the formation of C-C bond to perform arylation and allylation reactions.

Abstract
The synthesis of unnatural, tertiary amino acids is a challenging task. While decarboxylation-radical addition has been an important strategy for their formation, the use of alkyl radicals from C(sp3)-H bonds has not been fully explored. Herein, we report a photocatalytic protocol for the synthesis of unnatural α-amino esters employing abundant alkanes and imines retaining full atom economy. When this method is applied, several amino acid derivatives are synthesized in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
A metal-free α-aminomethylation of heteroaryls promoted by eosin Y under green light irradiation is reported. A large variety of α-trimethylsilylamines as precursor of α-aminomethyl radical species were engaged to functionalize sulfonyl-heteroaryls following a Homolytic Aromatic Substitution (HAS) pathway. This method has provided a range of α-aminoheteroaryl compounds including a functionalized natural product. The mechanism of this late-stage functionalization of aryls was investigated and suggests the formation of a sulfonyl radical intermediate over a reductive quenching cycle.

Abstract
This manuscript reports the development of a mild, highly functional group tolerant and metal-free C–H aminoalkylation of azoles via a three-component coupling approach. This method enables the C–H functionalization of diverse azole substrates, such as oxazoles, benzoxazoles, thiazoles, benzothiazoles, imidazoles, and benzimidazoles. DFT calculations identify a key deprotonation equilibrium in the mechanism of the reaction. Using DFT as a predictive tool, the C–H aminoalkylation of initially unreactive substrates (imidazoles/benzimidazoles) can be enabled through an in situ protecting/activating group strategy. The DFT-supported mechanistic pathway proposes key interactions between the azole substrate and the Lewis acid/base pair TBSOTf/EtNiPr2 that lead to azole activation by deprotonation, followed by C–C bond formation between a carbene intermediate and an iminium electrophile. Two diverse approaches are demonstrated to explore the amine substrate scope: (i) a DFT-guided predictive analysis of amine components that relates reactivity to distortion of the iminium intermediates in the computed transition state structures; and (ii) a parallel medicinal chemistry workflow enabling synthesis and isolation of several diversified products at the same time. Overall, the presented work enables a metal-free approach to azole C–H functionalization via Lewis acid mediated azole C–H deprotonation, demonstrating the potential of a readily available, Si-based Lewis acid to mediate new C–C bond formations. Lewis acid mediated activation enables mild, metal-free, and highly functional group tolerant C–H aminoalkylation of diverse azoles via three-component coupling.![]()

Abstract
The K2S2O8-mediated hydroxyalkylation of 2H-benzothiazoles with aliphatic alcohols in aqueous solution was described. The mild and convenient protocol generated a series of hydroxyalkylated benzothiazoles in moderate to good yields. Besides, benzimidazole and ethers were also compatible in this reaction, leading to corresponding C2 ether-substituted heteroarenes.

Abstract
Minisci alkylation is of prime importance for its applicability in functionalizing diverse heteroarenes, which are core structures in many bioactive compounds. In alkyl radical generation processes, precious metal catalysts, high temperatures and excessive oxidants are generally involved, which lead to sustainability and safety concerns. Herein we report a new strategy using diacetyl (2,3-butanedione) as an abundant, visible light-sensitive and "traceless" hydrogen atom abstractor to achieve metal-free cross-dehydrogenative Minisci alkylation under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies supported hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) between an activated C(sp3)-H substrate and diacetyl. Moreover, with the assistance of di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), the scope of the reaction could be extended to strong aliphatic C-H bonds via diacetyl-mediated energy transfer. The robustness of this strategy was demonstrated by functionalizing complex molecules such as quinine, fasudil, nicotine, menthol and alanine derivatives.

Abstract
We present a highly regio- and chemoselective Csp3-H arylation of benzylamines mediated by synergy of single electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis. Under well precedented SET catalysis alone, the arylation reaction of N,N-dimethylbenzylamine proceeded via aminium radical cation formation and selectively targeted the N-methyl group. In contrast, addition of PhC(O)SH as a HAT catalyst precursor completely switched the regioselectivity to Csp3-H arylation at the N-benzylic position. Measurement of oxidation potentials indicated that the conjugate base of PhC(O)SH is oxidized in preference to the substrate amine. The discovery of the thiocarboxylate as a novel HAT catalyst allowed for the selective generation of the sulfur-centered radical, so that the N-benzyl selectivity was achieved by overriding the inherent N-methyl and/or N-methylene selectivity under SET catalysis conditions. While visible light-driven α-C-H functionalization of amines has mostly been demonstrated with aniline derivatives and tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs), our method is applicable to a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary benzylamines for efficient N-benzylic C-H arylation. Functional group tolerance was high, and various 1,1-diarylmethylamines, including an α,α,α-trisubstituted amine, were obtained in good to excellent yield (up to 98%). Importantly, the reaction is applicable to late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
In recent years, photochemistry has been a highly active research field. This renaissance is linked to the upsurge of photoredox catalysis, a versatile platform for synthetic methodologies using visible light photons as a traceless reagent. In contrast with UV, visible light constitutes almost half of the ground solar irradiance, making the use of solar light in chemistry a sustainable and viable possibility. However, the direct use of sunlight to power chemical reactions is still little explored. This can be explained by both the hurdles associated with solar radiation (e.g., its variability, irreproducibility, high IR content, etc.) and the need for a specialized photoreactor. Most of these issues can be tackled with technological solutions, and especially with the recourse to flow chemistry. Flow chemistry goes hand in hand with photochemistry thanks to the uniform irradiation it provides to the reaction. Furthermore, a continuous-flow reactor can be easily integrated with different solar collectors (including compound parabolic concentrators and luminescent solar concentrators) and constitutes the most efficient approach to solar photochemistry. After a description of the characteristics of the solar radiation relevant to chemistry, this chapter critically describes the different type of solar photoreactors and their applications in synthetic organic chemistry. Finally, an outlook on the future of solar photochemistry in flow is included.

Abstract
The adoption of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) in a photocatalytic approach, in which an excited catalyst is responsible for substrate activation, offers unique opportunities in organic synthesis, enabling the straightforward activation of R-H (R = C, Si, S) bonds in desired reagents. Either a direct strategy, based on the intrinsic reactivity of a limited number of photocatalysts in the excited state, or an indirect one, in which a photocatalytic cycle is used for the generation of a thermal hydrogen abstractor, can be exploited. This microreview summarizes the most recent advances (mainly from the last two years) in this rapidly developing area of research, collecting the selected examples according to the nature of the species promoting the HAT process. From the synthetic point of view, this area has led to the development of a plethora of strategies for C-C, C-Si, C-N, C-S, and C-halogen (particularly, fluorine) bond formation, as well as for oxidation reactions.

Abstract
The synthesis of alkylated pyrimidines was achieved via benzophenone-mediated photoinduced coupling between saturated heterocycles and sulfonylpyrimidines. The pyrimidine ring was selectively introduced at the nonacidic C(sp3)-H bond proximal to heteroatoms including oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. This is a coupling reaction mediated solely by photoexcited benzophenone, an organic molecule, without the aid of any metallic catalysts or reagents.
