Abstract
Benzopyrans (BZPs) are among the most privileged and influential small O-heterocycles that form the core of many natural compounds, commercial drugs, biological compositions, agrochemicals, and functional materials. BZPs are divided into six general categories including coumarins, chromans, 2H-chromenes, 4H-chromenes, chromones, and 4-chromanones, each of which is abundant in many plants and foods. These oxygenated heterocyclic compounds are fascinating motifs and have extensive applications in biology and materials science. Hence, numerous efforts have been made to develop innovative approaches for their extraction and synthesis. However, most of them are step-by-step or multi-step strategies that suffer from waste material generation and a tedious extraction process. Isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions (I-MCRs) offer a highly efficient method for overcoming these problems. The I-MCR is a simple and environmentally friendly one-pot domino procedure that does not require intermediate isolation or workup and is generally more efficient in material usage. This review covers all research articles related to I-MCRs for synthesizing BZP derivatives from the beginning to the middle of the year 2023. This strategy will be useful for organic and pharmaceutical chemists to design new drugs and optimize the synthesis steps of biological compounds and commercial drugs with benzopyran cores.

Abstract
An unprecedented protocol has been developed for the preparation of highly functionalized chromeno[4,3-b]pyrrol-4(1H)-ones, which are not only valuable architectures of many biologically active molecules but also key building blocks for rich photophysical properties. The transformation proceeded through chemoselective intermolecular α-carbon nucleophilic attacking/ring-opening/Michael addition/deprotonation aromatization processes from 4-aminocoumarins and 2-furylcarbinols.

Abstract
A domino approach to bridged cycloocta[b]indolone through a cascade of aza-Piancatelli rearrangement/Friedel-Crafts alkylation is developed. This transformation has been realized by reaction of an indole-tethered 2-furylcarbinol and substituted aniline in the presence of a Lewis acid to initiate aza-Piancatelli rearrangement followed by an in situ intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation to access bridged tetracyclic frameworks in one pot.

Abstract
We describe a methodology for the synthesis of extended aromatic structures through dehydrative C-C coupling from readily accessible diols. Treatment of the diols with a Brønsted acid ( para-toluenesulfonic acid) induces the nucleophilic addition of an arene or heteroarene, yielding fully aromatic products in high to quantitative yields with thiophenes, furan, indole, and N, N-dimethylaniline as coupling partners. The C-C coupling reactions proceed under mild, open flask conditions and offer high atom economy, while providing an attractive alternative approach to metal-catalyzed cross-coupling.

Abstract
A divergent synthetic strategy to functionalize the indole nucleus with readily available 2-furylcarbinols was developed. It was found that the 3-(4-oxo-2-cyclopentenyl)indoles were obtained in moderate to good yields (up to 89%) through Piancatelli reaction catalyzed by ZnCl2, whereas employment of Brønsted acid TFA afforded directly coupled product 3-(2-furyl)indoles in moderate to good yields (up to 87%) via the deprotonation-rearomatization route.

Abstract
The reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) with arenes in superacidic trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid, TfOH) as the solvent at room temperature for 1–24 h gives rise to 5-arylmethylfurfurals (yields of 17–91%) and 2-arylmethyl-5-(diarylmethyl)furans (yields of 10–37%). The formation of these two types of reaction products depends on the nucleophilicity of the arene. The same reactions under the action of acidic zeolites H-USY in high pressure tubes at 130 °C for 1 h result in the formation of only 5-arylmethylfurfurals (yields of 45–79%). 2,5-Diformylfuran (2,5-DFF) in the reaction with arenes under the action of AlBr3 at room temperature for 1 h leads to 5-(diarylmethyl)furfurals (yields of 51–90%). The reactive protonated species of 5-HMF and 2,5-DFF were characterized by NMR spectroscopy in TfOH and studied by DFT calculations. These reactions show possibilities of organic synthesis based on biomass-derived 5-HMF and 2,5-DFF.
