Protonation Dependent Topological Dichotomy of Core Modified Hexaphyrins: Synthesis, Characterization, and Excited State Dynamics

Phenanthrene-Incorporated Isoamethyrin: A Near-Planar Macrocycle That Display Enhanced Aromaticity via Protonation-Triggered Conformation Changes

Controlling the aromaticity in expanded porphyrins is a forefront research topic, and the strategy of using protonation-triggered conformational changes to fine-tune electronic properties and aromaticity has yet to be generalized in rigid and planar expanded porphyrins. Here, we synthesized phenanthrene-incorporated isoamethyrins that possess near-planar conformations and nonaromatic characters. However, when methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was added, geometric deformations occurred to minimize the unfavorable strain, resulting in macrocycles that were weakly aromatic as a whole.

Tailor-made aromatic porphyrinoids with NIR absorption

The highlight of this article is the recent progress in the state-of-the-art synthetic design and isolation of artificial porphyrinoids by swapping pyrrole component(s) with diverse functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/carbacycle building block(s) to compare the impact on the electronic absorption spectra and aromaticity of the incorporated isomeric/expanded porphyrinoids. Attention has been directed towards five distinct criteria of utilizing functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/aromatic hydrocarbons as synthons for NIR absorbing aromatic isomeric (N-confusion)/expanded porphyrinoids (with five/six heterocycles): (i) fused or annelated pyrrole (heterocycle), (ii) functionalized bi-pyrrole/bi-thiophene/bi-furan building blocks, (iii) azulene based carbacycle building block, (iv) vinylogous aromatic carbacycle/heterocycle(s) building block and (v) N-confused pyrrole ring(s), and N-confused fused pyrrole ring(s) leading to π-extension. These hybrid porphyrinoids are ideal candidates for basic research into macrocyclic aromaticity and for many potential applications owing to NIR absorption.

Triphenylamine/4,4'-Dimethoxytriphenylamine-Functionalized Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene Fluorophores with a High Quantum Efficiency: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

A wide series of 10 new triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-functionalized thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) fluorophores, 4a-e and 5a-e, bearing different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents (-PhCN, -PhF, -PhOMe, -Ph, and -C₆H₁₃) at the terminal thienothiophene units were designed and synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated by experimental and computational studies. Solid-state fluorescent quantum yields were recorded to be from 20 to 69%, and the maximum solution-state quantum efficiency reached 97%. Moreover, the photophysical characterization of the novel chromophores demonstrated a significant Stokes shift, reaching 179 nm with a bathochromic shift. They exhibited tuning color emission from orange to dark blue in solution and showed fluorescence lifetime reaching 4.70 ns. The relationship between triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-derived triarylamines and different functional groups on thieno[3,2-b] thiophene units was discussed.

Inverted and fused expanded heteroporphyrins

Expanded heteroporphyrins are a class of porphyrin macrocycles containing pyrrole, thiophene, furan, selenophene and other heterocyclic rings that are connected to form an internal ring pathway containing a minimum of 17 atoms and more than 18 delocalized π electrons in their conjugated macrocyclic framework. Considering that expanded heteroporphyrins are large in size, these macrocycles are structurally flexible and prefer to adopt various conformations in which one or more pyrrole(s)/heterocycle(s) tend to be in an inverted conformation and pointed outward from the centre of the macrocyclic core. The inverted expanded heteroporphyrins are divided into two classes as follows: (1) N-inverted expanded heteroporphyrins and (2) hetero-atom inverted expanded heteroporphyrins. Both inverted expanded heteroporphyrins show quite unique features in terms of their structure, aromaticity, and electronic and coordination properties. Sometimes, inverted expanded heteroporphyrins lead to the formation of fused expanded heteroporphyrins because of the intramolecular fusion of the pyrrole "N" with the "C" of the inverted heterocycle ring, which also exhibit unique features compared to inverted expanded heteroporphyrins. In this review, we attempt to describe the synthesis, structure, and aromatic, electronic and coordination properties of inverted and fused expanded heteroporphyrins. This review covers the synthesis, structure and properties of inverted and fused expanded heteroporphyrins containing a combination of pyrrole/heterocycle rings starting with five pyrrole/heterocycle-containing pentaphyrins, and then expanded heteroporphyrins containing six, seven, eight and more pyrrole/heterocyclic rings in their porphyrin macrocyclic framework.

Carbazole-Containing Carbadecaphyrins: Non-aromatic Expanded Porphyrins that Undergo Proton-Triggered Conformational Changes

A pair of meso-unsubstituted expanded carbaporphyrins containing two carbazole moieties were prepared in high isolated yields (82 and 76 %, respectively). The two macrocycles, namely 3 and 4, differ with respect to their substitution at the carbazole N-atoms i. e. by H and i-Bu, respectively. As prepared in their free-base forms, macrocycles 3 and 4 adopt figure-of-eight conformations and are best characterized as 40 π-electron, non-aromatic species possessing a decaphyrin(1.1.0.0.0.1.1.0.0.0) skeleton. Protonation of 3 with either trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or perchloric acid (HClO₄ ) produces a parallelogram-shaped structure. A similar structure is produced when N-functionalized system 4 is treated with TFA. In contrast, protonation of 4 with HClO₄ leads it to adopt a twisted Möbius strip-like structure in the solid state, thus allowing access to three distinct conformational states as a function of the conditions.

Redox-Associated Variation of Hückel Aromaticity from Lactam-Embedded Smallest Antiaromatic trans-Doubly N-Confused Porphyrins: Synthesis and Characterization

High-yield synthesis, spectroscopic and solid-state structural proof of the lactam-embedded smallest ever metal-free stable Hückel antiaromatic trans-doubly N-confused [16] porphyrins are reported. These new facets of trans-doubly N-confused porphyrins have been anticipated to exhibit the redox-associated variation of Hückel aromaticity as a mere consequence of the amido-like structures of the N-confused N-methyl pyrrole rings of the macrocycles. Strong aromaticity upon NaBH₄ reduction leading to a resonance dipolar structure of the [18]π-conjugated system as the reduced congener with concomitant Hückel topology are the important highlights. Excellent agreement between experimental spectroscopic measurements and the theoretically determined properties elucidate aromaticity switching upon chemical reduction. Recent years have witnessed an upsurge of demand for the experimental realization of stable antiaromatic systems because of their versatile applications in material science. The conformational rigidity and the enriched stability of these novel 16π antiaromatic doubly N-confused porphyrins might entitle these macrocycles toward such applications.

Three-Dimensional Fully Conjugated Carbaporphyrin Cage

A fully conjugated three-dimensional (3D) expanded carbaporphyrin (2) was prepared in a one-pot procedure that involves a [2+4] condensation reaction between a dibenzo[ g, p]chrysene-bearing tetrapyrrole precursor (1) and pentafluorobenzaldehyde, followed by oxidation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 2 possesses a cage-like structure consisting of four dipyrromethenes and two bridging dibenzo[ g, p]chrysene units. As prepared, 2 is nonaromatic as inferred from UV-vis-NIR and ¹H NMR spectroscopy and a near-zero (-1.75) nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) value. In contrast, after protonation with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the cage gains global aromatic character as inferred from the large negative NICS value (-11.63) and diatropic ring current observed in the anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) plot, as well as the ca. 8-fold increase in the excited state lifetime. In addition, the size of the cavity increases to ca. 143 ų upon protonation as deduced from a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. To our knowledge, this is the largest carbaporphyrin prepared to date and the first with a fully conjugated 3D cage structure whose size and electronic features may be tuned through protonation.

Reversible π-system switching of thiophene-fused thiahexaphyrins by solvent and oxidation/reduction

The concept of chemical topology has generated considerable interest among chemists and one of the state-of-the-art topics is Möbius topology in cyclic π-conjugated molecules. In this regard, expanded porphyrins have been extensively studied because of their facile topological interconversions and attractive optoelectronic properties. A typical example involves [28]hexaphyrins: they show topological conversion between planar Hückel and twisted Möbius topologies owing to their flexible structure. With this in mind, we designed a [28]hexaphyrin where one dimethine pyrrole unit was replaced with dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophene (β-DTT), aiming at a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-systems by a change in molecular topologies. Considering that the β-DTT unit can offer both macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits, we envisioned that a combination of the topological interconversion of [28]hexaphyrin with the two π-circuits of the β-DTT unit would enable a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits on Möbius and Hückel topologies, respectively, by a simple conformational change. Unexpectedly, the hexaphyrin revealed a unique, unprecedented π-system switching between a Möbius cross-conjugated π-system and a Hückel antiaromatic π-system, which was fully supported by both experimental and theoretical investigations. Meanwhile, the [28]hexaphyrin was also found to be redox interconvertible with the corresponding [26]hexaphyrin with a Hückel cross-conjugated π-system. These results demonstrate that the β-DTT unit is a new effective motif to realize π-system switching by changing molecular and π-system topologies. Importantly, external stimuli, i.e., solvent, as well as oxidation/reduction can be used to trigger the topological changes in expanded porphyrins with the help of the β-DTT unit.

Ethynylene-linked Figure-Eight Octaphyrin(1.2.1.1.1.2.1.1): Synthesis and Characterization of Its Two Oxidation States

An octaphyrin(1.2.1.1.1.2.1.1) containing two conjugated ethynylene bridges has been synthesized and characterized. The macrocycle reveals complex conformational dynamics dependent on its protonation and oxidation state. The [40]annulenoid macrocycle and its [38]annulenoid oxidized form display residual macrocyclic ring currents. In spite of its low apparent aromaticity the new octaphyrin is a potent chromophore with a vis-NIR absorption profile strongly influenced by the redox and acid-base chemistry.
