Abstract
A metal-free approach for the synthesis of tetrahydroindolo[2,3-b]carbazoles has been developed through an acid-mediated one-pot [3 + 3]-annulation of 2-indolylmethanols and 3-indolyl-substituted para-quinone methides. This operationally simple protocol allowed us to prepare many unsymmetrical tetrahydroindolo[2,3-b]carbazoles in good to excellent yields with a broad substrate scope. This concept was also elaborated to the synthesis of tetrahydrothieno[2,3-b]carbazoles and tetrahydrothieno[3,2-b]carbazoles.

Abstract
An efficient, cheap and green protocol for the highly regioselective 1,6-hydroarylation of para -quinone methides ( p -QMs) with indoles at the C-3 position has been established by phosphoric acid catalysis in water under the transition-metal-free reaction conditions. A wide range of indole derivatives and para -quinone methides ( p -QMs) are compatible for the reaction, affording the corresponding 1,6-hydroarylation products with good to excellent yields. The possible mechanism of the reaction has been explored by step-by-step control experiments. The protocol is convenient for practical application, leading a safe, green and feasible way for the formation of C-3 diarylmethyl functionalized indole derivatives.

Abstract
A variety of functionalized triarylmethane and 1,1-diarylalkane derivatives were prepared via a transition-metal-free, one-pot and two-step procedure, involving the reaction of various benzal diacetates with organozinc reagents. A sequential cross-coupling is enabled by changing the solvent from THF to toluene, and a two-step SN 1-type mechanism was proposed and evidenced by experimental studies. The synthetic utility of the method is further demonstrated by the synthesis of several biologically relevant molecules, such as an anti-tuberculosis agent, an anti-breast cancer agent, a precursor of a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator, and a FLAP inhibitor.

Abstract
Highly robust one-pot, four-component cascade cyclization reaction of α-keto aldehydes, anilines, activated alkynes, and aromatic nucleophiles is developed to synthesize a diverse range of pharmaceutically important penta-substituted pyrroles. The reaction proceeds through the cascade cyclization of acylimines (in situ formed) with activated alkynes and aromatic nucleophiles such as indoles, pyrroles, and naphthols at room temperature under calcium(II) catalysis with high yields and broad substrate diversity.

Abstract
A metal-free K2S2O8-HFIP synergistically promoted double Friedel-Crafts alkylation between a glycine derivative and N-substituted aniline was developed to efficiently synthesize diarylmethane derivatives with high para-selectivity. The reaction proceeded smoothly in the absence of any metal and ligand, and exhibited a good tolerance of functional groups.

Abstract
A strategy for the gold(III)-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reaction of indole-3-carboxylic acids with benzylic alcohols has been developed. This cascade reaction is devised as a straightforward and efficient synthetic route for 3-benzylindoles in moderate to excellent yields (50-93%). A Hammett study of the protodecarboxylation gives a negative ρ value, suggesting that there is a buildup of positive charge on the indole ring in the transition state. Furthermore, comparison of initial rates in H2O and in D2O reveals an observed kinetic solvent isotope effect (KSIE = 2.7). This simple protocol, which affords the desired products with CO2 and water as the coproducts, can be achieved under mild conditions without the need for base or other additives in water.

Abstract
The indolocarbazoles are an important class of nitrogen heterocycles which has evolved significantly in recent years, with numerous studies focusing on their diverse biological effects, or targeting new materials with potential applications in organic electronics. This review aims at providing a broad survey of the chemistry and properties of indolocarbazoles from an interdisciplinary point of view, with particular emphasis on practical synthetic aspects, as well as certain topics which have not been previously accounted for in detail, such as the occurrence, formation, biological activities, and metabolism of indolo[3,2- b]carbazoles. The literature of the past decade forms the basis of the text, which is further supplemented with older key references.
