Corannulene-Based Coordination Cage with Helical Bias

Dual-controlled guest release from coordination cages

Despite having significant applications in the construction of controlled delivery systems with high anti-interference capability, to our knowledge dual-controlled molecular release has not yet been achieved based on small molecular/supramolecular entities. Herein, we report a dual-controlled release system based on coordination cages, for which releasing the guest from the cage demands synchronously altering the coordinative metal cations and the solvent. The cages, Hg5L2 and Ag5L2, are constructed via coordination-driven self-assembly of a corannulene-based ligand. While Hg5L2 shows a solvent-independent guest encapsulation in all the studied solvents, Ag5L2 is able to encapsulate the guests in only some of the solvents, such as acetone-d6, but will liberate the encapsulated guests in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane-d2. Hg5L2 and Ag5L2 are interconvertible. Thus, the release of guests from Hg5L2 in acetone-d6 can be achieved, but requires two separate operations, including metal substitutions and a change of the solvent. Dual-controlled systems as such could be useful in complicated molecular release process to avoid those undesired stimulus-responses.

Adaptive Planar Chirality of Pillar[5]arenes Invertible by n-Alkane Lengths

Chirality of host molecules can be induced and/or inverted by the guest molecules. However, the adapting chirality of hosts to the length of n-alkanes remains a great challenge because n-alkanes are neutral, achiral, and linear molecules, resulting in a weak interaction with most compounds. Herein, we report a system with chirality adapted to n-alkane lengths, using a pillar[5]arene-based macrocyclic host, S-Br, which contains five stereogenic carbons and five terminal bromine atoms on each rim. The electron-rich cavity of S-Br could include n-alkanes and the planar-chiral isomers sensitively inverted in response to the lengths of the complexed n-alkanes. The inclusion of a short n-alkane such as n-pentane made S-Br more inclined to be in the pS-form, whereas the inclusion of long n-alkanes such as n-heptane made the pR-form more favorable. The difference in the stability of the isomers was supported by the crystal structures and the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, temperature drives the adaptive chirality of S-Br with n-alkanes. An n-alkane with middle length, n-hexane, showed the dominance of the pR-form of S-Br at a higher temperature, whereas the pS-form was shown at a lower temperature.

Amplification of weak chiral inductions for excellent control over the helical orientation of discrete topologically chiral (M3L2) n polyhedra

Superb control over the helical chirality of discrete (M₃L₂)_n polyhedra (n = 2,4,8, M = Cu^I or Ag^I) created from the self-assembly of propeller-shaped ligands (L) equipped with chiral side chains is demonstrated here. Almost perfect chiral induction (>99 : 1) of the helical orientation of the framework was achieved for the largest (M₃L₂)₈ cube with 48 small chiral side chains (diameter: ∼5 nm), while no or moderate chiral induction was observed for smaller polyhedra (n = 2, 4). Thus, amplification of the weak chiral inductions of each ligand unit is an efficient way to control the chirality of large discrete nanostructures with high structural complexity.

Superb control over the helical chirality of highly-entangled (M₃L₂)_n polyhedra (M = Cu(i), Ag(i); n = 2,4,8) was achieved via multiplication of weak chiral inductions by side chains accumulated on the huge polyhedral surfaces.

Five-Fold Symmetric Pentaindolo- and Pentakis(benzoindolo)Corannulenes: Unique Structural Dynamics Derived from the Combination of Helical and Bowl Inversions

Peripherally π-extended corannulenes bearing quintuple azahelicene units, 10 and 11, were prepared and their dynamic behaviors were studied experimentally and theoretically. The fused corannulenes were synthesized from sym-pentabromocorannulene in three steps. X-Ray diffraction analysis for 10 displayed a conformer possessing a P(M) bowl chirality and a PPMPM (PMPMM) helical chirality, which was found to be the most stable conformer(s). Variable-temperature NMR measurements of 10 and 11 revealed that their structural isomers can be interconvertible in solution, depending on the steric congestion around the helical scaffolds. Automated search for conformers in the equilibrium and transition states by Artificial Force Induced Reaction (AFIR) method revealed their interconversion networks, including bowl-inversion and helical-inversion. This analysis indicated that the co-existing corannulene and azahelicene moieties influence the conformational dynamics, which leads to mitigation of the activation energy barriers for isomerization.

A Distorted Hybrid Corannulene-Dibenzobistetracene

We have designed and synthesized a new type of distorted nanographene by Diels-Alder and Scholl reactions that contains one dibenzobistetracene (DBT, 1) core and two end-capping corannulene units. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate that nanographene 1 contains two [5] helicene subunits with a dihedral angle of 62°, consequently leading to the distorted DBT core. In addition, the photophysical properties and (non)aromaticity of 1 were investigated by the absorption and emission spectra in combination with theoretical calculations.

Graphitic supramolecular architectures based on corannulene, fullerene, and beyond

In this Feature Article, we survey the advances made in the field of fulleretic materials over the last five years. Merging the intriguing characteristics of fulleretic molecules with hierarchical materials can lead to enhanced properties of the latter for applications in optoelectronic, biomaterial, and heterogeneous catalysis sectors. As there has been significant growth in the development of fullerene- and corannulene-containing materials, this article will focus on studies performed during the last five years exclusively, and highlight the recent trends in designing fulleretic compounds and understanding their properties, that has enriched the repertoire of carbon-rich functional materials.

Emerging Spacers-Based Ligands for Supramolecular Coordination Complexes

The design and self-assembly of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) i. e., discrete cyclic metalloarchitectures such as cycles, cages, mesocates, and helicates with desired size, shape, and properties have been increasing exponentially owing to their potential applications in molecular sensors, molecular cargos, molecular recognition, and catalysis. The introduction of the organic motifs and metal complexes as a spacer provides functionality to the metalloarchitecture. This review mainly focusses on newly evolving spacer based ligands employed to yield simple to high-order metallosupramolecular assemblies using straight-forward approaches. The new spacers including corannulene, organic cyclic framework, bicyclic organic motifs, aliphatic chain, metalloligands, triarylboron, BODIPY, azaphosphatrane, phosphine, and thio/selenophosphates offer a great set of properties and in-built functionalities to the metalloarchitectures which are discussed in this review.

Corannulene-based nanographene containing helical motifs

The synthesis and structural analyses of corannulene-PAH hybrids 1 with a [4] helicene subunit and 2 with a [7] helicene subunit have been reported.

Tuning the Properties of Corannulene-Based Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Varying the Fusing Positions of Corannulene

The selective fusions with pyrene derivative to the rim and flank bonds of corannulene generated 4 and 7, respectively, which underwent a Scholl reaction to provide novel distorted PAHs CORA-1 and CORA-2, consisting of corannulene and dibenzocoronene units with different connections between them. The studies revealed that the properties of these PAHs are highly dependent on the fusing positions of corannulene.

An S10-Symmetric 5-Fold Interlocked [2]Catenane

The reaction of sym-pentakis(4-aminothiophenyl)corannulene with 2-formyl-6-methylpyridine and Cu^I or 2-formyl-1,10-phenanthroline and M^II (M = Co, Zn) yields an S₁₀-symmetric 5-fold interlocked [2]catenane of two interpenetrating [Cu^I₅L₂]⁵⁺ cages or D₅-symmetric [M^II₅L₂]¹⁰⁺ cages, respectively. The new structures were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Density functional theory computations point to dispersive energies on par with traditional covalent bond energies. Subcomponent exchange reactions favored formation of the [Co^II₅L₂]¹⁰⁺ cage over the [Cu^I₁₀L₄]¹⁰⁺ catenane. The single cage and catenane each cocrystallized with a corannulene guest to form a bowl-in-bowl substructure.

Phthalocyanine-corannulene conjugates: Synthesis, complexation studies with a pyridyl-functionalized C60 fullerene, and photophysical properties

We report here the synthesis and characterization of some novel Zn(II)phthalocyanine (Pc)-corannulene conjugates and their complexation ability towards a pyridyl-functionalized C[Formula: see text] fullerene through metal-ligand supramolecular interactions. Steady-state and time-resolved photophysical studies carried out on these electron donor–acceptor (D–A) Zn(II)Pc-corannulene/C[Formula: see text] ensembles indicate the formation of photogenerated charge-separated species. Interestingly, a stabilization of the photoinduced charge-separated state is observed in the case of the D–A supramolecular complexes comprising the corannulene-substituted Zn(II)Pcs when compared to their non-corannulene functionalized Zn(II)Pc analogues. We rationalize this stabilizing effect of the charge-separated state exerted by the corannulene as a result of the increased [Formula: see text]-extension and augmented hydrophobicity of the Zn(II)Pc core by the covalently-linked polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fragment.

A twisted macrocyclic hexanuclear palladium complex with internal bulky coordinating ligands

A macrocyclic hexanuclear palladium complex, which accumulates coordination sites on metals inside the cavity, was found to take a uniquely-twisted conformation when six molecules of a bulky pyridine derivative coordinated to the palladium.

Deciphering the helicity switching mechanism: a case study of the rigid three-tiered stacked architecture

Understanding the switching mechanism of helical molecular cages is critical in regulating their functions of asymmetric catalysis and enantioseparation. The helical inversion of a three-tiered stacked architecture was investigated by employing molecular dynamics simulations combined with free-energy calculations. A two-dimensional free-energy landscape characterizing the spinning processes of the top and bottom tiers around the z axis was determined using the extended adaptive biasing force method. The free-energy barrier in the least free-energy pathway was estimated to be 17.6 kcal mol-1, in excellent agreement with experimental measurements. Further analysis revealed that the barrier was caused by geometric deformation, weakening of π-π stacking between aromatic rings, and the re-orientation of polarized amine moieties. The present contribution takes a step toward understanding the dynamic helicity-based functions related to asymmetric reactions and optical resolution.
