Abstract
In the past eight years, the selective cross-coupling of amides by N-C(O) bond activation has emerged as a highly attractive manifold for the manipulation of traditionally unreactive amide bonds. In this Special Issue on Next-Generation Cross-Coupling Chemistry, we report the Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling of amides by selective N-C(O) cleavage catalyzed by bench-stable, well-defined carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) catalysts {[(NHC)Pd(O2CR)2]}. This class of Pd(II)-NHCs promotes cross-coupling under exceedingly mild room-temperature conditions owing to the facile dissociation of the carboxylate ligands to form the active complex. These readily accessible Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts show excellent functional group tolerance and are compatible with a broad range of amide activating groups. Considering the mild conditions for the cross-coupling and the facile access to carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC complexes, we anticipate that this class of bench-stable complexes will find wide application in the activation of amide N-C(O) and related acyl X-C(O) bonds.

Abstract
A novel cyclization/hydrolysis of 1,5-enenitriles for the synthesis of valuable pyrrolidine-2,4-diones in the aqueous phase using I2 as the catalyst and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant is reported. In the presence of the I2/TBHP system, sulfonyl hydrazides produce sulfonyl radicals, which undergo radical addition, intramolecular cyclization, hydrogen abstraction, and hydrolysis to give the final products. The use of the inexpensive and environmentally friendly I2/TBHP catalytic oxidation system in the aqueous phase makes it a benign and sustainable strategy.

Abstract
AbstractCarboxylic acids are an abundant and structurally diverse class of commercially available materials, which are commonly used as stable reagents in organic synthesis. The Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction directly using carboxylic acid as a substrate has been rarely reported. Here, we report an efficient coupling reaction of carboxylic acids with arylboronic acids in toluene in the presence of IPrCl-Cl, Pd(OAc)2, PPh3, and K3PO4·7H2O at 90 °C to give the corresponding aryl ketones.

Abstract
An unprecedented use of benzylsulfonyl hydrazides as benzylating agents has been demonstrated in the direct C-3 benzylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones. A range of benzylsulfonyl hydrazides participated in the C-3 benzylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones with CuCN as the catalyst and DTBP as the oxidant, delivering structurally diverse 3-benzylquinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
The first heterogeneous catalyzed example for the direct synthesis of aromatic ketones via intermolecular carbopalladation of aliphatic nitriles and organoboron compounds was developed. This mild method proceeds with a supported palladium nanoparticles catalyst that could be reused and recycled five times. The fresh and used catalysts were characterized by XPS and TEM. The XPS analysis indicated that Pd0 was the active species for the reaction. This methodology provides a mild and cost-effective strategy for the efficient synthesis of ketones.

Abstract
The first [3 + 2 + 1] methodology for pyridine skeleton synthesis via cascade carbopalladation/cyclization of acetonitrile, arylboronic acids, and aldehydes was developed. This reaction proceeds via six step tandem reaction sequences involving the carbopalladation reaction of acetonitrile, a nucleophilic addition, a condensation, an intramolecular Michael addition, cyclization, and aromatization. Delightfully, both palladium acetate and supported palladium nanoparticles catalyzed this reaction with similar catalytic performance. The characterization results of the fresh and used supported palladium nanoparticle catalysts indicated that the reaction might be performed via a Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic cycle that began with Pd(0). Furthermore, the products showed good fluorescence characteristics. The green homogeneous/heterogenous catalytic methodologies pave a new way for constructing the pyridine skeleton.

Abstract
A green and efficient visible-light induced functionalization of anilines under mild conditions has been reported. Utilizing nontoxic, cost-effective, and water-soluble diacetyl as photosensitizer and acetylating reagent, and water as the solvent, a variety of anilines were converted into the corresponding aryl ketones, iodides, and bromides. With advantages of environmentally friendly conditions, simple operation, broad substrate scope, and functional group tolerance, this reaction represents a valuable method in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The first example of the palladium-catalyzed cascade reaction of o-aminocinnamonitriles with arylhydrazines has been achieved, providing an efficient synthetic pathway to access quinolines with moderate to good yields. Preliminary mechanistic experiments indicate that this cascade process involves sequential denitrogenative addition followed by an intramolecular cyclization. Assembly of 1 H-isoindole derivatives by selective carbon-nitrogen triple bond activation: access to aggregation-induced emission fluorophores for lipid droplet imaging. Chem Sci 2019; 10:7076-7081. Abstract
A method of selectively activating carbon–nitrogen triple bonds has been developed to access 1H-isoindole AIE fluorophores for lipid droplet imaging.
A novel strategy has been established to assemble a series of single (Z)- or (E)-1H-isoindole derivatives through selectively and sequentially activating carbon–nitrogen triple bonds in a multicomponent system containing various nucleophilic and electrophilic sites. The reaction provides efficient access to structurally unique fluorophores with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. These new fluorophores show fluorescence wavelengths and efficiencies that can be modulated and have excellent potential to specifically light up lipid droplets (LDs) in living cells with bright fluorescence, low cytotoxicity and better photostability than commercially available LD-specific dyes.

Abstract
The first example of the palladium-catalyzed tandem addition/cyclization of 2-(benzylidenamino)benzonitriles with arylboronic acids has been developed. This transformation features good functional group tolerance and provides an alternative synthetic pathway to access 2,4-diarylquinazolines in moderate to good yields. A plausible mechanism for the formation of 2,4-diarylquinazolines involving sequential nucleophilic addition followed by an intramolecular cyclization is proposed.

Abstract
The decarboxylative alkynylation of alkynyl carboxylic acids and arylsulfonyl hydrazides by desulfinative coupling could provide aryl alkynes in satisfactory yields by either judiciously selecting palladium catalysts or modulating phosphine ligands under mild conditions.
