Reactions of Cyclopentadienylidenes with CF3I: Electron Bond Donation versus Halogen Bond Donation of the Iodine Atom

Coordination Chemistry of Polynitriles, Part XII—Serendipitous Synthesis of the Octacyanofulvalenediide Dianion and Study of Its Coordination Chemistry with K+ and Ag+

The reaction of diazotetracyanocyclopentadiene with copper powder in the presence of NEt4Cl yields, unexpectedly, besides the known NEt4[C5H(CN)4] (3), the NEt4 salt of octacyanofulvalenediide (NEt4)2[C10(CN)8] (5), which can be transformed via reaction with AgNO3 to the corresponding Ag+ salt (4), which in turn can be reacted with KCl to yield the corresponding K+ salt 6. The molecular and crystal structures of 4–6 could be determined, and show a significantly twisted aromatic dianion which uses all its nitrile groups for coordination to the metals; 4 and 6 form three-dimensional coordination polymers with fourfold coordinated Ag+ and eightfold coordinated K+ cations.

Visible-light-promoted olefinic trifluoromethylation of enamides with CF3SO2Na

A visible-light-promoted olefinic C-H trifluoromethylation of enamides was developed by employing cheap and stable Langlois' reagent as the CF₃ source. A series of β-CF₃ enamides were obtained in moderate to good yields with high E-isomer selectivity under mild conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that molecular oxygen acts as the terminal oxidant for this net oxidative process, and the E isomer selectivity could be well explained by a base-assisted deprotonation of the cation intermediate.

Lewis acid catalyzed heavy atom tunneling - the case of 1H-bicyclo[3.1.0]-hexa-3,5-dien-2-one

For many thermal reactions, the effects of catalysis or the influence of solvents on reaction rates can be rationalized by simple transition state models. This is not the case for reactions controlled by quantum tunneling, which do not proceed via transition states, and therefore lack the simple concept of transition state stabilization. 1H-Bicyclo[3.1.0]-hexa-3,5-dien-2-one is a highly strained cyclopropene that rearranges to 4-oxocyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene via heavy-atom tunneling. H₂O, CF₃I, or BF₃ form Lewis acid–base complexes with both reactant and product, and the influence of these intermolecular complexes on the tunneling rates for this rearrangement was studied. The tunneling rate increases by a factor of 11 for the H₂O complex, by 23 for the CF₃I complex, and is too fast to be measured for the BF₃ complex. These observations agree with quantum chemical calculations predicting a decrease in both barrier height and barrier width upon complexation with Lewis acids, resulting in the observed Lewis acid catalysis of the tunneling rearrangement.

The ring-opening of a highly strained cyclopropene to a carbene proceeds via heavy-atom tunneling. This rearrangement is accelerated in the presence of H₂O, ICF₃ or BF₃, resulting in a novel Lewis-acid catalyzed tunneling reaction.

Halogen bonding interactions in the XC5H4N···YCF3 (X = CH3, H, Cl, CN, NO2; Y = Cl, Br, I) complexes

The noncovalent interactions between the σ-hole region outside the halogen atom and the nitrogen atom of pyridine and its para-substituted derivatives are the focus of this work. Based on the analyses of the electrostatic potentials, YCF₃ (Y = Cl, Br, I) act as halogen bond donors, XC₅H₄N (X = CH₃, H, Cl, CN, NO₂) act as halogen bond acceptors, and the binary halogen-bonded complexes XC₅H₄N···YCF₃ have been designed and investigated by B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVDZ calculations together with the aug-cc-pVDZ-PP basis set for iodine. When the halogen bond acceptor remains unchanged, the interactions between C₅H₅N and YCF₃ (Y = Cl, Br, I) increase with the order of Y = Cl, Br, and I. When the halogen donor ICF₃ is fixed, the halogen bonding interactions decrease along the sequence of X = CH₃, H, Cl, CN, NO₂. Therefore, the halogen bond of the CH₃C₅H₄N···ICF₃ complex is the strongest. The interactions between Lewis acid YCF₃ (Y = Cl, Br, I) and pyridine and para-substituted pyridine are closed-shell and noncovalent interactions. On the one hand, when the halogen bond acceptor XC₅H₄N is fixed, with the increase of halogen atomic number, the strength of halogen bond increases; on the other hand, when the halogen bond donor ICF₃ is fixed, as the electron-withdrawing ability of the electron-withdrawing group (X) increases, the halogen bond gradually weakens.

Photochemical Dehalogenation of Aryl Halides: Importance of Halogen Bonding

Upon UVA irradiation, aryl halides can undergo dehalogenation in the presence of bases and methanol as a hydrogen donor. This catalyst-free photochemical dehalogenation is furnished through a facile radical chain reaction under mild conditions. The chain reaction follows UVA irradiation of the reaction mixture in a transition-metal-free environment. Mechanistic studies support a chain mechanism in which initiation involves absorption by a methoxide-bromoarene complex facilitated by halogen-bonding interactions. The methoxide-bromine interaction leads to a weakened Br-C bond that is prone to facile cleavage during the initiation and propagation steps.

What Is the Nature of Supramolecular Bonding? Comprehensive NBO/NRT Picture of Halogen and Pnicogen Bonding in RPH2···IF/FI Complexes (R = CH3, OH, CF3, CN, NO2)

We employ a variety of natural bond orbital (NBO) and natural resonance theory (NRT) tools to comprehensively investigate the nature of halogen and pnicogen bonding interactions in RPH₂···IF/FI binary complexes (R = CH₃, OH, CF₃, CN, and NO₂) and the tuning effects of R-substituents. Though such interactions are commonly attributed to “sigma-hole”-type electrostatic effects, we show that they exhibit profound similarities and analogies to the resonance-type 3-center, 4-electron (3c/4e) donor-acceptor interactions of hydrogen bonding, where classical-type “electrostatics” are known to play only a secondary modulating role. The general 3c/4e resonance perspective corresponds to a continuous range of interatomic A···B bond orders (b_AB), spanning both the stronger “covalent” interactions of the molecular domain (say, b_AB ≥ ½) and the weaker interactions (b_AB ˂ ½, often misleadingly termed “noncovalent”) that underlie supramolecular complexation phenomena. We show how a unified NBO/NRT-based description of hydrogen, halogen, pnicogen, and related bonding yields an improved predictive utility and intuitive understanding of empirical trends in binding energies, structural geometry, and other measurable properties that are expected to be manifested in all such supramolecular interaction phenomena.

Reactions of Arylcarbenes with Lewis Acids

The reactions of the three triplet ground state arylcarbenes diphenylcarbene 1, fluorenylidene 2, and dibenzocycloheptadienylidene 3 with the Lewis acids H₂ O, ICF₃ , and BF₃ were studied under the conditions of matrix isolation. H₂ O was selected as typical hydrogen bond donor, ICF₃ as halogen bond donor, and BF₃ as strong Lewis acid. H₂ O forms hydrogen-bonded complexes of the singlet carbenes with 1 and 2, but not with 3. This is rationalized by the larger singlet-triplet gap of 3, which does not allow to stabilize the singlet state below the triplet state by hydrogen bonding. With ICF₃ , both 1 and 3 form halogen-bonded complexes of the singlet states of the carbenes. This indicates that halogen bonding stabilizes singlet carbenes more than hydrogen bonding. Carbene 2 reacts differently from 1 and 3 by forming an iodonium ylide, thus avoiding antiaromatic destabilization of the fluorenyl unit. With BF₃ , all three carbenes form zwitterionic Lewis acid/base complexes.
