Aerobic and Ligand-Free Manganese-Catalyzed Homocoupling of Arenes or Aryl Halides via in Situ Formation of Aryllithiums

Rhodium-catalyzed homo-coupling reaction of aryl Grignard reagents and its application for the synthesis of an integrin inhibitor

A novel Rh-catalyzed one-pot homo-coupling reaction of aryl Grignard reagents was achieved. The reaction with bromobenzenes having an electron-donating group or a halogen substituent gave the corresponding homo-coupling products in good yields, although the reaction using heterocyclic or aliphatic bromides scarcely proceeded. A Rh(III)-bis(aryl) complex, which might be formed from RhCl(PPh3)3 and the aryl Grignard reagents, plays an important role in giving the homo-coupling products in this reaction. Furthermore, we applied the reaction to the synthesis of a novel inhibitor for integrins which is critical for several diseases.

1-Substituted Perylene Derivatives by Anionic Cyclodehydrogenation: Analysis of the Reaction Mechanism

Perylene derivatives constitute a promising class of compounds with technological applications mainly due to their optoelectronic properties. One mechanism proposed to synthesize them, starting from binaphthyl derivatives, is anionic cyclodehydrogenation (under reductive conditions). However, the scope of this reaction is limited. In the present study, we report a theoretical and experimental analysis of this particular reaction mechanism for its use in the synthesis of 1-substituted perylenes. Different substituents at position 2 of 1,1'-binaphthalene were evaluated: -OCH₃, -OSi(CH₃)₂C(CH₃)₃, and -N(CH₃)₂. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the proposed mechanism, we suggest that the cyclization takes place from binaphthyl dianion instead of its radical anion. This dianion has an open-shell diradical nature, and this could be the species that was detected by EPR in previous studies. The O-substituted derivatives could not afford the perylene derivatives since their radical anions fragment and the necessary binaphthyl dianion could not be formed. On the other hand, 49% of N,N-dimethylperylen-1-amine was obtained starting from the N-substituted 2-binapthyl derivative as a substrate, employing a simpler experimental methodology.

Visible Light-Driven, Gold(I)-Catalyzed Preparation of Symmetrical (Hetero)biaryls by Homocoupling of Arylazo Sulfones

The preparation of symmetrical (hetero)biaryls via arylazo sulfones has been successfully carried out upon visible light irradiation in the presence of PPh₃AuCl as the catalyst. The present protocol led to the efficient synthesis of a wide range of target compounds in an organic-aqueous solvent under photocatalyst-free conditions.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of 2,2′-Bipyridines and Their Derivatives

The sustained interest in the synthesis of new analogues of 2,2′-bipyridines is supported by the importance of compounds featuring bipyridine core in diverse areas of chemical, biomedical and materials research, which is relayed into the development of new approaches and the expansion of existing synthetic methods. This short review covers advances in the synthesis of 2,2′-bipyridines, including both the synthesis of compounds with a given substitution pattern and the development of new methods for assembling the bipyridine core. Special attention is directed toward the use of pyridine N-oxides and metal-free protocols to facilitate the formation of bipyridines. This short review focuses primarily on reports published in the last 5–6 years.

1,1'-Biisoquinolines-Neglected Ligands in the Heterocyclic Diimine Family That Provoke Stereochemical Reflections

1,1′-Biisoquinolines are a class of bidentate nitrogen donor ligands in the heterocyclic diimine family. This review briefly discusses their properties and the key synthetic pathways available and then concentrates upon their coordination behaviour. The ligands are of interest as they exhibit the phenomenon of atropisomerism (hindered rotation about the C1–C1′ bond). A notation for depicting the stereochemistry in coordination compounds containing multiple stereogenic centers is developed. The consequences of the chirality within the ligand on the coordination behaviour is discussed in detail.

Tandem Mn-I Exchange and Homocoupling Processes Mediated by a Synergistically Operative Lithium Manganate

Pairing lithium and manganese(II) to form lithium manganate [Li₂ Mn(CH₂ SiMe₃ )₄ ] enables the efficient direct Mn-I exchange of aryliodides, affording transient (aryl)lithium manganate intermediates which in turn undergo spontaneous C-C homocoupling at room temperature to furnish symmetrical (bis)aryls in good yields under mild reaction conditions. The combination of EPR with X-ray crystallographic studies has revealed the mixed Li/Mn constitution of the organometallic intermediates involved in these reactions, including the homocoupling step which had previously been thought to occur via a single-metal Mn aryl species. These studies show Li and Mn working together in a synergistic manner to facilitate both the Mn-I exchange and the C-C bond-forming steps. Both steps are carefully synchronized, with the concomitant generation of the alkyliodide ICH₂ SiMe₃ during the Mn-I exchange being essential to the aryl homocoupling process, wherein it serves as an in situ generated oxidant.

(E)-Di-iodination of Alkynes Using Dried Dowex H+/NaI Approach

We investigated the usefulness of the dried Dowex H⁺/NaI approach for the selective di-iodination of alkynes. The Dowex H⁺/NaI approach selectively produces only (E)-di-iodinated products; it is very straightforward and nontoxic. The utilization of 2-propanol as a solvent in the reactions can be considered as a "green" approach and the method maybe extended to radio-iodination. The method allows access to highly important building blocks. An initial example of the di-iodination and esterification in the same one-pot reaction is also presented.
