Synthesis of Solution-Processable Donor-Acceptor Pyranone Dyads for White Organic Light-Emitting Devices

Facile construction of 2-pyrones under carbene catalysis

2-Pyrones are valuable structural motifs in organic chemistry, found in numerous natural products and pharmaceuticals. The synthesis of these heterocycles has been significantly advanced by the application of N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) catalysis. This review examines the recent advancements in NHC-catalyzed synthesis of 2-pyrones, highlighting key methodologies, mechanisms, and synthetic applications. NHC catalysis has revolutionized the synthesis of 2-pyrones, providing efficient, selective, and versatile methods for constructing these valuable heterocycles.

A new class of teraryl-based AIEgen for highly selective imaging of intracellular lipid droplets and its detection in advanced-stage human cervical cancer tissues

Lipid droplets (LDs) have drawn much attention in recent years. They serve as the energy reservoir of cells and also play an important role in numerous physiological processes. Furthermore, LDs are found to be associated with several pathological conditions, including cancer and diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a new class of teraryl-based donor-acceptor-appended aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), 6a, for selective staining of intracellular LDs in in vitro live 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and the HeLa cancer cell line. In addition, AIEgen 6a was found to be capable of staining and quantifying the LD accumulation in the tissue sections of advanced-stage human cervical cancer patients. Unlike commercial LD staining dyes Nile Red, BODIPY and LipidTOX, AIEgen 6a showed a high Stokes shift (195 nm), a good fluorescence lifetime decay of 12.7 ns, and LD staining persisting for nearly two weeks.

NaCl Micro-Crystal as a Molecular Mold for Enhanced Synthesis of Planar Phenazines and Their Applications on Chemosensing and a Full-Color Fluorescent Material

NaCl has been successfully used as a template for the synthesis of 2D nanomaterials, but it is seldom used for the construction of flat small organic molecules. Herein, a simple, low-cost, and highly efficient synthesis of phenazines with planar main frames, such as 5-phenyl-5,14-dihydro-5,7,12,14-tetraazapentacene, in the presence of NaCl micro-crystal as a kind of molecular mold is described. The reactants were mixed with NaCl powder and heated to 320 °C for 5 min. Yields >90% were readily achieved after a simple precipitation in water. The effectiveness of NaCl crystal as a mold with HCl was confirmed by comparison with common inorganic salts, SiO₂, and γ-Al₂O₃ with HCl together with combinations including NaNO₃ + HNO₃, Na₂SO₄ + H₂SO₄, NaH₂PO₄ + H₃PO₄, and NaH₂PO₄ + polyphosphoric acid. The mechanism was deduced with the aid of computer simulation, which confirms the stabilization of 5,14-dihydro-5,7,12,14-tetraazapentacene by the NaCl surface. DMSO solution of a product, 1,3-dihydro-imidazo[4,5-b]phenazin-2-one, showed enhanced fluorescence in H₂O, and it was used as a fluorescent probe for pH and Hg²⁺. A full-color material was prepared by mixing precursors of epoxy resin and phenazines, and its fluorescent color could be adjusted by the ratio of phenazines.

New white light-emitting halochromic stilbenes with remarkable quantum yields and aggregation-induced emission

Highly efficient single-component white light emitters (SWLEs), are attractive candidates for the simple and cost-effective fabrication of high-performance lighting devices. This study introduced a donor-π-acceptor and a donor-π-donor stilbene-based chromophores, representing pH-responsive fluorescence. The emitters showed yellow and green fluorescence in their neutral form. At the same time, protonation of the chromophores caused blue fluorescence color with a strong hypsochromic shift. The white light emission (WLE) for these chromophores was observed at approximately pH  3 due to the simultaneous presence of the neutral and protonated forms of the chromophores, covering almost all the emission spectra in the visible region (400-700 nm). These chromophores presented exceptional white light quantum yields (Φ) between 31 and 54%, which was desirable for producing white light-emitting devices. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT were applied to study the structural and electronic properties of the chromophores.

Triphenylamine/4,4'-Dimethoxytriphenylamine-Functionalized Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene Fluorophores with a High Quantum Efficiency: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

A wide series of 10 new triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-functionalized thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) fluorophores, 4a-e and 5a-e, bearing different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents (-PhCN, -PhF, -PhOMe, -Ph, and -C₆H₁₃) at the terminal thienothiophene units were designed and synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated by experimental and computational studies. Solid-state fluorescent quantum yields were recorded to be from 20 to 69%, and the maximum solution-state quantum efficiency reached 97%. Moreover, the photophysical characterization of the novel chromophores demonstrated a significant Stokes shift, reaching 179 nm with a bathochromic shift. They exhibited tuning color emission from orange to dark blue in solution and showed fluorescence lifetime reaching 4.70 ns. The relationship between triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-derived triarylamines and different functional groups on thieno[3,2-b] thiophene units was discussed.

A novel donor-π-acceptor halochromic 2,6-distyrylnaphthalene chromophore: synthesis, photophysical properties and DFT studies

In this study a new 2,6-distyryl naphthalene [2-((4-((E)-2-(6-((E)-2,4-bis(methylsulfonyl)styryl)naphthalen-2-yl)vinyl)phenyl)(ethyl)amino)ethan-1-ol; ASDSN] was synthesized successfully using Heck chemistry as the main reaction. The ASDSN compound is a donor-pi-acceptor (D-π-A) conjugated system with amino as electron donating and sulfonyl as electron withdrawing groups. The UV-vis absorption of ASDSN was observed in the range of 403-417 nm with high molar extinction coefficients (ε = 15 300-56 200 M-1 cm-1) in some different solvents. This new fluorescent 2,6-distyryl naphthalene compound emits in the yellow region of the visible spectrum (557 nm) with Stokes shifts of 5930 cm-1. ASDSN is a pH-responsive fluorescence compound that shows yellow fluorescence in neutral form and blue fluorescence in the protonated form. A white light emission (WLE) for the chromophore was observed at pH = 3.0. The ASDSN chromophore presented a satisfactory white light quantum yield (Φ) of 13% which was desirable for producing white light emitting devices. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT were applied to study structural and electronic properties of the chromophore.
