π-Conjugated Nanohoops: A New Generation of Curved Materials for Organic Electronics

Nanohoops, cyclic association of π-conjugated systems to form a hoop-shaped molecule, have been widely developed in the last 15 years. Beyond the synthetic challenge, the strong interest towards these molecules arises from their radially oriented π-orbitals, which provide singular properties to these fascinating structures. Thanks to their particular cylindrical arrangement, this new generation of curved molecules have been already used in many applications such as host-guest complexation, biosensing, bioimaging, solid-state emission and catalysis. However, their potential in organic electronics has only started to be explored. From the first incorporation as an emitter in a fluorescent organic light emitting diode (OLED), to the recent first incorporation as a host in phosphorescent OLEDs or as charge transporter in organic field-effect transistors and in organic photovoltaics, this field has shown important breakthroughs in recent years. These findings have revealed that curved materials can play a key role in the future and can even be more efficient than their linear counterparts. This can have important repercussions for the future of electronics. Time has now come to overview the different nanohoops used to date in electronic devices in order to stimulate the future molecular designs of functional materials based on these macrocycles.

Porous Organic Nanotubes: Chemistry of One-Dimensional Space

ConspectusOne-dimensional organic nanotubes feature unique properties, such as confined chemical environments and transport channels, which are highly desirable for many applications. Advances in synthetic methods have enabled the creation of different types of organic nanotubes, including supramolecular, hydrogen-bonded, and carbon nanotube analogues. However, challenges associated with chemical and mechanical stability along with difficulties in controlling aspect ratios remain a significant bottleneck. The fascination with structured porous materials has paved the way for the emergence of reticular solids such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and organic cages. Reticular materials with tubular morphology promise architectural stability with the additional benefit of permeant porosity. Despite this, the current synthetic approaches to these reticular nanotubes focus more on structural design resulting in less reliable morphological uniformity. This Account, highlights the design motivation behind various classes of organic nanotubes, emphasizing their porous interior space. We explore the strategic assembly of organic nanotubes based on their bonding characteristics, from weak supramolecular to robust covalent interactions. Special attention is given to reticular nanotubes, which have gained prominence over the past two decades due to their distinctive micro and mesoporous structures. We examine the synergy of covalent and noncovalent interactions in constructing assembly of these nanotube structures.This Account furnishes a comprehensive overview of our efforts and advancements in developing porous covalent organic nanotubes (CONTs). We describe a general synthetic approach for creating robust imine-linked nanotubes based on the reticular chemistry principles. The use of spatially oriented tetratopic triptycene-based amine and linear ditopic aldehyde building blocks facilitates one-dimensional nanotube growth. The interplay between directional covalent bonds and solvophobic interactions is crucial for forming uniform, well-defined, and high aspect ratio nanotubes. The nanotubes derive their permeant porosity and thermal and chemical stability from their covalent architecture. We also highlight the adaptability of our synthetic methodology to guide the transformation of one-dimensional nanotubes to toroidal superstructures and two-dimensional thin fabrics. Such morphological transformation can be directed by tuning the reaction time or incorporating additional intermolecular interactions to control the intertwining behavior of individual nanotubes. The cohesion of covalent and noncovalent interactions in the tubular nanostructures manifests superior viscoelastic mechanical properties in the assembled CONT fabrics. We establish a strong correlation between structural framework design and nanostructures by translating reticular synthesis to morphological space and gaining insights into the assembly processes. We anticipate that the present Account will lay the foundation for exploring new designs and chemistry of organic nanotubes for many application platforms.

Leveraging Halogen Interactions for a Supramolecular Nanotube

We demonstrate the formation of supramolecular nanotubes from molecular triangles in a single crystal by balancing the hydrogen bonds and halogen interactions between individual macrocycles. Thereby, we template the supramolecular nanotube growth by intermolecular interactions encoded directly in the macrocycles instead of those provided by the crystallization solvent. Ultimately, we show that replacing bromines for iodines in the macrocycle is necessary to achieve this supramolecular organization by enhancing the strength of the halogen interactions and concomitant reduction of the detrimental hydrogen bonds. We investigated the nature and the interplay of the individual intermolecular interactions by analysis of the experimental single crystal data and quantum chemical calculations. This work enriches the available toolbox of supramolecular interactions and will aid and abet the development of rationally-designed materials with a long-range 1D tubular organization.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

Synthesis and Isolation of a Homochiral Nanohoop Composed of a Tröger's Base and Hexaparaphenylene

The synthesis of a new nanohoop containing a stereogenic Tröger's base skeleton tethered to a curved hexaparaphenylene ([6]CPP) is reported. The TB[6]CPP nanohoop possesses a stable C2 symmetrical structure, which promotes the allowed transition that gives rise to pale blue emission with a quantum yield of ~0.69, surpassing the value of the more symmetrical [8]CPP. Moreover, TB[6]CPP shows chiroptical properties including circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence with a moderate dissymmetry factor (|glum|) of ~2.1×10-3.

Half-substituted fluorocycloparaphenylenes with high symmetry: synthesis, properties and derivatization to densely substituted carbon nanorings

Fluorinated cycloparaphenylenes (FCPPs) have attracted attention as electron-accepting CPPs as well as strained fluoroarenes. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of novel FCPPs; F16[8]CPP and F12[6]CPP. Furthermore, the derivatization of F16[8]CPP afforded a new carbon nanoring where sixteen pyrrole rings are densely substituted on the CPP framework.

Synthesis and metalation of polycatechol nanohoops derived from fluorocycloparaphenylenes

Due to their unique topology and distinct physical properties, cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) are attractive building blocks for new materials synthesis. While both noncovalent interactions and irreversible covalent bonds have been used to link CPP monomers into extended materials, a coordination chemistry approach remains less explored. Here we show that nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions can be leveraged to rapidly introduce donor groups (-OR, -SR) onto polyfluorinated CPP rings. Demethylation of methoxide-substituted CPPs produces polycatechol nanohoop ligands that are readily metalated to produce well-defined, multimetallic CPP complexes. As catechols are recurring motifs throughout coordination chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry, the polycatechol nanohoops reported here open the door to new strategies for the bottom-up synthesis of atomically precise CPP-based materials.

Two Rings Around One Ball: Stability and Charge Localization of [1 : 1] and [2 : 1] Complex Ions of [10]CPP and C60/70 [ *]

We investigate the gas-phase chemistry of noncovalent complexes of [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) with C₆₀ and C₇₀ by means of atmospheric pressure photoionization and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The literature-known [1 : 1] complexes, namely [10]CPP⊃C₆₀ and [10]CPP⊃C₇₀ , are observed as radical cations and anions. Their stability and charge distribution are studied using energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID). These measurements reveal that complexes with a C₇₀ core exhibit a greater stability and, on the other hand, that the radical cations are more stable than the respective radical anions. Regarding the charge distribution, in anionic complexes charges are exclusively located on C₆₀ or C₇₀ , while the charges reside on [10]CPP in the case of cationic complexes. [2 : 1] complexes of the ([10]CPP₂ ⊃C_60/70 )⁺ ⋅^/- ⋅ type are observed for the first time as isolated solitary gas-phase species. Here, C₆₀ -based [2 : 1] complexes are less stable than the respective C₇₀ analogues. By virtue of the high stability of cationic [1 : 1] complexes, [2 : 1] complexes show a strongly reduced stability of the radical cations. DFT analyses of the minimum geometries as well as molecular dynamics calculations support the experimental data. Furthermore, our novel gas-phase [2 : 1] complexes are also found in 1,2-dichlorobenzene. Insights into the thermodynamic parameters of the binding process as well as the species distribution are derived from isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements.

Perfluorocycloparaphenylenes

Perfluorinated aromatic compounds, the so-called perfluoroarenes, are widely used in materials science owing to their high electron affinity and characteristic intermolecular interactions. However, methods to synthesize highly strained perfluoroarenes are limited, which greatly limits their structural diversity. Herein, we report the synthesis and isolation of perfluorocycloparaphenylenes (PFCPPs) as a class of ring-shaped perfluoroarenes. Using macrocyclic nickel complexes, we succeeded in synthesizing PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) in one-pot without noble metals. The molecular structures of PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14) were determined by X-ray crystallography to confirm their tubular alignment. Photophysical and electrochemical measurements revealed that PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14) exhibited wide HOMO–LUMO gaps, high reduction potentials, and strong phosphorescence at low temperature. PFCPPs are not only useful as electron-accepting organic materials but can also be used for accelerating the creation of topologically unique molecular nanocarbon materials.

Synthetic methods for the preparation of perfluorinated aromatic compounds are desirable in materials science. Here, the authors synthesize perfluorocycloparaphenylenes, fully fluorinated carbon nanorings, through a nickel-mediated one-pot method.

A Modular Synthesis of Substituted Cycloparaphenylenes

Herein, we report a modular synthesis providing access to substituted cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) of different sizes. A key synthon introducing two geminal ester units was efficiently prepared by [2+2+2] cycloaddition. This building block can be conveniently converted to macrocyclic precursors controlling the ring size of the final CPP. Efficient reductive aromatization through single‐electron transfer provided the substituted nanohoops in a straightforward manner. The tBu ester substitution pattern enables a tube‐like arrangement in the solid‐state governed by van der Waals interactions that exhibits one of the tightest packings of CPPs in tube direction, thus opening new avenues in the crystal design of CPPs.

Modular synthesis, racemization pathway, and photophysical properties of asymmetrically substituted cycloparaphenylenes

Cycloparaphenylene Double Nanohoop: Structure, Lamellar Packing, and Encapsulation of C60 in the Solid State

A new member of the cycloparaphenylene double-nanohoop family was synthesized. Its π-framework features two oval cavities that display different shapes depending on the crystallization conditions. Incorporation of the peropyrene bridge within the nanoring cycles via bay-regions alleviates steric effects and thus allows 1:1 complexation with C₆₀ in the solid state. This nanocarbon adopts a lamellar packing motif, and our results suggest that the structural adjustment of this double nanohoop could enable its use in supramolecular and semiconductive materials.

Confined Spaces in [n]Cyclo-2,7-pyrenylenes

A set of strained aromatic macrocycles based on [n]cyclo-2,7-(4,5,9,10-tetrahydro)pyrenylenes is presented with size-dependent photophysical properties. The K-region of pyrene was functionalized with ethylene glycol groups to decorate the outer rim and thereby confine the space inside the macrocycle. This confined space is especially pronounced for n=5, which leads to an internal binding of up to 8.0×104  m-1 between the ether-decorated [5]cyclo-2,7-pyrenylene and shape-complementary crown ether-cation complexes. Both the ether-decorated [n]cyclo-pyrenylenes as well as one of their host-guest complexes have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In combination with computational methods the structural and thermodynamic reasons for the exceptionally strong binding have been elucidated. The presented rim confinement strategy makes cycloparaphenylenes an attractive supramolecular host family with a favorable, size-independent read-out signature and binding capabilities extending beyond fullerene guests.

Perfect and Defective 13C-Furan-Derived Nanothreads from Modest-Pressure Synthesis Analyzed by 13C NMR

The molecular structure of nanothreads produced by the slow compression of 13C4-furan was studied by advanced solid-state NMR. Spectral editing showed that >95% of carbon atoms were bonded to one hydrogen (C-H) and that there were 2-4% CH2, 0.6% C═O, and <0.3% CH3 groups. Alkenes accounted for 18% of the CH moieties, while trapped, unreacted furan made up 7%. Two-dimensional (2D) 13C-13C and 1H-13C NMR identified 12% of all carbon in asymmetric O-CH═CH-CH-CH- and 24% in symmetric O-CH-CH═CH-CH- rings. While the former represented defects or chain ends, some of the latter appeared to form repeating thread segments. Around 10% of carbon atoms were found in highly ordered, fully saturated nanothread segments. Unusually slow 13C spin-exchange with sites outside the perfect thread segments documented a length of at least 14 bonds; the small width of the perfect-thread signals also implied a fairly long, regular structure. Carbons in the perfect threads underwent relatively slow spin-lattice relaxation, indicating slow spin exchange with other threads and smaller amplitude motions. Through partial inversion recovery, the signals of the perfect threads were observed and analyzed selectively. Previously considered syn-threads with four different C-H bond orientations were ruled out by centerband-only detection of exchange NMR, which was, on the contrary, consistent with anti-threads. The observed 13C chemical shifts were matched well by quantum-chemical calculations for anti-threads but not for more complex structures like syn/anti-threads. These observations represent the first direct determination of the atomic-level structure of fully saturated nanothreads.

Synthesis and stereoisomerism of [n]cyclo-2,9-phenanthrenylene congeners possessing alternating E/Z- and R/S-biaryl linkages

The synthesis and cyclostereoisomerism of [n]cyclo-2,9-phenanthrenylenes ([n]CPhen2,9, n = 4, 6 and 8), possessing hybrid E/Z- and R/S-biaryl linkages, were elaborated. The dimer of a phenanthrene derivative was used as a starting material and underwent Ni-mediated Yamamoto-type coupling to afford [6]CPhen2,9 as a major cyclic product, as well as [4]CPhen2,9 and [8]CPhen2,9 as minor products. The stereoisomers of [n]CPhen2,9 were isolated and characterized, and the number of stereoisomers indicated that E/Z linkages did not provide any experimentally separable isomers, whereas the chirality in [n]CPhen2,9 originated from the intrinsic axial chirality at constrained R/S linkages. Theoretical calculations predicted that the 2,2'-linkages in [n]CPhen2,9 adopted a fixed Z- or E-configuration, which suggested a novel type of dynamics of atropisomerism in contrast to the reported rigid or flexible behavior. This study enriches our understanding of the stereochemical features of E/Z linkages in aromatic macrocycles.

Scalable Synthesis of Crystalline One-Dimensional Carbon Nanothreads through Modest-Pressure Polymerization of Furan

Carbon nanothreads, which are one-dimensional sp³-rich polymers, combine high tensile strength with flexibility owing to subnanometer widths and diamond-like cores. These extended carbon solids are constructed through pressure-induced polymerization of sp² molecules such as benzene. Whereas a few examples of carbon nanothreads have been reported, the need for high onset pressures (≥17 GPa) to synthesize them precludes scalability and limits scope. Herein, we report the scalable synthesis of carbon nanothreads based on molecular furan, which can be achieved through ambient temperature pressure-induced polymerization with an onset reaction pressure of only 10 GPa due to its lessened aromaticity relative to other molecular precursors. When slowly compressed to 15 GPa and gradually decompressed to 1.5 GPa, a sharp 6-fold diffraction pattern is observed in situ, indicating a well-ordered crystalline material formed from liquid furan. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the reaction product exhibits three distinct d-spacings from 4.75 to 4.9 Å, whose size, angular spacing, and degree of anisotropy are consistent with our atomistic simulations for crystals of furan nanothreads. Further evidence for polymerization was obtained by powder XRD, Raman/IR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Comparison of the IR spectra with computed vibrational modes provides provisional identification of spectral features characteristic of specific nanothread structures, namely syn, anti, and syn/anti configurations. Mass spectrometry suggests that molecular weights of at least 6 kDa are possible. Furan therefore presents a strategic entry toward scalable carbon nanothreads.

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of m-Phenylene-Embedded Cycloparaphenylene Nanorings

Five m-phenylene-embedded cycloparaphenylenes m₃[9]CPP 1-5 were synthesized by the platinum-mediated cyclooligomerization strategy with high overall yields. The structures of m₃[9]CPP 1-3 were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Compared to [9]CPP, m₃[9]CPP 1 caused a significant blueshift in the UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. This result shows that the radial π-conjugation is distorted and partially interrupted. The photophysical properties of m₃[9]CPP 1 were further tuned by the introduction of various substituents for m₃[9]CPP 2-5. Methoxy group substitution at m-phenylene did not change the photophysical properties significantly. Replacement of m-phenylene by tetrafluoro-m-phenylene achieved a significant blueshift. When the carboxyl group was embedded at m-phenylene or the methoxy group was embedded at p-phenylene, significant redshifts were observed with blue color emission. Theoretical calculations revealed that the decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap in m₃[9]CPP 4 and 5 is favorable for the redshift of the fluorescence spectrum.
