Abstract
Extensive research has been conducted on the spectral properties of chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, owing to their potential applications in sensing, optoelectronic devices, and drug discovery. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the fluorosolvatochromism of selected chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, with a particular emphasis on the impact of methoxy substitution. Three derivatives were synthesized and subjected to spectral analysis: chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxylate (I) as the parent compound, and its 7-methoxy (II) and 8-methoxy (III) substituted derivatives. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of all derivatives exhibited a broad band with a maximum absorption wavelength that remained unaffected by the surrounding medium. However, distinct fluorescence properties were observed among them. Specifically, derivative II displayed notable fluorescence, while derivatives I and III exhibited no fluorescence properties. Furthermore, derivative II exhibited a fluorescence spectrum that is significantly influenced by the polarity of the medium. To investigate the fluorosolvatochromic behavior in depth, we conducted a comprehensive analysis using various neat solvents with different polarities and hydrogen bonding capabilities. The results obtained revealed a significant positive fluorosolvatochromism, with a bathochromic shift in the fluorescence spectrum as the solvent polarity increased. To understand how specific and non-specific interactions between the solute and the solvent affected the fluorosolvatochromism of II, we employed the four empirical scales model of Catalán. The obtained results demonstrated that intramolecular charge transfer played a crucial role in the fluorescence behavior of II. To provide a molecular-level explanation for the experimental spectral properties, we utilized the DFT and TD-DFT/B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) computational methods with the IEFPCM implicit solvation approach. The spectral differences between II and III were rationalized in terms of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs: the HOMO and LUMO), where distinct natures were observed among the examined derivatives. This study offers valuable insights into the impact of methoxy substitution on the physical and chemical properties of chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine derivatives, specifically concerning their spectral properties as elucidated by their fluorosolvatochromic behavior.

Abstract
Quadrupolar bis-coumarins bearing dialkylamino groups, prepared by a double Pechmann reaction and subsequent oxidation, strongly emit yellow-orange light. Comparison with non-substituted analogs reveals that, the photophysical properties of the conjugated bis-coumarins are controlled both by the dialkylamino substituents and by the π-system. Analogous but non-conjugated bis-coumarins emit blue light both in solution and in crystalline state. Unusually fast oxidation process in the crystalline state is responsible for the presence of two bands in their solid-state emission. Two-center, charge-transfer transition from an orbital delocalized on the entire molecule to the central benzene ring is responsible for photophysical properties.

Abstract
A Pd-catalyzed alkyne and aryne annulation strategy via C-H activation has been implemented for the synthesis of π-extended coumarins. This synthetic strategy provides a wide range of π-extended coumarins in moderate to good yields with good functional group compatibility. Photophysical properties of the synthesized π-extended coumarins have been evaluated, and some of them show interesting fluorescent properties. Three of the synthesized coumarins have been unambiguously established by a single-crystal XRD study.

Abstract
Janus-type triskelion-shaped fluorophores comprising coumarins bearing various electron-donating substituents (1aad, 1add, 1ccd, and 1cdd) were successfully synthesized via an intramolecular Ullmann coupling. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that all the compounds presented two different molecular surfaces, similar to Janus-type molecules. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of asymmetrical derivatives 1aad, 1add, 1ccd, and 1cdd exhibited a bathochromic shift due to their narrow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) –lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap. Natural transition orbital (NTO) analysis indicated that the excited state orbital overlaps differ among the C3 symmetrical and asymmetrical dyes. These triskelion-shaped fluorophores were found to form molecular nanoaggregates in THF/H2O mixtures and demonstrated aggregation-induced emission (AIE) enhancement characteristics as a result of restricting their molecular inversion. These results indicate that Janus-type AIE fluorophores are potentially applicable as solid-state fluorescent chiral materials, which can be optimized by controlling their molecular rearrangement in the solid state.

Abstract
Reported herein is an electrophile-modulated aromatization reaction of highly functionalized cyclopropanes to structurally diverse benzoisocoumarins featuring concurrent formation of the benzenoid and α-pyrone rings under mild conditions. An aromatization reaction of the proposed benzonorcaradiene intermediates prepared independently revealed a crucial role of the neighboring olefinic substituents in determining whether the cyclopropane ring expansion is followed by a 1,2-shift of the ester group.

Abstract
![]()
Eleven conjoined
coumarins possessing a chromeno[3,4-c]chromene-6,7-dione
skeleton have been synthesized via the reaction
of electron-rich phenols with esters of coumarin-3-carboxylic acids,
catalyzed by either Lewis acids or 4-dimethylaminopyridine. Furthermore,
Michael-type addition to angular benzo[f]coumarins
is possible, leading to conjugated helical systems. Arrangement of
the electron-donating amino groups at diverse positions on this heterocyclic
skeleton makes it possible to obtain π-expanded coumarins with
emission either sensitive to, or entirely independent of, solvent
polarity with large Stokes shifts. Computational studies have provided
a rationale for moderate solvatochromic effects unveiling the lack
of collinearity of the dipole moments in the ground and excited states.
Depending on the functional groups present, the obtained dyes are
highly polarized with dipole moments of ∼14 D in the ground
state and ∼20–25 D in the excited state. Strong emission
in nonpolar solvents, in spite of the inclusion of a NO2 group, is rationalized by the fact that the intramolecular charge
transfer introduced into these molecules is strong enough to suppress
intersystem crossing yet weak enough to prevent the formation of dark
twisted intramolecular charge transfer states. Photochemical transformation
of the dye possessing a chromeno[3,4-c]pyridine-4,5-dione
scaffold led to the formation of a spirocyclic benzo[g]coumarin.

Abstract
Herein, we report a green and efficient synthetic route for the construction of diverse functionalized coumarins in good-to-excellent yields (60-98%) via the Pechmann condensation. The optimized synthetic route involves a biodegradable, reusable, and inexpensive deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride and l-(+)-tartaric acid in a ratio of 1:2 at 110 °C. Interestingly, phloroglucinol and ethyl acetoacetate, upon reaction, furnished the functionalized coumarin (20) in 98% yield within 10 min. On the other front, the same DES at relatively lower reaction temperature (90 °C) was found to provide the bis-coumarins in decent yields (81-97%) within 20-45 min. Moreover, this particular method was found to be quite effective for large-scale coumarin synthesis without noteworthy reduction in the yields of the desired products. Noticeably, in this versatile approach, the DES plays a dual role as solvent as well as catalyst, and it was effectively recycled and reused four times with no significant drop-down in the yield of the product.

Abstract
Fusion of the cyclopropane ring bearing two vicinal acceptors to the pre-aromatic dihydrophenanthrene ring, which is constructed by the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling between the vicinal aromatic rings, is found to effectively direct the cleavage of the electronically unfavored cyclopropane bond between the vicinal acceptors. Consequently, a modular method for the rapid synthesis of dibenzo[f,h]isocoumarins from methyl ketones, aryl aldehydes, and α-keto esters via a reaction cascade of aldol condensation, Kukhtin-Ramirez cyclopropanation, Pd-catalyzed direct arylation, and acid-promoted aromatization has been realized.

Abstract
A concise and environmentally friendly protocol has been developed for the synthesis of cis-dihydrochromenones and trans-dihydrochromenones in EtOH at room temperature. Irradiation of 4-phenyl-3-arylcoumarins in EtOH with 313 nm UV light under an argon atmosphere at room temperature gave cis-4b,15c-dihydro-16H-benzofuro[3',2':7,8]phenanthro[9,10-c]chromen-16-ones and cis-8c,14b-dihydro-9H-benzo[11,12]chryseno[5,6-c]chromen-9-ones in good yields. And an analogous treatment of 4-phenyl-3-alkenylcoumarins as 4-phenyl-3-arylcoumarins provided trans-1,2,3,4,4a,14b-hexahydro-5H-phenanthro[9,10-c]chromen-5-ones. The described photorearrangement proceeded smoothly without the addition of any transition metals and additives. The photorearrangement of 4-phenyl-3-arylcoumarins is believed to proceed via 6π-electrocyclization, a [1,3]-hydrogen shift and keto-enol isomerization.
