Strong, Nonresonant Radiation Enhances Cis-Trans Photoisomerization of Stilbene in Solution

4a,4b-Dihydrophenanthrene → cis-stilbene photoconversion: TD-DFT/DFT study

CONTEXT

DHP → CS photoconversion was analyzed in terms of electron density redistribution for the first time. The following explanation for the non-recovery of the C4a-C4b bond upon CS relaxation is proposed: during this process, the Coulomb repulsion energy between these pairs of atoms increases by almost one and a half times, and their bonding by an electron at LUMO is insufficient to recover the C4a-C4b bond. According to calculations, upon CS relaxation, the linker connecting the benzene rings undergoes significant structural changes. In this case, the distance between the C4a and C4b atoms increases from 3.00 Å to 3.28 Å. Calculations showed that the C4a-C4b vibration of the DHP bond has a very low intensity. Therefore, thermal motion does not contribute to the rupture of this bond.

METHODS

All calculations were performed using the Gaussian16 software package at the B3LYP/6-311 +  + G(d,p)/IEFPCM theory level. B3LYP was the only hybrid functional supported by Gaussian16, which ensured the cleavage of the C4a-C4b bond of DHP while optimizing its S1 excited state. A quantitative description of the redistribution of electron density in the studied conformers was carried out using the analysis of the NPA of atomic charges. Cyclohexane was used as an implicitly specified non-polar solvent. Visualization of molecular orbitals, and electron densities, as well as plotting of calculated IR spectra, were performed using the Gaussview6 software package.

Nanoscale Saturn Systems Based on C60/70 Bucky Ball and a Newly Designed [4]Cyclopara-1,2-diphenylethylene Hoop: A Strategy for Fullerene Encapsulation Release and Selective Recognition for C70

A new carbonaceous nanohoop, [4]cyclopara-1,2-diphenylethylene ([4]CPDPE, composed by four 1,2-diphenylethylene units linked via the para of the phenyls), is designed together with two rational synthesis paths being proposed. The Saturn-like host-guest systems formed with the [4]CPDPE nanoring and fullerene C_60/70 are explored using density functional theory calculations. The results evidence that the geometry mutual matching between [4]CPDPE and C_60/70 is perfect, and the [4]CPDPE⊃C_60/70 complexes could be formed spontaneously with high binding energies. Thermodynamic calculation results show that it essentially prefers to selectively recognize C₇₀ over its smaller cousin C₆₀. More interestingly, the [4]CPDPE nanoring could present the regular ring cylinder and the saddle shapes via configuration transformation between its all-trans form and all-cis form, so as to theoretically realize the fullerene encapsulation and release under photoirradiation. Furthermore, the 2:1 interaction structure ([4]CPDPE₂⊃Dimer-C₆₀) and properties are investigated. Additionally, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra are simulated, and host-guest noncovalent interaction (NCI) regions are investigated based on the electron density and reduced density gradient (RDG), which may be helpful for a deep understanding of the present designed systems in future.

Non-Born-Oppenheimer effects in molecular photochemistry: an experimental perspective

Non-adiabatic couplings between Born-Oppenheimer (BO)-derived potential energy surfaces are now recognized as pivotal in describing the non-radiative decay of electronically excited molecules following photon absorption. This opinion piece illustrates how non-BO effects provide photostability to many biomolecules when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, yet in many other cases are key to facilitating 'reactive' outcomes like isomerization and bond fission. The examples are presented in order of decreasing molecular complexity, spanning studies of organic sunscreen molecules in solution, through two families of heteroatom containing aromatic molecules and culminating with studies of isolated gas phase H₂O molecules that afford some of the most detailed insights yet available into the cascade of non-adiabatic couplings that enable the evolution from photoexcited molecule to eventual products. Insights into the Effect of Trans-to-Cis Photoisomerization of a Co-coordinated Stilbene Derivative on the Luminescence of Di-β-diketonate Lanthanide Complexes

Five lanthanide complexes constructed from a stilbene derivative, (E)-N',N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-4-styrylbenzoyl hydrazide (HL), and two β-diketonates (2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, tta), with or without a trifluoroacetate anion (CF₃CO₂ ^-), namely, [Ln(tta)₂(HL) (CF₃CO₂)] [LnC₄₅H₃₂F₉N₄O₇S₂, Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Eu (3), or Gd (4)] and [Yb(tta)₂(L)] (YbC₄₃H₃₁F₆N₄O₅S₂ (5), L = deprotonated HL), were synthesized and characterized. Crystals of these five complexes were obtained and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes all belonged to the monoclinic P2₁/c space group. For La³⁺, Nd³⁺, Eu³⁺, and Gd³⁺, the central lanthanide ion was nine-coordinate with a monocapped twisted square antiprism polyhedron geometry. The central Yb³⁺ ion of complex 5 was eight-coordinate with a distorted double-capped triangular prism polyhedron geometry. Among the five complexes, trans-to-cis photoisomerization of the stilbene group in gadolinium complex 4 showed the largest quantum yield. Complexes 2, 3, and 4 showed dual luminescence and photoisomerization functions. The luminescence change of complex 3 was reversible upon the trans-to-cis photoisomerization process. The sensitization efficiencies of luminescent europium complex 3 in acetonitrile solutions and in the solid state were 49.9 and 42.6%, respectively. These medium sensitization efficiencies led to the observation of simultaneous photoisomerization and luminescence, which further confirmed our previous report that photoisomerization of the stilbene group within complexes was related to the lanthanide ion energy level and whether a ligand-to-metal center or ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer process was present. In complexes 1-5, in addition to the intramolecular absorption transition of the ligand itself (IL, π_HL-π_HL ^* and π_tta-π_tta*), the presence of a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer transition between tta and HL (LLCT, π_tta-π_HL ^* or π_HL-π_tta ^*) indicated whether the triplet-state energy of HL was able to transfer to the excited energy level of the lanthanide ions, leading to different extents of HL photoisomerization. These results provide an important route for the design of new dual-function lanthanide-based optical switching materials.

Spectral photokinetic conversion of the fluorescent probes BSB and K114 for improved detection of amyloid assemblies

Cross-β-sheet-rich protein fibrils are infamous for their accumulation in the brains of patients diagnosed with a number of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Disease-relevant fibrils are a result of deviation of the proteins from their native structure to a misfolded state resulting in aggregation and formation of fibrils. In this study, we explored the phenomenon of light-induced fluorescence enhancement of amyloid assemblies stained with two amyloid probes (BSB and K114) using Bombyx mori silk and human AD brain sections. The photoconversion effect, accompanied by an increase in fluorescence intensity and spectral blue-shift, was highly dependent on the chemical structures of the dyes, pH, presence of glycerol and the type of amyloid. The degree of intensity and spectral change over time in response to high laser exposure were quantified and analyzed using custom-written analysis tools. Our findings provide further insight into possible mechanisms of amyloid-mediated photoconversion kinetics of K114 and BSB, and may provide more insight into the molecular nature of various amyloid assemblies.
