Detection of a Criegee Intermediate with an Unsaturated Hydrocarbon Substituent: Fourier-Transform Microwave Spectroscopy of Methyl Vinyl Ketone Oxide

Infrared Spectrum of the Adduct 2-Chloro-2-hydroperoxybut-3-ene [(C2H3)CCl(CH3)OOH] of the Reaction between the Criegee Intermediate Methyl Vinyl Ketone Oxide [C2H3C(CH3)OO] and HCl

Methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVKO, C2H3C(CH3)OO) is an important Criegee intermediate produced from ozonolysis of isoprene, which is the most abundant nonmethane hydrocarbon emitted into the atmosphere. Reactions between Criegee intermediate and hydrogen chloride (HCl) are important because of their large rate coefficients. In this work, we photolyzed a mixture of (Z)-(CH2I)HC═C(CH3)I/HCl/O2 at 248 nm to produce MVKO to carry out the reaction MVKO + HCl and recorded infrared spectra of transient species with a step-scan Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectrometer. Eleven bands near 1415, 1381, 1350, 1249, 1178, 1118, 1103, 1065, 978, 931, and 895 cm-1 were observed and assigned to the hydrogen-transferred adduct (C2H3)CCl(CH3)OOH (2-chloro-2-hydroperoxybut-3-ene, CHPB) according to the predicted IR spectrum using the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ method; the conformation could not be definitively determined. According to calculations, most low-energy conformers can interconvert, and the most stable conformers anti-trans-CHPB and syn-trans-CHPB might have the major contributions. Four bands near 1423, 1360, 1220, and 1080 cm-1 were observed and tentatively assigned to the OH-decomposition products (C2H3)CCl(CH3)O (1-chloro-1-methyl-2-propenyloxy, CMP); both trans-CMP and cis-CMP might contribute. Unlike in the case of CH2OO + HCl and CH3CHOO + HCl, in which secondary reactions of the OH-decomposition products reacted readily with O2 to produce the dehydrated products HC(O)Cl and CH3C(O)Cl, respectively, the secondary reaction of CMP with O2 was not observed because there is no feasible H atom in CMP for O2 to abstract.

Detection of a C4 Criegee Intermediate: Fourier-Transform Microwave Spectroscopy of Methacrolein Oxide

Pure rotational transitions of methacrolein oxide (MACRO) were observed by Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy. Among the four low-lying conformers existing within an energy window of 3 kcal/mol, only the lowest-energy conformer, the anti-trans conformer, was detected in a discharged jet of a 1,3-diiode-2-methylprop-1-ene and O2 mixture diluted in Ar. Nineteen pure rotational transitions, in the frequency range from 10 to 25 GHz, most of them showing A/E splitting due to the methyl-top internal rotation, were observed and analyzed by the XIAM program, yielding the internal rotation barrier of 559 cm-1, which very well agrees with a theoretically calculated value, 558 cm-1, at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level of theory.

Master Equation Studies of the Unimolecular Decay of Thermalized Methacrolein Oxide: The Impact of Atmospheric Conditions

Master equation simulations of the unimolecular reaction dynamics of the Criegee intermediate methacrolein oxide (MACR oxide) have been performed under a variety of temperature and pressure conditions. These simulations provide insight into how the unimolecular kinetics vary across temperatures spanning the range 288-320 K. This work has incorporated a new potential energy surface and includes the anti-to-syn and cis-to-trans conformational dynamics of MACR oxide, as well as the unimolecular reactions to form dioxirane and dioxole species. The competition between the unimolecular reactivity of MACR oxide and previously documented bimolecular reactivity of MACR oxide with water vapor is explored, focusing on how this competition is affected by changes in atmospheric conditions. The impact on the role of MACR oxide as an atmospheric oxidant of SO₂ is noted.

The photoisomerization mechanism of methacrolein oxide (MACR-OO): the cyclic dioxole formation pathway revealed

Methacrolein oxide (MACR-OO), the isopropenyl substituted Criegee intermediate (CI), is one product of isoprene ozonolysis. In this work, we report MACR-OO's photo-isomerization paths with electronic structure calculation at the CASSCF and MS-CASPT2 levels and trajectory surface-hopping (TSH) nonadiabatic dynamics simulation at the CASSCF level. Our calculated results show that the ring-closure is the dominant photo-induced unimolecular isomerization of MACR-OO in the S₁ state. In addition, a new photo-induced ring-closure to heterocyclopentane dioxole in syn_syn-MACR-OO is found. The findings of MACR-OO are expected to deepen the understanding of the substituted CIs and their photochemistry.

Photodissociation dynamics of methyl vinyl ketone oxide: A four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediate from isoprene ozonolysis

The electronic spectrum of methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVK-oxide), a four-carbon Criegee intermediate derived from isoprene ozonolysis, is examined on its second π* ← π transition, involving primarily the vinyl group, at UV wavelengths (λ) below 300 nm. A broad and unstructured spectrum is obtained by a UV-induced ground state depletion method with photoionization detection on the parent mass (m/z 86). Electronic excitation of MVK-oxide results in dissociation to O (¹D) products that are characterized using velocity map imaging. Electronic excitation of MVK-oxide on the first π* ← π transition associated primarily with the carbonyl oxide group at λ > 300 nm results in a prompt dissociation and yields broad total kinetic energy release (TKER) and anisotropic angular distributions for the O (¹D) + methyl vinyl ketone products. By contrast, electronic excitation at λ ≤ 300 nm results in bimodal TKER and angular distributions, indicating two distinct dissociation pathways to O (¹D) products. One pathway is analogous to that at λ > 300 nm, while the second pathway results in very low TKER and isotropic angular distributions indicative of internal conversion to the ground electronic state and statistical unimolecular dissociation.

Reactivity and internal dynamics in the Criegee intermediate CH2OOCO2 system: A rotational study

The reaction system between the simplest Criegee intermediate, CH₂OO, and the greenhouse gas CO₂ has been investigated by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The CH₂OO-CO₂ weakly bound complex was identified in the rotational spectrum, where inversion doublets due to the tunnelling motion between two equivalent configurations of the complex, with CO₂ located at one side or the other side of the CH₂OO plane, were observed. Using a two-state torsion-rotation Hamiltonian, a complete set of rotational and centrifugal distortion constants for both tunneling states were derived. In addition, the torsional energy difference between both states could be accurately determined, being 23.9687 MHz. The non-observation of the cycloaddition reaction product is in agreement with our ab initio calculations and with previous results that concluded that the reactivity of CIs toward CO₂ is measured to be quite limited.

Infrared characterization of formation and resonance stabilization of the Criegee intermediate methyl vinyl ketone oxide

Methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVKO) is an important Criegee intermediate in the ozonolysis of isoprene. MVKO is resonance stabilized by its allyl moiety, but no spectral characterization of this stabilization was reported to date. In this study, we photolyzed a mixture of 1,3-diiodo-but-2-ene and O₂ to produce MVKO and characterized the syn-trans-MVKO, and tentatively syn-cis-MVKO, with transient infrared spectra recorded using a step-scan Fourier-transform spectrometer. The O‒O stretching band at 948 cm^-1 of syn-trans-MVKO is much greater than the corresponding bands of syn-CH₃CHOO and (CH₃)₂COO Criegee intermediates at 871 and 887 cm^-1, respectively, confirming a stronger O‒O bond due to resonance stabilization. We observed also iodoalkenyl radical C₂H₃C(CH₃)I upon photolysis of the precursor to confirm the fission of the terminal allylic C‒I bond rather than the central vinylic C‒I bond of the precursor upon photolysis. At high pressure, the adduct C₂H₃C(CH₃)IOO was also observed. The reaction mechanism is characterized.
