Evaluation of Single-Reference DFT-Based Approaches for the Calculation of Spectroscopic Signatures of Excited States Involved in Singlet Fission

Computational Discovery of Intermolecular Singlet Fission Materials Using Many-Body Perturbation Theory

Intermolecular singlet fission (SF) is the conversion of a photogenerated singlet exciton into two triplet excitons residing on different molecules. SF has the potential to enhance the conversion efficiency of solar cells by harvesting two charge carriers from one high-energy photon, whose surplus energy would otherwise be lost to heat. The development of commercial SF-augmented modules is hindered by the limited selection of molecular crystals that exhibit intermolecular SF in the solid state. Computational exploration may accelerate the discovery of new SF materials. The GW approximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW+BSE) within the framework of many-body perturbation theory is the current state-of-the-art method for calculating the excited-state properties of molecular crystals with periodic boundary conditions. In this Review, we discuss the usage of GW+BSE to assess candidate SF materials as well as its combination with low-cost physical or machine learned models in materials discovery workflows. We demonstrate three successful strategies for the discovery of new SF materials: (i) functionalization of known materials to tune their properties, (ii) finding potential polymorphs with improved crystal packing, and (iii) exploring new classes of materials. In addition, three new candidate SF materials are proposed here, which have not been published previously.

Computational Approaches for Organic Semiconductors: From Chemical and Physical Understanding to Predicting New Materials

While a complete understanding of organic semiconductor (OSC) design principles remains elusive, computational methods─ranging from techniques based in classical and quantum mechanics to more recent data-enabled models─can complement experimental observations and provide deep physicochemical insights into OSC structure-processing-property relationships, offering new capabilities for in silico OSC discovery and design. In this Review, we trace the evolution of these computational methods and their application to OSCs, beginning with early quantum-chemical methods to investigate resonance in benzene and building to recent machine-learning (ML) techniques and their application to ever more sophisticated OSC scientific and engineering challenges. Along the way, we highlight the limitations of the methods and how sophisticated physical and mathematical frameworks have been created to overcome those limitations. We illustrate applications of these methods to a range of specific challenges in OSCs derived from π-conjugated polymers and molecules, including predicting charge-carrier transport, modeling chain conformations and bulk morphology, estimating thermomechanical properties, and describing phonons and thermal transport, to name a few. Through these examples, we demonstrate how advances in computational methods accelerate the deployment of OSCsin wide-ranging technologies, such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic thermoelectrics, organic batteries, and organic (bio)sensors. We conclude by providing an outlook for the future development of computational techniques to discover and assess the properties of high-performing OSCs with greater accuracy.

Plenty of Room on the Top: Pathways and Spectroscopic Signatures of Singlet Fission from Upper Singlet States

We investigate dynamic signatures of the singlet fission (SF) process triggered by the excitation of a molecular system to an upper singlet state S_N (N > 1) and develop a computational methodology for the simulation of nonlinear spectroscopic signals revealing the S_N → TT₁ SF in real time. We demonstrate that SF can proceed directly from the upper state S_N, bypassing the lowest excited state, S₁. We determine the main S_N → TT₁ reaction pathways and show by computer simulation and spectroscopic measurements that the S_N-initiated SF can be faster and more efficient than the traditionally studied S₁ → TT₁ SF. We claim that the S_N → TT₁ SF offers novel promising opportunities for engineering SF systems and enhancing SF yields.

An optimally tuned range-separated hybrid starting point for ab initio GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation calculations of molecules

The ab initio GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation (GW-BSE, where G is the one particle Green's function and W is the screened Coulomb interaction) approach has emerged as a leading method for predicting excitations in both solids and molecules with a predictive power contingent upon several factors. Among these factors are the (1) generalized Kohn–Sham eigensystem used to construct the GW self-energy and to solve the BSE and (2) the efficacy and suitability of the Tamm–Dancoff approximation. Here, we present a detailed benchmark study of low-lying singlet excitations from a generalized Kohn–Sham (gKS) starting point based on an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OTRSH) functional. We show that the use of this gKS starting point with one-shot G0W0 and G0W0-BSE leads to the lowest mean absolute errors (MAEs) and mean signed errors (MSEs), with respect to high-accuracy reference values, demonstrated in the literature thus far for the ionization potentials of the GW100 benchmark set and for low-lying neutral excitations of Thiel’s set molecules in the gas phase, without the need for self-consistency. The MSEs and MAEs of one-shot G0W0-BSE@OTRSH excitation energies are comparable to or lower than those obtained with other functional starting points after self-consistency. Additionally, we compare these results with linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations and find GW-BSE to be superior to TDDFT when calculations are based on the same exchange-correlation functional. This work demonstrates tuned range-separated hybrids used in combination with GW and GW-BSE can greatly suppress starting point dependence for molecules, leading to accuracy similar to that for higher-order wavefunction-based theories for molecules without the need for costlier iterations to self-consistency.

Structure Set in Stone: Designing Rigid Linkers to Control the Efficiency of Intramolecular Singlet Fission

Research on materials facilitating efficient singlet fission (SF) is driven by a possible reduction of thermalization losses in organic photovoltaic devices. Intramolecular SF (iSF) is in this context of special interest, as the targeted modification of either chromophores or linkers enables gradual variations of molecular properties. In this combined synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational work, we present and investigate nine novel spiro-linked azaarene dimers, which undergo efficient iSF with triplet yields up to 199%. Additional molecular braces enhance the rigidity of these tailor-made dimers (TMDs), resulting in great agreement between crystal structures and predicted optimal geometries for iSF in solution. Regardless of the employed chromophores and linkages, the dynamics of all nine TMDs are perfectly described by a unified kinetic model. Most notably, an increase in the orbital overlap of the π-systems by decreasing the twist angle between the two chromophores does not only increase the rate of formation of the correlated triplet pair but also further promotes its decorrelation. This new structure-function relationship represents a promising strategy toward TMDs with high triplet lifetimes to be utilized in optoelectronic devices.

Replacing hybrid density functional theory: motivation and recent advances

Density functional theory (DFT) is the most widely-used electronic structure approximation across chemistry, physics, and materials science. Every year, thousands of papers report hybrid DFT simulations of chemical structures, mechanisms, and spectra. Unfortunately, hybrid DFT's accuracy is ultimately limited by tradeoffs between over-delocalization and under-binding. This review summarizes these tradeoffs, and introduces six modern attempts to go beyond them while maintaining hybrid DFT's relatively low computational cost: DFT+U, self-interaction corrections, localized orbital scaling corrections, local hybrid functionals, real-space nondynamical correlation, and our rung-3.5 approach. The review concludes with practical suggestions for DFT users to identify and mitigate these tradeoffs' impact on their simulations.

Second Linear Response Theory and the Analytic Calculation of Excited-State Properties

We present a method based on second linear response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to calculate permanent and transition multipoles of excited states, which are required to compute excited-state absorption/emission spectra and multiphoton optical processes, among others. In previous work, we examined computations based on second linear response theory in which linear response TDDFT was employed twice. In contrast, the present methodology requires information from only a single linear response calculation to compute the excited-state properties. These are evaluated analytically through various algebraic operations involving electron repulsion integrals and excitation vectors. The present derivation focuses on full many-body wave functions instead of single orbitals, as in our previous approach. We test the proposed method by applying it to several diatomic and triatomic molecules. This shows that the computed excited-state dipoles are consistent with respect to reference equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations.

Excitonic and charge transfer interactions in tetracene stacked and T-shaped dimers

Extended quantum chemical calculations were performed for the tetracene dimer to provide benchmark results, analyze the excimer survival process, and explore the possibility of using long-range-corrected (LC) time-dependent second-order density functional tight-biding (DFTB2) for this system. Ground- and first-excited-state optimized geometries, vertical excitations at relevant minima, and intermonomer displacement potential energy curves (PECs) were calculated for these purposes. Ground-state geometries were optimized with the scaled-opposite-spin (SOS) second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory and LC-DFT (density functional theory) and LC-DFTB2 levels. Excited-state geometries were optimized with SOS-ADC(2) (algebraic diagrammatic construction to second-order) and the time-dependent approaches for the latter two methods. Vertical excitations and PECs were compared to multireference configuration interaction DFT (DFT/MRCI). All methods predict the lowest-energy S₀ conformer to have monomers parallel and rotated relative to each other and the lowest S₁ conformer to be of a displaced-stacked type. LC-DFTB2, however, presents some relevant differences regarding other conformers for S₀. Despite some state-order inversions, overall good agreement between methods was observed in the spectral shape, state character, and PECs. Nevertheless, DFT/MRCI predicts that the S₁ state should acquire a doubly excited-state character relevant to the excimer survival process and, therefore, cannot be completely described by the single reference methods used in this work. PECs also revealed an interesting relation between dissociation energies and the intermonomer charge-transfer interactions for some states.
