Anti-Kasha Conformational Photoisomerization of a Heteroleptic Dithiolene Metal Complex Revealed by Ultrafast Spectroscopy

Bifurcation of Excited-State Population Leads to Anti-Kasha Luminescence in a Disulfide-Decorated Organometallic Rhenium Photosensitizer

We report a rhenium diimine photosensitizer equipped with a peripheral disulfide unit on one of the bipyridine ligands, [Re(CO)3(bpy)(S-Sbpy4,4)]+ (1+, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, S-Sbpy4,4 = [1,2]dithiino[3,4-c:6,5-c']dipyridine), showing anti-Kasha luminescence. Steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopies complemented by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations are used to disclose its excited-state dynamics. The calculations show that after intersystem crossing the complex evolves to two different triplet minima: a (S-Sbpy4,4)-ligand-centered excited state (3LC) lying at lower energy and a metal-to-(bpy)-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) state at higher energy, with relative yields of 90% and 10%, respectively. The 3LC state involves local excitation of the disulfide group into the antibonding σ* orbital, leading to significant elongation of the S-S bond. Intriguingly, it is the higher-lying 3MLCT state, which is assigned to display luminescence with a lifetime of 270 ns: a signature of anti-Kasha behavior. This assignment is consistent with an energy barrier ≥ 0.6 eV or negligible electronic coupling, preventing reaction toward the 3LC state after the population is trapped in the 3MLCT state. This study represents a striking example on how elusive excited-state dynamics of transition-metal photosensitizers can be deciphered by synergistic experiments and state-of-the-art calculations. Disulfide functionalization lays the foundation of a new design strategy toward harnessing excess energy in a system for possible bimolecular electron or energy transfer reactivity.

Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Organic Long-Persistent Luminescence Originating from Excited-State Long-Range Proton Transfer

Stimuli-responsive functional luminescent materials with tunable color and long-persistent emission have emerged as a powerful tool in information encryption, anticounterfeiting, and bioelectronics. Herein, we prove a novel strategy for manipulating the proton transfer pathways in the salicylaldehyde derivative EQCN solutions/powder to produce excitation wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) performances with switchable emissions (blue-sky, green, and orange). The experiments and theoretical results demonstrated that the different luminous colors are originated from enol (E) form (blue-sky), Keto-1 (K1) form (orange) through the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, and Keto-2 (K2) form (green) through the excited-state long-range proton transfer (ESLRPT) process. We leverage synergistic effects between the dopant and matrix (dimethyl terephthalate, DTT) to manipulate the excited-state proton transfer pathway in EQCN@DTT mixture powders to generate Ex-De long-persistent luminescence (Ex-De-LPL), which can be well applied in multilevel information encryption. This strategy not only paves an intriguing way for the construction and preparation of pure organic Ex-De materials but also offers a guideline for developing LPL materials based on ESLRPT processes.

Computational Protocol to Calculate the Phosphorescence Energy of Pt(II) Complexes: Is the Lowest Triplet Excited State Always Involved in Emission? A Comprehensive Benchmark Study

The reliable calculation of phosphorescence energies of phosphor materials is at the core of designing efficient phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Therefore, it is of paramount importance to have a robust computational protocol to perform those calculations in a black-box manner. In this work, we use Domain-Based Local Pair Natural Orbital Coupled Cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitation (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations to attain the phosphorescence energies of a large pool of Pt(II) complexes. Several approaches to incorporate relativistic effects in our calculations were tested. In addition, we have used the DLPNO-CCSD(T) values (i.e., our best theoretical values) to assess the performance of different flavors of density functional theory including pure, hybrid, meta-hybrid, and range-separated functionals. Among the tested functionals, the M06HF functional provides the best values compared with the DLPNO-CCSD(T) ones, with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) value of 0.14 eV. In its turn, and thanks to the increased accuracy achieved in the calculation of phosphorescence energies, we also demonstrate that not all of the investigated complexes emit from their lowest-lying triplet state (T₁). The outlier complexes include different complex photophysical scenarios and both Kasha and anti-Kasha types of complexes. Finally, we provide a general computational protocol to pre-screen whether T₁ is actually the emissive state and to accurately calculate the phosphorescence energies of Pt(II) complexes.

Reversible On-Off Switching of Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Emission of a Phosphorescent Soft Salt Based on Platinum(II) Complexes

Excitation-wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) emission materials show excellent potential in diverse advanced photonic areas. Of significant importance is the on-demand regulation of the Ex-De luminescence behavior of these materials, which is previously unprecedented. In this study, we report on a platinum(II) complex-based phosphorescent soft salt S1 ([Pt(tpp)(ed)]⁺[Pt(ftpp)(CN)₂]^- (where ttp = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine, ed = ethane-1,2-diamine, and ftpp = 2-(4-fluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine)) with Ex-De photoluminescence (PL) property. UV-visible absorption and PL spectra of S1 were recorded in DMSO-H₂O mixture (1 × 10^-3 M) with various H₂O fractions to investigate its ground and excited states. Interestingly, the PL spectra of S1 powder show that its maximum emission peak is red-shifted from 595 to 644 nm upon excitation at different wavelengths from 360 to 520 nm, accompanied by an obvious emission color change from yellow-orange to red. Furthermore, confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy was employed to determine the PL property of self-assembled uniform S1 nanostructure, and the result shows that the Ex-De emission behavior is absent. On the basis of these results, we conclude the various Pt(II)···Pt(II) distances that exist are the major factor responsible for the properties of the Ex-De PL of S1 powder. Thus, for the first time, reversible on-off switching of Ex-De PL of S1 was achieved by manipulating its Pt(II)···Pt(II) distances through mechanical stress and vapor fuming. Finally, we demonstrate the high-level anticounterfeiting applications via on-demand multicolor displays.

Insight into the Properties of Heteroleptic Metal Dithiolenes: Multistimuli Responsive Luminescence, Chromism, and Nonlinear Optics

A comprehensive investigation of the functional properties of heteroleptic donor-M-acceptor dithiolene complexes Bu₄N[M^II(L1)(L2)] is presented (M = Pd, Pt). The acceptor L1 consists of the chiral (R)-(+)α-methylbenzyldithiooxamidate ((R)-α-MBAdto), the donor L2 is 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato (dmit) in 1 (Pd) and 2 (Pt), 1,2-dicarbomethoxyethylenedithiolate (ddmet) in 3 (Pd) and 4 (Pt), or [4',5':5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline-1',3'-dithiolato (quinoxdt) in 5 (Pd) and 6 (Pt). L1 is capable of undergoing proton exchange and promoting crystal formation in noncentrosymmetric space groups. L2 has different molecular structures while it maintains similar electron-donating capabilities. Thanks to the synergy of the ligands, 1-6 behave as H⁺ and Ag⁺ switchable linear chromophores. Moreover, the compounds exhibit a H⁺-switchable second-order NLO response in solution, which is maintained in the bulk for 1, 3, and 4 when they are embedded into a PMMA poled matrix. 5 and 6 show unique anti-Kasha H⁺ and Ag⁺ tunable colored emission originating from the quinoxdt ligand. A correlation between the electronic structure and properties is shown through density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations.
