Experimental and Computational Investigations of the Tropospheric Photooxidation Reactions of 1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoro-2-Methyl-2-Propanol Initiated by OH Radicals and Cl Atoms

Cl atoms-initiated degradation of 1-Chlorobutane and 2-Chlorobutane: Kinetics, product analysis and atmospheric implications

The relative rate method was employed to investigate the kinetics of the Cl-initiated reactions of 1-chlorobutane (1-CB) and 2-chlorobutane (2-CB) over 263-363 K, and the measured rate coefficients at room temperature are (1.04 ± 0.24) × 10-10 and (5.84 ± 0.27) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively. The Arrhenius equations for the title reactions were derived to be k1-CB + Cl (T = 263-363 K) = (2.77 ± 0.72) × 10-11 exp [(422 ± 79)/T] and k2-CB + Cl (T = 263-363 K) = (1.40 ± 0.32) × 10-11 exp [(415 ± 70)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively. The products were analysed qualitatively using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the reaction mechanism was proposed for the reactions. The rate coefficients for the title reactions were calculated computationally over the temperature range of 200-400 K using canonical variational transition state theory with appropriate tunnelling corrections at CCSD(T)/6-311++G(2d,2p)//BHandHLYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory to complement our experimentally measured kinetic parameters. The experimental and theoretical data obtained were used to evaluate the impact of the studied molecules in the troposphere.

Auxiliary Therapeutic Role of Cholinergic Agents: Mechanistic Insights into the Antioxidant Behavior of Alzheimer's Disease Drugs

Repurposing of existing drugs toward new therapeutic use(s) has become an emergent area of research in current times. In this context, the antioxidant behavior of eight cholinergic drugs used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) was investigated theoretically. The low bond dissociation enthalpy values in all of the compounds advocated for the hydrogen atom transfer mechanism toward the observed antioxidant behavior. The kinetic study for the reaction of the drugs with hydroperoxyl radicals indicated an indirect reaction path owing to the presence of pre- and postreaction complexes. In some cases, the rate constant for the H-abstraction reaction (k = 2.8 × 10³ L mol^-1 s^-1) is found to be close to that of a well-known non-phenolic antioxidant, α-terpinene (k = 4.3 × 10³ L mol^-1 s^-1). Quantification of charge transfer character among the drugs with DNA bases and molecular docking calculations confirmed the groove binding model and predicted the drugs to be safe from DNA damage. A theoretical evaluation of the mechanistic details governing the antioxidant property along with the proven stress reversal ability of these AD drugs provided new insights to design and develop more efficient drugs with dual therapeutic potential.

Mechanism, Kinetics, and Ecotoxicity Assessment of ·OH-Initiated Oxidation Reactions of Sulfoxaflor

The ·OH-initiated reaction mechanism and kinetics of sulfoxaflor were investigated by using electronic structure calculations. The possible hydrogen atom and cyano group abstraction reaction pathways were studied, and the calculated thermochemical parameters show that the hydrogen atom abstraction from the C7 carbon atom is the more favorable reaction pathway. The subsequent reactions for the favorable intermediate (I4) with other atmospheric reactive species, such as O₂, H₂O, HO₂·, and NO_x· (x = 1, 2), were studied in detail. The products identified from the subsequent reactions could contribute to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere. The intermediates and products formed from the initial and subsequent reactions are equally as toxic as the parent sulfoxaflor. At 298 K, the rate constant calculated for the formation of the favorable intermediate I4 is 2.54 × 10^-12 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1, which shows that the lifetime of sulfoxaflor is 54 h. The excited-state calculation performed through time-dependent density functional theory shows that the photolysis of the title molecule is unlikely in the atmosphere. The global warming potentials (GWPs) for different time horizons, photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), and ecotoxicity analysis were also studied for the insecticide sulfoxaflor.
