Spectroscopic Characterization of HSO2• and HOSO• Intermediates Involved in SO2 Geoengineering

Efficient reductive recovery of arsenic from acidic wastewater by a UV/dithionite process

The removal of arsenic (As(III)) from acidic wastewater using neutralization or sulfide precipitation generates substantial arsenic-containing hazardous solid waste, posing significant environmental challenges. This study proposed an advanced ultraviolet (UV)/dithionite reduction method to recover As(III) in the form of valuable elemental arsenic (As(0)) from acidic wastewater, thereby avoiding hazardous waste production. The results showed that more than 99.9 % of As(III) was reduced to As(0) with the residual concentration of arsenic below 25.0 μg L-1 within several minutes when the dithionite/As(III) molar ratio exceeded 1.5:1 and the pH was below 4.0. The content of As(0) in precipitate reached 99.70 wt%, achieving the purity requirements for commercial As(0) products. Mechanistic investigations revealed that SO2·‒ and H· radicals generated by dithionite photolysis under UV irradiation are responsible for reducing As(III) to As(0). Dissolved O2, Fe(III), Fe(II), Mn(II), dissolved organic matter (DOM), and turbidity slightly inhibited As(III) reduction via free radicals scavenging or light blocking effect, whereas other coexisting ions, such as Mg(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), F(-I), and Cl(-I), had limited influence on As(III) reduction. Moreover, the cost of treating real arsenic-containing (250.3 mg L-1) acidic wastewater was estimated to be as low as $0.668 m-3, demonstrating the practical applicability of this method. This work provides a novel method for the reductive recovery of As(III) from acidic wastewater.

A-Band Absorption Spectrum of the ClSO Radical: Electronic Structure of the Sulfinyl Group

Sulfur oxide species (RSOx) play a critical role in many fields, ranging from biology to atmospheric chemistry. Chlorine-containing sulfur oxides may play a key role in sulfate aerosol formation in Venus' cloud layer by catalyzing the oxidation of SO to SO2 via sulfinyl radicals (RSO). We present results from the gas-phase UV-vis transient absorption spectroscopy study of the simplest sulfinyl radical, ClSO, generated from the pulsed-laser photolysis of thionyl chloride at 248 nm (at 40 Torr of N2 and 292 K). A weak absorption spectrum from 350 to 480 nm with a peak at 385 nm was observed, with partially resolved vibronic bands (spacing = 226 cm-1), and a peak cross section σ(385 nm) = (7.6 ± 1.9) × 10-20 cm2. From ab initio calculations at the EOMEE-CCSD/ano-pVQZ level, we assigned this band to 12A' ← X2A″ and 22A' ← X2A″ transitions. The spectrum was modeled as a sum of a bound-to-free transition to the 12A' state and a bound-to-bound transition to the 22A' state with similar oscillator strengths; the prediction agreed well with the observed spectrum. We attributed the vibronic structure to a progression in the bending vibration of the 22A' state. Further calculations at the XDW-CASPT2 level predicted a conical intersection between the excited 12A' and 22A' potential energy surfaces near the Franck-Condon region. The geometry of the minimum-energy conical intersection was similar to that of the ground-state geometry. The lack of structure at shorter wavelengths could be evidence of a short excited-state lifetime arising from strong vibronic coupling. From simplified molecular orbital analysis, we attributed the ClSO spectrum to transitions involving the out-of-plane π/π* orbitals along the S-O bond and the in-plane orbital possessing a σ/σ* character along the S-Cl bond. We hypothesize that these orbitals are common to other sulfinyl radicals, RSO, which would share a combination of a strong and a weak transition in the UV (near 300 nm) and visible (400-600 nm) regions.

Spectroscopy and photochemistry of ClSSO

Sulfur-chlorine cycles play a role in the atmosphere of Venus. It is thought that many sulfur-chlorine bearing molecules could be present in Venus's atmosphere and play an important role in its chemical processes. The goal of this work is to provide new insight into the electronic structure and spectroscopy of the [Cl, S, S, O] molecular system. Eight isomers could be formed, but only three were found to be thermodynamically stable relative to the first dissociation limit. We spectroscopically characterized the two lowest energy stable isomers, C1-ClSSO and trans-ClSSO, using the accurate CCSD(T)-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ method. The dipole moments of the two lowest energy stable isomers are predicted to be 1.90 and 1.60 debye, respectively. The C1-ClSSO isomer is suitable for laser induced fluorescence detection since the lowest excited electronic states absorb in the visible, ∼610 nm, and near UV region, 330 nm. We mapped the evolution of the low-lying excited electronic states along the ClS, SS, and SO bond lengths to find that the production of ClS, SO, or S₂O is plausible, whereas the production of ClS₂ is not allowed.

Unraveling sulfur chemistry in interstellar carbon oxide ices

Formyl radical (HCO•) and hydroxycarbonyl radical (HOCO•) are versatile building blocks in the formation of biorelevant complex organic molecules (COMs) in interstellar medium. Understanding the chemical pathways for the formation of HCO• and HOCO• starting with primordial substances (e.g., CO and CO2) is of vital importance in building the complex network of prebiotic chemistry. Here, we report the efficient formation of HCO• and HOCO• in the photochemistry of hydroxidooxidosulfur radical (HOSO•)–a key intermediate in SO2 photochemistry–in interstellar analogous ices of CO and CO2 at 16 K through hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions. Specifically, 266 nm laser photolysis of HOSO• embedded in solid CO ice yields the elusive hydrogen‑bonded complexes HCO•···SO2 and HOCO•···SO, and the latter undergoes subsequent HAT to furnish CO2···HOS• under the irradiation conditions. Similar photo-induced HAT of HOSO• in solid CO2 ice leads to the formation of HOCO•···SO2. The HAT reactions of HOSO• in astronomical CO and CO2 ices by forming reactive acyl radicals may contribute to understanding the interplay between the sulfur and carbon ice-grain chemistry in cold molecular clouds and also in the planetary atmospheric chemistry.

Fluoromethylsulfinyl radicals: spectroscopic characterization and photoisomerization via intramolecular hydrogen shift

Two new sulfinyl radicals, CHF₂SO˙ and CH₂FSO˙, have been generated in the gas phase through homolytic cleavage of the weak S-S bonds in disulfane oxides CHF₂S(O)SCF₃ and CH₂FS(O)SCF₃ by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) at ca. 500 °C. The IR spectroscopy characterization of the two fluoromethylsulfinyl radicals in solid N₂ (10 K), Ar (10 K), and Ne (3 K) matrices reveals the presence of two conformers for CHF₂SO˙ (gauche and cis) and one conformer for CH₂FSO˙ (gauche). Upon 266 nm laser irradiation, these radicals undergo both isomerization and decomposition in the matrices. In addition to the dominant formation of the elusive oxathiyl radicals CHF₂OS˙ (gauche and cis) and CH₂FOS˙ (gauche) via 1,2-alkyl migration, two higher-energy carbon-centered radicals ˙CF₂SOH and ˙CHFSOH bearing similar molecular structures to hydroperoxyalkyl radicals (˙QOOH) form via intramolecular 1,3-hydrogen shift in the two sulfinyl radicals. Additionally, the involvement of 1,3-hydrogen shift in CHF₂OS˙ and CH₂FOS˙ is also indicated by the observation of the fragmentation species. The identification of these radicals by matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy is aided by the quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. The stability of the isomers of the two sulfinyl radicals CHF₂SO˙ and CH₂FSO˙ has been discussed according to the experimental observations and also based on the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) calculated energy profiles.
