Rotational Mode-Specificity in the Cl + C2H6 → HCl + C2H5 Reaction

Dynamics of the Cl + CH3CN reaction on an automatically-developed full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface

A full-dimensional analytical potential energy surface (PES) is developed for the Cl + CH3CN reaction following our previous work on the benchmark ab initio characterization of the stationary points. The spin-orbit-corrected PES is constructed using the Robosurfer program and a fifth-order permutationally invariant polynomial method for fitting the high-accuracy energy points determined by a ManyHF-based coupled-cluster/triple-zeta-quality composite method. Quasi-classical trajectory simulations are performed at six collision energies between 10 and 60 kcal mol-1. Multiple low-probability product channels are found, including isomerization to isonitrile (CH3NC), but out of the eight possible channels, only the H-abstraction has significant reaction probability; thus, detailed dynamics studies are carried out only for this reaction. The cross sections and opacity functions show that the probability of the H-abstraction reaction increases with increasing collision energy (Ecoll). Scattering angle, initial attack angle, and product relative translational energy distributions indicate that the mechanism changes with the collision energy from indirect/rebound to direct stripping. The distribution of initial attack angles shows a clear preference for methyl group attack but with different angles at different Ecoll values. Post-reaction energy distributions show that the energy transfer is biased toward the products' relative translational energy instead of their internal energy. Rotational and vibrational energy have about the same amount of contribution to the internal energy in the case of both products (HCl and CH2CN), i.e., both of them are formed with high rotational excitations. HCl is produced mostly in the ground vibrational state, while a notable fraction of CH2CN is formed with vibrational excitation.

First-principles mode-specific reaction dynamics

Controlling the outcome of chemical reactions by exciting specific vibrational and/or rotational modes of the reactants is one of the major goals of modern reaction dynamics studies. In the present Perspective, we focus on first-principles vibrational and rotational mode-specific dynamics computations on reactions of neutral and anionic systems beyond six atoms such as X + C2H6 [X = F, Cl, OH], HX + C2H5 [X = Br, I], OH- + CH3I, and F- + CH3CH2Cl. The dynamics simulations utilize high-level ab initio analytical potential energy surfaces and the quasi-classical trajectory method. Besides initial state specificity and the validity of the Polanyi rules, mode-specific vibrational-state assignment for polyatomic product species using normal-mode analysis and Gaussian binning is also discussed and compared with experiment.

Stretching-mode specificity in the Cl + CH3D(v1-I, v1-II, and v4 = 1; |jK〉) reactions: dependency on the initial |jK〉 selectivity

The title reactions were studied at a collisional energy of 5.4 kcal mol^-1 in a crossed-beam product-imaging experiment. The dynamics attributes of the dominant ground-state CH₂D(0₀) and the accompanied C-D bend-excited CH₂D(6₁) products were imaged in reactions with totally 16 ro-vibrationally selected states of the CH₃D(v_i, |jK〉) reagents. We found that all three vibrational excitations yielded marked |jK〉-dependent rate-enhancements in forming the (0₀, 0/1)_s product pairs. Furthermore, for a given rotational |jK〉-mode, a vibrational-mode propensity of v₄ > v₁-I > v₁-II in rate promotion and a clear manifestation of the Fermi-phase-induced interference effect of the latter two were observed. Compared to the reactivity of the rotationless state |jK〉 = |00〉, a minute rotational-excitation of all three stretch-excited CH₃D(v_i = 1) reagents could yield significantly higher reaction rates for the product pair (0₀, 0)_s, but not so for (0₀, 1)_s. The signals in forming the (6₁, 0)_s pair were clearly notable but smaller than that of the ground-state reaction product pair, (0₀, 0)_g. An opposite propensity of v₁-II ≈ v₁-I > v₄ with a milder dependency on the initial |jK〉-states was observed. The angular distributions of the (0₀, 0)_s pairs were nearly identical for all ro-vibrationally excited reagents, displaying the typical trait for a direct abstraction of the rebound mechanism. Similar distributions were found for the (6₁, 0)_s pairs; yet, both pairs deviated substantially from the peripheral feature of the ground-state reaction pair of (0₀, 0)_g. Those of the (0₀, 1)_s pairs in reactions with v₄-excitation featured a prominent forward-peaking distribution-suggestive of a time-delayed, resonance-mediated pathway, again with little dependency on the initial |jK〉-states. As for the reactions with the two Fermi-dyads, v₁-I and v₁-II, albeit showing globally similar distributions to that for v₄, a substantial variation with the initial rotational-mode excitation could be discerned in the forward-peaking features. To unravel the impact of the Fermi-phase on the |jK〉-dependent attributes, we adopted a comparative approach by contrasting the observations in reactions with the Fermi-dyad reagents (the superposition states) to those with the pure-state reagents. Remarkable distinctions are unveiled and elucidated with the unexplained results explicitly pointed out, which call for future theoretical investigations for deeper understanding.

Full-dimensional automated potential energy surface development and dynamics for the OH + C2H6 reaction

We develop a full-dimensional analytical potential energy surface (PES) for the OH + C2H6 reaction using the Robosurfer program system, which automatically (1) selects geometries from quasi-classical trajectories, (2) performs ab initio computations using a CCSD(T)-F12/triple-zeta-quality composite method, (3) fits the energies utilizing the permutationally-invariant monomial symmetrization approach, and iteratively improves the PES via steps (1)−(3). Quasi-classical trajectory simulations on the new PES reveal that hydrogen abstraction leading to H2O + C2H5 dominates in the collision energy range of 10−50 kcal/mol. The abstraction cross sections increase and the dominant mechanism shifts from rebound (small impact parameters and backward scattering) to stripping (larger impact parameters and forward scattering) with increasing collision energy as opacity functions and scattering angle distributions indicate. The abstraction reaction clearly favors side-on OH attack over O-side and the least-preferred H-side approach, whereas C2H6 behaves like a spherical object with only slight C−C-perpendicular side-on preference. Collision energy efficiently flows into the relative translation of the products, whereas product internal energy distributions show only little collision energy dependence. H2O/C2H5 vibrational distributions slightly/significantly violate zero-point energy and are nearly independent of collision energy, whereas the rotational distributions clearly blue-shift as collision energy increases.
