Abstract
The modulation of the photophysical properties of di-substituted porphyrin rings upon the oxygen and sulfur-for-nitrogen replacement has been investigated at density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent formulation (TDDFT). The considered properties range from structural behaviors and excitation energies to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and nonradiative intersystem kinetic constants. Results show that the SOC strongly increase upon chalcogen substitution and, accordingly, the computed nonradiative kinetic constant also indicate an efficient singlet-triplet intersystem crossing in the sulfur containing macrocycle. The presented results indicate an alternative way to properly modulate the porphyrin's crucial properties for their use in photodynamic therapy, without resorting to the use of heavy atoms.

Abstract
In this work, a set of quasi-intrinsic photosensitizers are theoretically proposed based on the 2-amino-8-(1'-β-d-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-imidazo[1,2-α]-1,3,5-triazin-4(8H)-one (P), which could pair with the 6-amino-5-nitro-3-(1'-β-d-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-2(1H)-pyridone (Z) and keep the essential structural characters of nucleic acid. It is revealed that the ring expansion and electron-donating/electron-withdrawing substitution bring enhanced two-photon absorption and bright photoluminescence of these monomers, thereby facilitating the selective excitation and tumor localization through fluorescence imaging. However, instead of undergoing radiative transition (S1 → S0), the base pairing induced fluorescence quenching and rapid intersystem crossing (S1 → Tn) are observed and characterized by the reduced singlet-triplet energy gaps and large spin-orbit coupling values. To ensure the phototherapeutic properties of the considered base pairs in long-lived T1 state, we examined the vertical electron affinity as well as vertical ionization potential for production of superoxide anions via Type I photoreaction, and their required T1 energy (0.98 eV) to generate singlet oxygen 1O2 via Type II mechanism.

Abstract
The Psoralen (Pso) molecule finds extensive applications in photo-chemotherapy, courtesy of its triplet state forming ability. Sulfur and selenium replacement of exocyclic carbonyl oxygen of organic chromophores foster efficient triplet harvesting with near unity triplet quantum yield. These triplet-forming photosensitizers are useful in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) applications for selective apoptosis of cancer cells. In this work, we have critically assessed the effect of the sulfur and selenium substitution at the exocyclic carbonyl (TPso and SePso, respectively) and endocyclic oxygen positions of Psoralen. It resulted in a significant redshifted absorption spectrum to access the PDT therapeutic window with increased oscillator strength. The reduction in singlet-triplet energy gap and enhancement in the spin-orbit coupling values increase the number of intersystem crossing (ISC) pathways to the triplet manifold, which shortens the ISC lifetime from 10-5 s for Pso to 10-8 s for TPso and 10-9 s for SePso. The intramolecular photo-induced electron transfer process, a competitive pathway to ISC, is also considerably curbed by exocyclic functionalizations. In addition, a maximum of 115 GM of two-photon absorption (2PA) with IR absorption (660-1050 nm) confirms that the Psoralen skeleton can be effectively tweaked via single chalcogen atom replacement to design a suitable PDT photosensitizer.

Abstract
In this study, we explore the impact of halogen functionalization on the photophysical properties of the commonly used organic light-emitting diode (OLED) host material, 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene (mCP). Derivatives with different numbers and types of halogen substituents on mCP were synthesized. By measuring steady-state and transient photoluminescence at 6 K, we study the impact of the type, number, and position of the halogens on the intersystem crossing and phosphorescence rates of the compounds. In particular, the functionalization of mCP with 5 bromine atoms results in a significant increase of the intersystem crossing rate by a factor of 300 to a value of (1.5 ± 0.1) × 1010 s-1, and the phosphorescence rate increases by 2 orders of magnitude. We find that the singlet radiative decay rate is not significantly modified in any of the studied compounds. In the second part of the paper, we describe the influence of these compounds on the reverse intersystem crossing of the 7,10-bis(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-2,3-dicyanopyrazino-phenanthrene (TPA-DCPP), a TADF guest, via the external heavy atom effect. Their use results in an increase of the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate from (8.1 ± 0.8) × 103 s-1 for mCP to (2.7 ± 0.1) × 104 s-1 for mCP with 5 bromine atoms. The effect is even more pronounced for the mCP analogue containing a single iodine atom, which gives a RISC rate of (3.3 ± 0.1) × 104 s-1. Time-dependent DFT calculations reveal the importance of the use of long-range corrected functionals to predict the effect of halogenation on the optical properties of the mCP, and the relativistic approximation (ZORA) is used to provide insight into the strength of the spin-orbit coupling matrix element between the lowest-lying excited singlet and triplet states in the different mCP compounds.

Abstract
Two-photon photodynamic therapy (TP-PDT), as a treatment technology with deep penetration and less damage, provides a broad prospect for cancer treatment. Nowadays, the development of TP-PDT suffers from the low two-photon absorption (TPA) intensity and short triplet state lifetime of photosensitizers (PSs) used in TP-PDT. Herein, we propose some novel modification strategies based on the thionated NpImidazole (the combination of naphthalimide and imidazole) derivatives to make efforts on those issues and obtain corresponding fluorescent probes for detecting ClO- and excellent PSs for TP-PDT. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) are used to help us characterize the photophysical properties and TP-PDT process of the newly designed compounds. Our results show that the introduction of different electron-donating groups at the position 4 of NpImidazole can effectively improve their TPA and emission properties. Specifically, 3s with a N,N-dimethylamino group has a large triplet state lifetime (τ = 699 μs) and TPA cross section value (δTPA = 314 GM), which can effectively achieve TP-PDT; additionally, 4s (with electron-donating group 2-oxa-6-azaspiro[3.3]heptane in NpImidazole) effectively realizes the dual-function of a PS for TP-PDT (τ = 25,122 μs, δTPA = 351 GM) and a fluorescent probe for detecting ClO- (Φf = 29% of the product 4o). Moreover, an important problem is clarified from a microscopic perspective, that is, why the transition property of 3s and 4s (1π-π*) from S1 to S0 is different from that of 1s and 2s (1n-π*). It is hoped that our work can provides valuable theoretical clues for the design and synthesis of heavy-atom-free NpImidazole-based PSs and fluorescent probes for the detection of hypochlorite.

Abstract
The effect on the photophysical properties of sulfur- and selenium-for-oxygen replacement in the skeleton of the oxo-4-dimethylaminonaphthalimide molecule (DMNP) has been explored at the density functional (DFT) level of theory. Structural parameters, excitation energies, singlet–triplet energy gaps (ΔES-T), and spin–orbit coupling constants (SOC) have been computed. The determined SOCs indicate an enhanced probability of intersystem crossing (ISC) in both the thio- and seleno-derivatives (SDMNP and SeDMNP, respectively) and, consequently, an enhancement of the singlet oxygen quantum yields. Inspection of Type I reactions reveals that the electron transfer mechanisms leading to the generation of superoxide is feasible for all the compounds, suggesting a dual Type I/Type II activity.
