Decoding Chemical Bonds: Assessment of the Basis Set Effect on Overlap Electron Density Descriptors and Topological Properties in Comparison to QTAIM

On the sensitivity of computed partial charges toward basis set and (exchange-)correlation treatment

Partial charges are a central concept in general chemistry and chemical biology, yet dozens of different computational definitions exist. In prior work [Cho et al., ChemPhysChem 21, 688-696 (2020)], we showed that these can be reduced to at most three 'principal components of ionicity'. The present study addressed the dependence of computed partial charges q on 1-particle basis set and (for WFT methods) n -particle correlation treatment or (for DFT methods) exchange-correlation functional, for several representative partial charge definitions such as QTAIM, Hirshfeld, Hirshfeld-I, HLY (electrostatic), NPA, and GAPT. Our findings show that semi-empirical double hybrids can closely approach the CCSD(T) 'gold standard' for this property. In fact, owing to an error compensation in MP2, CCSD partial charges are further away from CCSD(T) than is MP2. The nonlocal correlation is important, especially when there is a substantial amount of nonlocal exchange. Employing range separation proves to be "mostly" not advantageous, while global hybrids perform optimally for 20%-30% Hartree-Fock exchange across all charge types. Basis set convergence analysis shows that an augmented triple-zeta heavy-aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z basis set or a partially augmented jun-cc-pV(T+d)Z basis set is sufficient for Hirshfeld, Hirshfeld-I, HLY, and GAPT charges. In contrast, QTAIM and NPA display slower basis set convergence. It is noteworthy that for both NPA and QTAIM, HF exhibits markedly slower basis set convergence than the correlation components of MP2 and CCSD. Triples corrections in CCSD(T), denoted as CCSD(T)-CCSD, exhibit even faster basis set convergence.

Bond analysis in meta- and para-substituted thiophenols: overlap descriptors, local mode analysis, and QTAIM

CONTEXT

This study delves into the chemical nuances of thiophenols and their derivatives through a comprehensive computational analysis, moving beyond traditional energetic perspectives such as bond dissociation enthalpy and S-H dissociation dynamics. By employing the overlap model along with its topological descriptors (OP/TOP), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and local vibrational mode (LVM) theories, the research provides a deeper understanding of the S-H and C-S bonding scenarios in substituted thiophenols. The investigation follows the electron-donating capacity of S-H substituent variation with the nature and positioning of other ring substituents. Energy profile analyses indicate distinct stability differences in the cis and trans conformations of meta- and para-PhSH systems, influenced by the electron-donating strength of these substituents. The study also uncovers significant variations in S-H bond distances and descriptor values, particularly in para-substituted PhSH, reflecting the influence of electron-donating or withdrawing substituents. In contrast, alterations at the meta-position show minimal effects on C-S bond descriptors, while para-substitutions markedly influence C-S bond characteristics, demonstrating a clear correlation with the electron-donating or withdrawing capabilities of the substituents. This research sheds light on the intricate bond dynamics in aromatic systems with diverse substituents, highlighting the complex interaction between electronic effects and molecular conformation.

METHODS

The study employs the ω B97X-D/Def2TZVP level of theory for molecular geometries, ensuring accurate characterization of structures as true minima via analytical harmonic frequency determination. The electronic properties of S-H and C-S bonds in variously substituted thiophenols were analyzed using OP/TOP, QTAIM, and LVM methodologies. Computational processes, including conformational scans, geometry optimizations, and vibrational frequency calculations, were conducted using Gaussian 09, with ultra-fine integration grids and tight convergence criteria for the SCF procedure. Bond descriptors were computed utilizing ChemBOS, Multiwfn, and LModeA software, providing a robust and detailed examination of bond properties.

Cobalt group transition metals (TM: Co, Rh, Ir) coordination of S-doped porphyrins (TM_S@PPR) as sensors for molecular SO2 gas adsorption: a DFT and QTAIM study

CONTEXT

The intricate challenges posed by SO2 gas underscore the imperative for meticulous monitoring and detection due to its adverse effects on health, the environment, and equipment integrity. Hence, this research endeavors to delve deeply into the intricate realm of transition-metals functionalized sulfur-doped porphyrins (S@PPR) surfaces through a comprehensive computational study. The electronic properties revealed that upon adsorption, Ir_S@PPR surface reflects the least energy gap of 0.109 eV at the O-site of adsorptions, indicating an increase in electrical conductivity which is a better adsorption trait. Owing to the negative adsorption energy observed, the adsorption behavior is described as chemisorption, with the greatest adsorption energy of - 10.306 eV for Ir_S@PPR surface at the S-site of adsorption. Based on the mechanistic attributes, iridium-functionalized S@PPR surface is a promising detecting material towards the sensing of SO2 gas. This report will provide useful insight for experimental researchers in selecting and engineering materials to be used as detectors for SO2 gas pollutant.

METHOD

All theoretical investigations were carried out using density functional theory (DFT), calculated at PW6B95-D3/GenECP/Def2svp/LanL2DZ computational method.
