First-Principles Calculations of Excited-State Decay Rate Constants in Organic Fluorophores

Thiocarbonyl-Bridged N-Heterotriangulenes for Energy Efficient Triplet Photosensitization: A Theoretical Perspective

Structurally-rigid metal-free organic molecules are of high demand for various triplet harvesting applications. However, inefficient intersystem crossing (ISC) due to large singlet-triplet gap (Δ E S - T ${\Delta {E}_{S-T}}$ ) and small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between lowest excited singlet and triplet often limits their efficiency. Excited electronic states, fluorescence and ISC rates in several thiocarbonyl-bridged N-heterotriangulene ( m ${m}$ S-HTG) with systematically increased thione content (m = ${m=}$ 0-3) are investigated implementing polarization consistent time-dependent optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid. All m ${m}$ S-HTGs are dynamically stable and also thermodynamically feasible to synthesize. Relative energies of several low-lying singlets (S n ${{S}_{n}}$ ) and triplets (T n ${{T}_{n}}$ ), and their excitation nature (i. e.,n π * ${n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ orπ π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ ) and SOC are determined for these m ${m}$ S-HTGs in dichloromethane. Low-energy optical peak displays gradual red-shift with increasing thione content due to relatively smaller electronic gap resulted from greater degree of orbital delocalization. Significantly large SOC due to different orbital-symmetry and heavy-atom effect produces remarkably high ISC rates (k I S C ${{k}_{ISC}}$ ~1012 s-1) for enthalpically favouredS 1 n π * → T 2 ${{S}_{1}\left(n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}\right)\to {T}_{2}}$ (π π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ ) channel in these m ${m}$ S-HTGs, which outcompete radiative fluorescence rates (~108 s-1) even directly from higher lying optically brightπ π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ singlets. Importantly, high energy triplet excitons of ~1.7 eV resulting from such significantly large ISC rates from non-fluorescentS 1 n π * ${{S}_{1}\left(n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}\right)}$ make these thiocarbonylated HTGs ideal candidates for energy efficient triplet harvest including triplet-photosensitization.

Theoretical Insights into the Photophysical Properties of 4CzIPN Doped in Different Hosts: A Multiscale Study

As a typical thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter with green emission, 4CzIPN has attracted much attention recently. Most studies indicated that 4CzIPN doped in different hosts presented different performances; thus, the hosts should have an obvious influence on its photophysical properties. Herein, the influence of four kinds of hosts, including m-CzPym, m-CzTrz, p-CzPym, and p-CzTrz, on the photophysical properties of 4CzIPN is investigated. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to simulate the host-guest conformations, and the photophysical properties were studied using the combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method coupled with the thermal-vibration correlation function method. It is found that 4CzIPN in doped films has larger transition dipole moments and spin-orbital coupling constants compared to that in nondoped films. Faster radiative decay, intersystem crossing rates, and higher fluorescence efficiency could be obtained in doped films. Our work helps to better understand the photophysical properties of 4CzIPN in doped films and may favor the design of new hosts.

Charge Transfer-Promoted Excited State of a Heavy-Atom-Free Photosensitizer for Efficient Application of Mitochondria-Targeted Fluorescence Imaging and Hypoxia Photodynamic Therapy

Conventional photosensitizers (PSs) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) have shown preliminary success; however, they are often associated with several limitations including potential dark toxicity in healthy tissues, limited efficacy under acidic and hypoxic conditions, suboptimal fluorescence imaging capabilities, and nonspecific targeting during treatment. In response to these challenges, we developed a heavy-atom-free PS, denoted as Cz-SB, by incorporating ethyl carbazole into a thiophene-fused BODIPY core. A comprehensive investigation into the photophysical properties of Cz-SB was conducted through a synergistic approach involving experimental and computational investigations. The enhancement of intersystem crossing (kISC) and fluorescence emission (kfl) rate constants was achieved through a donor-acceptor pair-mediated charge transfer mechanism. Consequently, Cz-SB demonstrated remarkable efficiency in generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under acidic and low-oxygen conditions, making it particularly effective for hypoxic cancer PDT. Furthermore, Cz-SB exhibited good biocompatibility, fluorescence imaging capabilities, and a high degree of localization within the mitochondria of living cells. We posit that Cz-SB holds substantial prospects as a versatile PS with innovative molecular design, representing a potential "one-for-all" solution in the realm of cancer phototheranostics.

Shedding light on thermally-activated delayed fluorescence

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a hot research topic in view of its impressive applications in a wide variety of fields from organic LEDs to photodynamic therapy and metal-free photocatalysis. TADF is a rare and fragile phenomenon that requires a delicate equilibrium between tiny singlet-triplet gaps, sizable spin-orbit couplings, conformational flexibility and a balanced contribution of charge transfer and local excited states. To make the picture more complex, this precarious equilibrium is non-trivially affected by the interaction of the TADF dye with its local environment. The concurrent optimization of the dye and of the embedding medium is therefore of paramount importance to boost practical applications of TADF. Towards this aim, refined theoretical and computational approaches must be cleverly exploited, paying attention to the reliability of adopted approximations. In this perspective, we will address some of the most important issues in the field. Specifically, we will critically review theoretical and computational approaches to TADF rates, highlighting the limits of widespread approaches. Environmental effects on the TADF photophysics are discussed in detail, focusing on the major role played by dielectric and conformational disorder in liquid solutions and amorphous matrices.

Theoretical design and performance prediction of deep red/near-infrared thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules with through space charge transfer

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with through-space charge transfer (TSCT) have attracted much attention in recent years because of their ability to simultaneously reduce the energy difference (ΔEST) and enlarge the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this paper, 40 molecules are theoretically designed by changing the different substitution positions of the donors and acceptors, and systematically investigated based on the first-principles calculations and excited-state dynamics study. It is found that the emission wavelengths of v-shaped molecules with intramolecular TSCT are larger than those of the molecules without TSCT. Therefore, the intramolecular TSCT can induce the red-shift of the emission and realize the deep-red/near-infrared emission. Besides intramolecular TSCT can simultaneously increase the SOC as well as the oscillator strength and reduce the ΔEST. In addition, PXZ or PTZ can also favor the realization of smaller ΔEST and red-shift emission. Our calculations suggest that intramolecular TSCT and suitable donors (-PXZ or -PTZ) are an effective strategy for the design of efficient deep red/near-infrared TADF emitters.

Estimating Nonradiative Excited-State Lifetimes in Photoactive Semiconducting Nanostructures

The time evolution of the exciton generated by light adsorption in a photocatalyst is an important feature that can be approached from full nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Here, a crucial parameter is the nonradiative recombination rate between the hole and the electron that form the exciton. In the present work, we explore the performance of a Fermi's golden rule-based approach on predicting the recombination rate in a set of photoactive titania nanostructures, relying solely on the coupling of the ground and first excited state. In this scheme the analysis of the first excited state is carried out by invoking Kasha's rule thus avoiding computationally expensive nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations and resulting in an affordable estimate of the recombination rate. Our results show that, compared to previous ones from nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, semiquantitative recombination rates can be predicted for the smaller titania nanostructures, and qualitative values are obtained from the larger ones. The present scheme is expected to be useful in the field of computational heterogeneous photocatalysis whenever a complex and computationally expensive full nonadiabatic molecular dynamics cannot be carried out.

Excellent ratiometric two-photon fluorescent probes for hydrogen sulfide detection based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is an important mechanism to design ratiometric fluorescent probes that are able to detect analytes quantitatively according to the ratio of two well-resolved emission signals. Two-photon (TP) fluorescent probes can realize the detection in living cells and tissues with deeper penetration depth, higher resolution, and lower photodamage in contrast to one-photon fluorescent probes. However, to date, fabricating TP-FRET ratiometric fluorescent probes possessing large two-photon absorption (TPA), high fluorescence quantum yield and perfect FRET efficiency is still challenging. Consequently, to develop excellent TP-FRET ratiometric probes and explore the relationship between their molecular structures and TP fluorescence properties, in this paper, we designed a series of H2S-detecting TP fluorescent probes employing the FRET mechanism based on an experimental probe BCD. Thereafter, we comprehensively evaluated the TP sensing performance of these probes by means of time-dependent density functional theory and quadratic response theory. Furthermore, we determined energy transfer efficiency and fluorescence quantum yield. Significantly, through regulating benzene-fused positions, we successfully improved fluorescence quantum yield and TPA cross-section simultaneously. Large spectral overlap between energy donor emission and acceptor absorption was achieved and near perfect energy transfer efficiency was acquired for all the studied probes. We revealed that these probes exhibit two well-resolved TPA bands, which are contributed by FRET donors and acceptors, respectively. Especially, both the wavelengths and the cross-sections of the two TPA bands agree well with those of energy donors and acceptors, which is the unique TPA spectral profile of FRET probes and has never been previously reported. Moreover, we proposed an excellent TP-FRET probe BCD3 and its product molecule BCD3-H2S, which exhibit large Stokes (141 nm and 88 nm) and emission shifts (5931 cm-1), as well as greatly increased TP action cross-sections (24-fold and 60-fold) in the near-infrared region with respect to BCD and BCD-H2S. Our detailed study can give an insight into the efficient design of novel TP-FRET fluorescent probes.
