Abstract
Donor-acceptor-based organic small molecules with an electronic push-pull effect can demonstrate intramolecular charge transfer to show interesting photoluminescence properties. This is an essential criterion for designing fluorogenic probes for cell imaging studies and the development of organic light-emitting diodes. Now, to design such optical materials sometimes it is necessary to tune the band gap by controlling the energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. Typically, the band gaps could be modulated by installing unsaturated handles between electron-rich donors and electron-deficient acceptors. However, these methods are often synthetically and economically challenging due to the involvement of expensive catalysts and difficult reaction setups. In our present study, we show a straightforward, cost-effective method for obtaining a series of donor-acceptor-type Vinylogous Cyano Aminoaryls (VinCAs) with diverse emission colors. Further studies reveal that these VinCAs can serve as effective cell imaging agents, showcasing potential use in chemical biology. Additionally, these molecules could be further used to generate white light emission (WLE), showing their potential utility in advanced lighting technologies.

Abstract
Chemical structures bearing a combination of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties attracted the attention of many researchers. Recently, there is an increasing demand to pose tunable AIEE and ICT fluorophores that could present their conformation changes-related emission colors by adjusting the medium polarity. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of 4-alkoxyphenyl-substituted 1,8-naphthalic anhydride derivatives NAxC using the Suzuki coupling reaction to construct donor-acceptor (D-A)-type fluorophores with alkoxyl substituents of varying carbon chain lengths (x = 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 in NAxC). To explain the observation that molecules with longer carbon chains revealed unusual fluorescence enhancement in water, we study the optical properties and evaluate their locally excited (LE) and ICT states by solvent effects combined with Lippert-Mataga plots. Then, we explored the self-assembly abilities of these molecules in water-organic (W/O) mixed solutions and observed the morphology of its nanostructure using a fluorescence microscope and SEM. The results show that NAxC, x = 4, 6, 12 show different degrees of self-assembly behaviors and corresponding aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) progresses. At the same time, different nanostructures and corresponding spectral changes can be obtained by adjusting the water ratio in the mixed solution. That is, NAxC compounds present different transitions between LE, ICT and AIEE based on the polarity, water ratio and time changes. We designed NAxC as the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the surfactant to demonstrate that AIEE comes from the formation of micelle-like nanoaggregates, which causes a restriction of the transfer from the LE state to the ICT state, and micelle formation results in a blue-shift in emission and enhances the intensity in the aggregate state. Among them, NA12C is most likely to form micelles and the most obvious fluorescence enhancement, which will switch over time due to the nano-aggregation transition.

Abstract
A simple fluorescent based organic fluorophore was synthesized and it shows significant fluorescent intensity with melatonin (MLN). Hence, it was applicable to the detection of MLN by colorimetric and fluorimetric techniques at neutral pH. Under optimized experimental condition, the synthesized organic fluorophore detects MLN selectively in the presence of other interfering biomolecules through ICT mechanism. The melatonin sensing mechanism is supported by DFT and 1H-NMR titration. Based on the findings, this method can be applied to design a simple clinical diagnostic tool for MLN.

Abstract
Most high-performance non-fullerene acceptors are of the acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A)-type structure. Under photoexcitation, the intramolecular charge transfer effect on the A-D-A framework results in a large dipole moment change, facilitating the efficient generation of charge carriers. Achieving more efficient intramolecular charge transfer by adjusting the molecular structure is one of the current research ideas. Recently, we found that the power conversion efficiency can be improved from 4.41 to 13.13% by tuning the planarity of the non-fused ring electron acceptor backbone through steric hindrance of lateral substituents. We found that the planar backbone can effectively improve the intramolecular charge transfer, which has a great influence on the power conversion efficiency of the device. Our results demonstrate that charge transfer dynamics can be controlled by optimizing steric hindrance, which plays a crucial role in the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract
We prepared a series of naphthalimide (NI)-carbazole (Cz) compact electron donor-acceptor dyads showing different substitution positions, C-N/C-C linkers, and conformation restriction magnitudes to study the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). The varied conformation restrictions lead to different dihedral angles between the donor and acceptor (37°-81°) and electronic coupling magnitude (matrix elements V: 1290-3070 cm-1). Based on the comparison between the dyads containing C-N and C-C linkers, we found that a large dihedral angle between the donor and acceptor is favorable to efficient SOCT-ISC. For one dyad, the singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ) is up to 84.4% (in dichloromethane), which is much higher than that of the previously reported NI-phenothiazine (PTZ) analogue dyad (ΦΔ = 16.0% in n-hexane). The intrinsic triplet state lifetime (τT) is 270 μs, longer than that accessed by the heavy atom effect (75.2 μs). As compared with the NI-PTZ analogue dyad, the Cz unit in the current dyads is a weaker electron donor than PTZ. Thus, a higher CT state energy in NI-Cz dyads was observed, which makes the SOCT-ISC efficient in solvents with a wide range of polarities. Meanwhile, the localized triplet state (3LE) becomes the lowest-lying state in the NI-Cz dyads, which is different from the triplet charge transfer (3CT) state observed in the analogue NI-PTZ dyad. Moreover, the large energy gap between the CT and 3LE states inhibits the reverse ISC; as a result, no thermally activated delayed fluorescence was observed for the current NI-Cz dyads.

Abstract
Laser was invented in 1960 and soon introduced to chemistry research. We started time-resolved spectroscopy and photochemistry and initial trial was focused to nanosecond and then picosecond electronic absorption spectroscopy for studying molecular electronic excited states, charge separation in molecular complexes, and intermolecular electron transfer in solution. We considered that not only time-resolved but also space-resolved chemistry would be important for future laser-based chemistry and combined pulsed lasers with optical microscopes. Spectroscopy, photochemistry, ablation, and spatial arrangement of single microparticles and microdroplets in solution were carried out. Further we shifted from micro to nano and opened a new field covering spectroscopy, ablation, phase transition, crystallization, patterning, and fabrication. The progress is summarized and discussed as time-resolved nano spectroscopy, ablation nano dynamics, and optical force chemistry.

Abstract
Six luminophores bearing an OBO-fused benzo[fg]tetracene core as an electron acceptor were designed and synthesized. The molecular structures of three molecules (PXZ-OBO, 5PXZ-OBO, 5DMAC-OBO) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and revealed significant torsion between the donor moieties and the OBO acceptor with dihedral angles between 75.5 and 86.2°. Photophysical studies demonstrate that blue and deep blue emission can be realized with photoluminescence maxima (λPL) ranging from 415 to 480 nm in mCP films. The emission energy is modulated by simply varying the strength of the donor heterocycle, the number of donors, and their position relative to the acceptor. Although the DMAC derivatives show negligible delayed emission because of their large singlet-triplet excited state energy difference, ΔEST, PXZ-based molecules, especially PXZ-OBO with an experimental ΔEST of 0.25 eV, demonstrate delayed emission in blend mCP films at room temperature, which suggests triplet exciton harvesting occurs in these samples, potentially by thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Abstract
Phenylenevinylene terpyridine (mepvpt) shows chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) with Cd(II) and chelation quenched fluorescence (CHQF) with Zn(II), respectively. To understand the behaviors, we studied their intrinsic optical properties using DFT/TDDFT methods. The results show that fluorescence quantum yields (FQY) of mepvpt, mepvpt-Cd and mepvpt-Zn are low due to high ISC rates from higher excited states rather than the S1 excited state. When mepvpt chelates Cd(II), the molecular structure becomes more planar and S3,4 → S0 radiation rates become higher than that of mepvpt, which results in CHEF. When mepvpt chelates Zn(II), a new S4 → S0 emission with low oscillator strength occurs and high S4 → Tn ISC rates appear, which leads to CHQF. This proposed mechanism of metal fluorescence enhancing/quenching suggests a design strategy for single-molecular multi-analyte sensors.

Abstract
Aromatic amines are aquatic contaminants for which phototransformation in surface waters can be induced by excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter (3DOM*). The first reaction step is assumed to consist of a one-electron oxidation process of the amine to produce its radical cation. In this paper, we present laser flash photolysis investigations aimed at characterizing the photoinduced, aqueous phase one-electron oxidation of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) as a representative of this contaminant class. The production of the radical cation of DMABN (DMABN˙+) after direct photoexcitation of DMABN at 266 nm was confirmed in accord with previous experimental results. Moreover, DMABN˙+ was shown to be produced from the reactions of several excited triplet photosensitizers (carbonyl compounds) with DMABN. Second-order rate constants for the quenching of the excited triplet states by DMABN were determined to fall in the range of 3 × 107-5 × 109 M-1 s-1, and their variation was interpreted in terms of electron transfer theory using a Rehm-Weller relationship. The decay kinetics of DMABN˙+ in the presence of oxygen was dominated by a second-order component attributed to its reaction with the superoxide radical anion (O2˙-). The first-order rate constant for the transformation of DMABN˙+ leading to photodegradation of DMABN was estimated not to exceed ≈5 × 103 s-1.

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfer across rigid rod-like oligo- p-phenylenes has been thoroughly investigated in the past, but their o-connected counterparts are yet entirely unexplored in this regard. We report on three molecular dyads comprised of a triarylamine donor and a Ru(bpy)32+ (bpy =2,2'-bipyridine) acceptor connected covalently by 2 to 6 o-phenylene units. Pulsed excitation of the Ru(II) sensitizer at 532 nm leads to the rapid formation of oxidized triarylamine and reduced ruthenium complex via intramolecular electron transfer. The subsequent thermal reverse charge-shift reaction to reinstate the electronic ground-state occurs on a time scale of 120-220 ns in deaerated CH3CN at 25 °C. The conformational flexibility of the o-phenylene bridges causes multiexponential transient absorption kinetics for the photoinduced forward process, but the thermal reverse reaction produces single-exponential transient absorption decays. The key finding is that the flexible o-phenylene bridges permit rapid formation of photoproducts storing ca. 1.7 eV of energy with lifetimes on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds, similar to what is possible with rigid rod-like donor-acceptor compounds. Thus, the conformational flexibility of the o-phenylenes represents no disadvantage with regard to the photoproduct lifetimes, and this is relevant in the greater context of light-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract
Regio- and conformational isomerization are fundamental in chemistry, with profound effects upon physical properties, however their role in excited state properties is less developed. Here two regioisomers of bis(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-S,S-dioxide, a donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, are studied. 2,8-bis(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-S,S-dioxide exhibits only one quasi-equatorial conformer on both donor sites, with charge-transfer (CT) emission close to the local triplet state leading to efficient TADF via spin-vibronic coupling. However, 3,7-bis(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-S,S-dioxide displays both a quasi-equatorial CT state and a higher-energy quasi-axial CT state. No TADF is observed in the quasi-axial CT emission. These two CT states link directly to the two folded conformers of phenothiazine. The presence of the low-lying local triplet state of the axial conformer also means that this quasi-axial CT is an effective loss pathway both photophysically and in devices. Importantly, donors or acceptors with more than one conformer have negative repercussions for TADF in organic light-emitting diodes. The search for brighter emitting materials is essential to the development of OLED devices. Etherington et al. show how the presence of two regioisomers of a donor-acceptor-donor thermally-activated delayed fluorescence molecule affects the device efficiency, with one acting as a triplet quencher.

Abstract
With 4-fluoro-N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA4F), only a single fluorescence from a locally excited (LE) state is observed, irrespective of solvent polarity, temperature, and excitation wavelength. The relatively small excited state dipole moment μe = 7.3 D confirms the identification as LE. The single exponential fluorescence decays in the nonpolar n-hexane (2.04 ns) and in the strongly polar acetonitrile (5.73 ns) are a further support. Similar results are obtained with 4-chloro-N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA4Cl), having a chlorobenzene subgroup, a somewhat better electron acceptor than the fluorobenzene moiety in DMA4F. The absence of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) with DMA4F is in accord with its large energy gap ΔE(S1,S2) of 8300 cm-1 in n-hexane between the two lowest singlet excited states, which is even larger than that (6300 cm-1) of N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), for which an LE → ICT reaction likewise does not occur. The results with DMA4F are in contradiction with a publication by Fujiwara et al. ( Chem. Phys. Lett. 2013 , 586 , 70 ), in which the appearance of dual LE + ICT emission is reported for DMA4F in n-hexane and MeCN at room temperature. The ICT/LE fluorescence quantum yield ratio Φ'(ICT)/Φ(LE) reached a maximum value of ∼2, in n-hexane and surprisingly also in MeCN, as the excitation wavelength approaches the red-edge of the absorption spectrum. These, in our opinion, erroneous observations were supported by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, which compute a perpendicularly twisted lowest ICT state (TICT) state. This is a further example of the general tendency of computations to find a TICT conformation for the lowest excited singlet state of electron donor/acceptor molecules such as p-substituted anilines.

Abstract
Two light-emitting polyphenylene dendrimers with both hole and electron transporting moieties were synthesized and characterized. Both molecules exhibited pure blue emission solely from the pyrene core and efficient surface-to-core energy transfers when characterized in a nonpolar environment. In particular, the carbazole- and oxadiazole-functionalized dendrimer (D1) manifested a pure blue emission from the pyrene core without showing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in environments with increasing polarity. On the other hand, the triphenylamine- and oxadiazole-functionalized one (D2) displayed notable ICT with dual emission from both the core and an ICT state in highly polar solvents. D1, in a three-layer organic light emitting diode (OLED) by solution processing gave a pure blue emission with Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage 1931 CIE xy = (0.16, 0.12), a peak current efficiency of 0.21 cd/A and a peak luminance of 2700 cd/m2. This represents the first reported pure blue dendrimer emitter with bipolar charge transport and surface-to-core energy transfer in OLEDs.
