Mechanisms of Hydrogen Generation from Tetrameric Clusters of Lithium Amidoborane

Experimental and theoretical evidence of dihydrogen bonds in lithium amidoborane

In situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and complementary first-principles calculations have revealed that structural and spectroscopic properties of lithium amidoborane compound are largely determined by multiple heteropolar dihydrogen bonds. The crystal structure of the compound is stabilized by dimeric complexes, wherein molecular ions bind together by intermolecular dihydrogen bonds of unconventional type. This strong intermolecular coupling determines stable character of the crystal structure in the pressure range up to ~ 30 GPa and is spectroscopically manifested by pronounced changes related to molecular vibrations of the amino group: the splitting of stretching modes, the anomalous behavior of wagging modes as well as Fermi resonance due to vibrational coupling of bending and stretching modes, significantly enhanced above 10 GPa. Unconventional nature of dihydrogen bonds is confirmed by the frequency increase, blueshift, of NH stretching modes with pressure. A role of certain hydrogen mediated interactions in the process of dehydrogenation of ammonia borane and its alkali metal derivatives is speculated. Findings presented here call for reconsideration of hydrogen release mechanism from alkali metal ammonia borane derivatives. The work makes significant contribution towards establishing the general theory of ubiquitous and versatile hydrogen mediated interactions.

Initial steps for the thermal decomposition of alkaline-earth metal amidoboranes: a cluster approximation

A DFT study of thermal decomposition mechanisms of [M(NH₂BH₃)₂]₄ clusters with M = Mg, Ca, and Sr is presented. Multi-step reaction pathways leading to elimination of the first H₂ molecule are explored at the M06/TZVP level of theory. For all studied M, the clusters adopt similar structures and exhibit similar transformations along the reaction pathways. Their activation energies decrease in the order Mg < Ca ≤ Sr. Four metal atoms in the cluster form a rigid planar construction that is found to be nearly unchanged during all transformations. Cleavage of the B-H bond in the environment of alkaline-earth metal atoms leads to the "capture" of the released H atom by neighboring metal atoms with the formation of a M₃H moiety. While the activation energies for the cleavage of H^δ- can be as low as 14.3, 22.6 and 23.3 kcal mol^-1 for M = Mg, Ca and Sr, respectively, barriers for the subsequent cleavage of H^δ+via destruction of the M₃H moiety are about twice larger.

Trimeric cluster of lithium amidoborane-the smallest unit for the modeling of hydrogen release mechanism

A detailed first-principle DFT M06/6-311++G(d.p) study of dehydrogenation mechanism of trimeric cluster of lithium amidoborane is presented. The first step of the reaction is association of two LiNH2 BH3 molecules in the cluster. The dominant feature of the subsequent reaction pathway is activation of H atom of BH3 group by three Li atoms with formation of unique Li3 H moiety. This Li3 H moiety is destroyed prior to dehydrogenation in favor of formation of a triangular Li2 H moiety, which interacts with protic H atom of NH2 group. As a result of this interaction, Li2 H2 moiety is produced. It features N(-) H(+) H(-) group suited near the middle plane between two Li(+) in the transition state that leads to H2 release. The transition states of association and hydrogen release steps are similar in energy. It is concluded that the trimer, (LiNH2 BH3 )3 , is the smallest cluster that captures the essence of the hydrogen release reaction.
