A Dynamics Investigation of the C + CH+ → C2+ + H Reaction on an ab Initio Bond-Order-Like Potential

A General User-Friendly Tool for Kinetic Calculations of Multi-Step Reactions within the Virtual Multifrequency Spectrometer Project

We discuss the implementation of a computer program for accurate calculation of the kinetics of chemical reactions integrated in the user-friendly, multi-purpose Virtual Multifrequency Spectrometer tool. The program is based on the ab initio modeling of the involved molecular species, the adoption of transition-state theory for each elementary step of the reaction, and the use of a master-equation approach accounting for the complete reaction scheme. Some features of the software are illustrated through examples including the interconversion reaction of hydroxyacetone and 2-hydroxypropanal and the production of HCN and HNC from vinyl cyanide.

Chemical promenades: Exploring potential-energy surfaces with immersive virtual reality

The virtual-reality framework AVATAR (Advanced Virtual Approach to Topological Analysis of Reactivity) for the immersive exploration of potential-energy landscapes is presented. AVATAR is based on modern consumer-grade virtual-reality technology and builds on two key concepts: (a) the reduction of the dimensionality of the potential-energy surface to two process-tailored, physically meaningful generalized coordinates, and (b) the analogy between the evolution of a chemical process and a pathway through valleys (potential wells) and mountain passes (saddle points) of the associated potential energy landscape. Examples including the discovery of competitive reaction paths in simple A + BC collisional systems and the interconversion between conformers in ring-puckering motions of flexible rings highlight the innovation potential that augmented and virtual reality convey for teaching, training, and supporting research in chemistry.

Kinetics Of The H + CH2 → CH + H2 Reaction At Low Temperature

A quasiclassical trajectory study of the kinetics of the title astrochemical reaction in a range of temperatures varying from 5 to 1000 K (corresponding to both the outer and the inner regions of the protostar and the circumstellar envelopes) was carried out and a clear dependence of the rate coefficient on the temperature is given, in contrast with the constant value adopted in kinetics astrochemical databases. Levering the massive nature of the performed calculations and of the detailed dynamical investigation of the reactive process, a rationalization of the temperature dependence of the released translational energy and of the rovibrational population of the CH and H₂ diatomic products is also provided. Furthermore, the effect of the initial rovibrational energy of CH₂ on the state-specific rate coefficients and cross sections is analyzed in order to single out the role played by the different regions of the potential energy surface on the dynamical outcomes and on the modeling the temperature dependence of the reactive efficiency of the investigated process. This led to a parametrization of the computed rate in terms of the following double Arrhenius expression (in cm³ s^-1), k(T) = 2.50 × 10^-10 exp(- 1.67/T) + 5.98 × 10^-11 exp(- 280.5/T), alternative to the piecewise formulation into the three subintervals of temperature in which the overall 5-1000 K interval can be divided.

Potential-Energy Surfaces for Ring-Puckering Motions of Flexible Cyclic Molecules through Cremer-Pople Coordinates: Computation, Analysis, and Fitting

Ring-puckering motion in 12 flexible cyclic molecules is investigated by calculation and analysis of two-dimensional potential-energy surfaces (PESs) using the so-called ring-puckering coordinates proposed by Cremer and Pople. The PESs are calculated by means of density-functional theory using a B2PLYP-D3BJ exchange-correlation functional with a maug-cc-pVTZ basis set, and results are compared to the available experimental and theoretical data. Special care is devoted to the aspect of symmetry in such two-dimensional PESs, which are here reported for the first time also for molecules whose planar form has symmetry lower than D_{5 h} or C_{2 v}. The issue of PES fitting and that of solving the nuclear dynamics using ring-puckering coordinates are also addressed. Analytical formulations of the computed PESs using suitable functional forms with a limited set of parameters are provided.
