Matrix Isolation Infrared Spectroscopy of an O–H···π Hydrogen-Bonded Complex between Formic Acid and Benzene

From 'halogen' to 'tetrel' bonds: matrix isolation IR spectroscopic and quantum mechanical studies of the effect of central atom substitution in donor tetrahalogens on binary complex formation with formic acid

Binary complex formation between silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) and formic acid (FA) has been observed in an argon matrix environment. Such complex formation manifests as spectral shifts in signature vibrations of the latter, namely the νCO, νC-O and νO-H vibrations. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the most stable conformers of the complex involve predominantly the tetrel bond, which has been defined in existing literature as a variant of the "σ-hole" interactions. Here, regions of positive electrostatic potential on the tetrahedral face of SiCl4 act as electrophilic centers (σ-hole) to which the nucleophilic carbonyl group of FA is able to bind. Atoms-in-molecules analysis predicts a bond critical point along the non-covalent contact between the tetrel atom Si and the carbonyl oxygen on FA, corroborating the presence of the tetrel bond. The hyperconjugative interaction parameters at the binding interface obtained from Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis are also consistent with such observations. Although apparently similar to SiCl4, there are noticeable differences in the binding preferences of the lower homologue carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The binary complexes of the latter with the same FA acceptor molecule have been previously shown to involve halogen bonded, rather than tetrel bonded interactions (Banerjee and Bhattacharya, Spectrochim. Acta Mol. and Biomol. Spectrosc., 2021, 250, 119355). Such variations in the nature of non-covalent interactions of these tetrahalogens are attributed to differences in the distribution of electronic charge density surrounding the central tetrel atom, as obtained from mappings of their electrostatic potential surfaces. Our combined experimental and theoretical findings therefore provide direct evidence of the growing propensity of tetrel atoms to engage in tetrel bonding as we move lower down Group 14, and re-assert the reluctance of the smaller and more electronegative carbon atom to serve as a tetrel bond participant.

Monomeric and Dimeric Carboxylic Acid in Crystalline Cavities and Channels of Delta and Epsilon Forms of Syndiotactic Polystyrene

Delta (δ) and epsilon (ε) co-crystalline forms of syndiotactic polystyrene with a carboxylic acid guest were obtained by sorption of liquid hexanoic acid in syndiotactic polystyrene films exhibiting delta and epsilon nanoporous-crystalline forms. The characterization study is facilitated by axially stretched syndiotactic polystyrene films, used both for polarized FTIR spectra and for WAXD fiber patterns. Particularly informative are two carbonyl-stretching FTIR peaks, attributed to monomeric and dimeric hexanoic acid. The dichroism of these carbonyl peaks indicates that both delta and epsilon phases are able to include hexanoic acid as isolated guest molecules, while only the epsilon phase is also able to include dimeric hexanoic acid molecules in its crystalline channels. The inclusion of both isolated and dimeric hexanoic acid species in the epsilon form crystalline channels produces extremely fast hexanoic acid uptakes by syndiotactic polystyrene epsilon form films.

Direct matrix isolation IR spectroscopic evidence of halogen bonding from a comparative study of complexes of CBr4 and CCl4with acetone and formic acid

Binary complexes of acetone and formic acid with tetrahalomethanes CBr₄ and CCl₄ have been isolated in argon matrix. Spectral shifts in the characteristic ν_C=O region of acetone, as well as in the fingerprint regions, are unambiguously assigned to the formation of halogen bond involving one of the halogen atoms on CBr₄/CCl₄ as donor, and the carbonyl oxygen of acetone as acceptor. The higher magnitude of shifts of ν_C=O and the fingerprint vibrations for the CBr₄ complex, as compared to the CCl₄ complex, is consistent with theoretical predictions of higher value of positive electrostatic potential in the "σ-hole" region of the former, and hence its higher susceptibility to halogen bonding. The formation of halogen bonded complexes involving formic acid as acceptor and CBr₄/CCl₄ as donors is also being reported for the first time. In this case too, distinct shifts are obtained in the ν_C=O as well as ν_C-O regions of formic acid, which again are significantly larger in magnitude for the CBr₄ complex, as compared to the CCl₄ complex. Electronic structure calculations have been carried out using different theoretical methods to identify the various possible structural isomers of the halogen bonded complexes, and to obtain relevant information regarding their energies and intermolecular geometrical parameters. In addition, NBO and AIM analysis have been carried out to understand the role of local interactions at the halogen bonded interface. Such predicted data are found to be consistent with experimental observations, and re-assert the stronger nature of CBr₄ as halogen bond donor, as compared to CCl₄.

Probing the Endo/Exo Isomeric Variants of a Binary Complex of Cyclopropylamine with p-Fluorophenol by LIF Spectroscopy: A Comparative Study with Ammonia Complex

Conformational isomers of an O-H···N hydrogen-bonded binary complex between para-fluorophenol (pFP) and a nonrigid primary amine base, cyclopropylamine (CPA), have been probed by means of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion. Two closely spaced electronic origin bands have been identified in the measured LIF excitation spectrum, and their assignments have been corroborated by making comparisons with the spectra of the parent pFP-NH₃ complex recorded under the same expansion condition. The observation is consistent with the presence of endo and exo isomeric variants of the complex predicted by electronic structure theory methods, and the endo isomer is stabilized by ∼2 kcal/mol additionally owing to the formation of a C-H···O and a C-H···π type of weak hydrogen bonds between the two moieties. In the fluorescence excitation (FE) spectrum, the low-frequency bands for different intermolecular modes gain substantial intensity, and this spectral feature is in contrast to that of the pFP-NH₃ complex. The Franck-Condon intensity of the bands has been simulated invoking Duschinsky rotation scheme, taking into consideration the ground- and excited-state geometries.

Effects of methylation in acceptors on the hydrogen bond complexes between 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and cyclic ethers

In order to explore the effect of methylation on the stability and spectral shift of hydrogen bond complexes, the complexes of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) with propylene oxide (PO) and isobutylene oxide (IBO) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ab initio computations. The comparable OH-stretching red shifts were observed upon complexation, and an enhancement of the OH-stretching band is shown with the partial pressure of monomers increasing. The OH-stretching frequency of TFE is red shifted by 180 and 201 cm^-1 with PO and IBO, respectively. By using quantum chemical calculations, we predicted the geometric parameters, binding energies, and spectral shifts of TFEPO/IBO hydrogen bond complexes. The calculated and observed spectral shifts follow the same trends. Compared with the TFEethylene oxide (EO) complex, the strength of the hydrogen bond in complex increases with the addition of methyl group, which likely results from the increase in basicity of the hydrogen bond acceptor. By combining the experimental integrated absorbance and the calculated IR intensity of the OH-stretching vibrational transition, the equilibrium constant for the complex formation was determined. In addition, atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were carried out to explain the red shift and the nature of the interaction in these complexes.

Blue- and Red-Shifting Hydrogen Bonding: A Gas Phase FTIR and Ab Initio Study of RR'CO···DCCl3 and RR'S···DCCl3 Complexes

Blue-shifting H-bonded (C-D···O) complexes between CDCl₃ and CH₃HCO, (CH₃)₂CO, and C₂H₅(CH₃)CO, and red-shifting H-bonded (C-D···S) complexes between CDCl₃ with (CH₃)₂S and (C₂H₅)₂S have been identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the gas phase at room temperature. With increasing partial pressure of the components, a new band appears in the C-D stretching region of the vibrational spectra. The intensity of this band decreases with an increase in temperature at constant pressure, which provides the basis for identification of the H-bonded bands in the spectrum. The C-D stretching frequency of CDCl₃ is blue-shifted by +7.1, +4, and +3.2 cm^-1 upon complexation with CH₃HCO, (CH₃)₂CO, and C₂H₅(CH₃)CO, respectively, and red-shifted by -14 and -19.2 cm^-1 upon complexation with (CH₃)₂S and (C₂H₅)₂S, respectively. By using quantum chemical calculations at the MP2/6-311++G** level, we predict the geometry, electronic structural parameters, binding energy, and spectral shift of H-bonded complexes between CDCl₃ and two series of compounds named RCOR' (H₂CO, CH₃HCO, (CH₃)₂CO, and C₂H₅(CH₃)CO) and RSR' (H₂S, CH₃HS, (CH₃)₂S, and (C₂H₅)₂S) series. The calculated and observed spectral shifts follow the same trends. With an increase in basicity of the H-bond acceptor, the C-D bond length increases, force constant decreases, and the frequency shifts to the red from the blue. The potential energy scans of the above complexes are done, which show that electrostatic attraction between electropositive D and electron-rich O/S causes bond elongation and red shift, and the electronic and nuclear repulsions lead to bond contraction and blue shifts. The dominance of the two opposing forces at the equilibrium geometry of the complex determines the nature of the shift, which changes both in magnitude and in direction with the basicity of the hydrogen-bond acceptor.

Antagonistic Interplay Between an Intermolecular CH···O and an Intramolecular OH···O Hydrogen Bond in a 1:1 Complex Between 1,2-Cyclohexanedione and Chloroform: A Combined Matrix Isolation Infrared and Quantum Chemistry Study

Matrix isolation infrared spectra of a weak C-H···O hydrogen-bonded complex between the keto-enol form of 1,2-cyclohexanedione (HCHD) and chloroform have been measured. The spectra reveal that the intramolecular O-H···O H-bond of HCHD is weakened as a result of complex formation, manifesting in prominent blue shift (∼23 cm^-1) of the ν_O-H band and red shifts (∼7 cm^-1) of ν_C═O bands of the acceptor (HCHD). The ν_C-H band of donor CHCl₃ undergoes a large red shift of ∼33 cm^-1. Very similar spectral effects are also observed for formation of the complex in CCl₄ solution at room temperature. Our analysis reveals that out of several possible iso-energetic conformational forms of the complex, the one involving antagonistic interplay between the two hydrogen bonds (intermolecular C-H···O and intramolecular O-H···O) is preferred. The combined experimental and calculated data presented here suggest that in condensed media, conformational preferences are guided by directional hyperconjugative charge transfer interactions at the C-H···O hydrogen bonding site of the complex.

The borazine dimer: the case of a dihydrogen bond competing with a classical hydrogen bond

Dimers of borazine were studied using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Computations were performed at the MP2 and M06-2X levels of theory using the 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets for the various homodimers. At both levels of theory, an aligned stacked structure was found to be the global minimum, which was nearly isoenergetic to a parallel displaced structure. A T-shaped structure, where the N-H of one borazine pointed towards the N of the second borazine, was found to be a local minimum. In addition to these structures, a dihydrogen bonded structure, where the hydrogen attached to the nitrogen of borazine interacted with the hydrogen attached to the boron atom of another borazine, was also indicated. Experimentally, we observed the T-shaped dimer and the dihydrogen bonded dimer. This is one of the rare examples of experimental evidence for a dihydrogen bond, in a system other than in a metal hydride. These results for the borazine dimer were clearly different from the benzene dimer where the parallel displaced structure was found to be the global minimum followed by the T-shaped structure at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. AIM, EDA and NBO analyses were carried out for all the structures to explore the nature of interactions.

Cooperative effect on phenolic νO-H frequencies in 1:1 hydrogen bonded complexes of o-fluorophenols with water: A matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic study

Matrix isolation infrared spectra of 1:1 complexes of two ortho-fluorophenols, 2-fluorophenol (2-FPh) and 2,6-difluorophenol (2,6-DFPh), with water and benzene have been analyzed in combination with electronic structure calculations to investigate cooperative effect in O-H···O-H···F hydrogen bonded linkage, which manifests as large spectral shifts of the phenolic O-H stretching fundamental. Calculation predicts that a nearly planar cyclic geometry is preferred by the binary water complexes of the syn conformer of 2-FPh as well as 2,6-DFPh, and the observed spectral shifts are in good agreement with the predicted shifts for such conformers. On the other hand, for other possible isomeric structures, the molecular plane of water moiety is oriented perpendicular to that of the fluorophenols, and the observed as well as predicted shifts are smaller than those of the ortho substituted fluorophenols, although the total binding energies are predicted to be larger for the former. The observed spectral shifts are however consistent with local interaction energy parameters, like hyperconjugative charge transfer and accumulation of electron density (ρ) along the O-H···O hydrogen bond path. For the binary O-H···π hydrogen bonded benzene complexes of the fluorophenols, where cooperative interaction is not possible, the observed shifts are consistent with the conformers preferred according to total binding energies as well as local charge transfer effects of the complexes.
