Atmospheric Intermediates at the Air-Water Interface

The air-water interface (AWI) is a ubiquitous reaction field different from the bulk phase where unexpected reactions and physical processes often occur. The AWI is a region where air contacts cloud droplets, aerosol particles, the ocean surface, and biological surfaces such as fluids that line human epithelia. In Earth's atmosphere, short-lived intermediates are expected to be generated at the AWI during multiphase reactions. Recent experimental developments have enabled the direct detection of atmospherically relevant, short-lived intermediates at the AWI. For example, spray ionization mass spectrometric analysis of water microjets exposed to a gaseous mixture of ozone and water vapor combined with a 266 nm laser flash photolysis system (LFP-SIMS) has been used to directly probe organic peroxyl radicals (RO2·) produced by interfacial hydroxyl radicals (OH·) + organic compound reactions. OH· emitted immediately after the laser flash photolysis of carboxylic acid at the gas-liquid interface have been directly detected by time-resolved, laser-induced florescence techniques that can be used to study atmospheric multiphase photoreactions. In this Featured Article, we show some recent experimental advances in the detection of atmospherically important intermediates at the AWI and the associated reaction mechanisms. We also discuss current challenges and future prospects for atmospheric multiphase chemistry.

An antioxidation strategy based on ultra-small nanobubbles without exogenous antioxidants

Antioxidation is in demand in living systems, as the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in organisms lead to a variety of diseases. The conventional antioxidation strategies are mostly based on the introduction of exogenous antioxidants. However, antioxidants usually have shortcomings of poor stability, non-sustainability, and potential toxicity. Here, we proposed a novel antioxidation strategy based on ultra-small nanobubbles (NBs), in which the gas-liquid interface was employed to enrich and scavenge ROS. It was found that the ultra-small NBs (~ 10 nm) exhibited a strong inhibition on oxidization of extensive substrates by hydroxyl radicals, while the normal NBs (~ 100 nm) worked only for some substrates. Since the gas-water interface of the ultra-small NBs is non-expendable, its antioxidation would be sustainable and its effect be cumulative, which is different to that using reactive nanobubbles to eliminate free radicals as the gases are consumptive and the reaction is unsustainable. Therefore, our antioxidation strategy based on ultra-small NB would provide a new solution for antioxidation in bioscience as well as other fields such as materials, chemical industry, food industry, etc.

Stability of Terpenoid-Derived Secondary Ozonides in Aqueous Organic Media

1,2,4-Trioxolanes, known as secondary ozonides (SOZs), are key products of ozonolysis of biogenic terpenoids. Functionalized terpenoid-derived SOZs are readily taken up into atmospheric aerosols; however, their condensed-phase fates remain unknown. Here, we report the results of a time-dependent mass spectrometric investigation into the liquid-phase fates of C₁₀ and C₁₃ SOZs synthesized by ozonolysis of a C₁₀ monoterpene alcohol (α-terpineol) in water:acetone (1:1 = vol:vol) mixtures. Isomerization of Criegee intermediates and bimolecular reaction of Criegee intermediates with acetone produced C₁₀ and C₁₃ SOZs, respectively, which were detected as their Na⁺-adducts by positive-ion electrospray mass spectrometry. Use of CD₃COCD₃, D₂O, and H₂¹⁸O solvents enabled identification of three types of C₁₃ SOZs (aldehyde, ketone, and lactol) and other products. These SOZs were surprisingly stable in water:acetone (1:1) mixtures at T = 298 K, with some persisting for at least a week. Theoretical calculations supported the high stability of the lactol-type C₁₃ SOZ formed from the aldehyde-type C₁₃ SOZ via intramolecular rearrangement. The present results suggest that terpenoid-derived SOZs can persist in atmospheric condensed phases, potentially until they are delivered to the epithelial lining fluid of the pulmonary alveoli via inhaled particulate matter, where they may exert hitherto unrecognized adverse health effects.

Electrification of water interface

The surface charge of a water interface determines many fundamental processes in physical chemistry and interface science, and it has been intensively studied for over a hundred years. We summarize experimental methods to characterize the surface charge densities developed so far: electrokinetics, double-layer force measurements, potentiometric titration, surface-sensitive nonlinear spectroscopy, and surface-sensitive mass spectrometry. Then, we elucidate physical ion adsorption and chemical electrification as examples of electrification mechanisms. In the end, novel effects on surface electrification are discussed in detail. We believe that this clear overview of state of the art in a charged water interface will surely help the fundamental progress of physics and chemistry at interfaces in the future.

Aqueous-phase fates of α-alkoxyalkyl-hydroperoxides derived from the reactions of Criegee intermediates with alcohols

In the atmosphere, carbonyl oxides known as Criegee intermediates are produced mainly by ozonolysis of volatile organic compounds containing C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bonds, such as biogenic terpenoids. Criegee intermediates can react with OH-containing species to produce labile organic hydroperoxides (ROOHs) that are taken up into atmospheric condensed phases. Besides water, alcohols are an important reaction partner of Criegee intermediates and can convert them into α-alkoxyalkyl-hydroperoxides (α-AHs), R1R2C(-OOH)(-OR'). Here, we report a study on the aqueous-phase fates of α-AHs derived from ozonolysis of α-terpineol in the presence of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol. The α-terpineol α-AHs and the decomposition products were detected as their chloride adducts by electrospray mass spectrometry as a function of reaction time. Our discovery that the rate of decomposition of α-AHs increased as the pH decreased from 5.9 to 3.8 implied that the decomposition mechanism was catalyzed by H+. The use of isotope solvent experiments revealed that a primary decomposition product of α-AHs in an acidic aqueous solution was a hemiacetal R1R2C(-OH)(-OR') species that was further transformed into other products such as lactols. The proposed H+-catalyzed decomposition of α-AHs, which provides H2O2 and multifunctional species in ambient aerosol particles, may be faster than other degradation processes (e.g., photolysis by solar radiation).

Interfacial Water Mediates Oligomerization Pathways of Monoterpene Carbocations

The air-water interface plays central roles in "on-droplet" synthesis, living systems, and the atmosphere; however, what makes reactions at the interface specific is largely unknown. Here, we examined carbocationic reactions of monoterpene (C₁₀H₁₆ isomer) on an acidic water microjet by using spray ionization mass spectrometry. Gaseous monoterpenes are trapped in the uppermost layers of a water surface via proton transfer and then undergo a chain-propagation reaction. The oligomerization pathway of β-pinene (β-P), which showed prompt chain-propagation, is examined by simultaneous exposure to camphene (CMP). (CMP)H⁺ is the most stable isomer formed via rearrangement of (β-P)H⁺ in the gas phase; however, no co-oligomerization was observed. This indicates that the oligomerization of (β-P)H⁺ proceeded via ring-opening isomerization. Quantum chemical calculations for [carbocation-(H₂O)_n=1,2] complexes revealed that the ring-opened isomer is stabilized by hydrogen-π bonds. We propose that partial hydration is a key factor that makes the interfacial reaction unique.

Effects of pH on Interfacial Ozonolysis of α-Terpineol

Acidity changes the physical properties of atmospheric aerosol particles and the mechanisms of reactions that occur therein and on the surface. Here, we used surface-sensitive pneumatic ionization mass spectrometry to investigate the effects of pH on the heterogeneous reactions of aqueous α-terpineol (C₁₀H₁₇OH), a representative monoterpene alcohol, with gaseous ozone. Rapid (≤10 μs) ozonolysis of α-terpineol produced Criegee intermediates (CIs, zwitterionic/diradical carbonyl oxides) on the surface of water microjets. We studied the effects of microjet bulk pH (1-11) on the formation of functionalized carboxylate and α-hydroxy-hydroperoxide chloride adduct (HH-Cl^-) products generated by isomerization and hydration of α-terpineol CIs, respectively. Compared with the signal at pH ≈ 6, the mass spectral signal of HH-Cl^- was less intense under both basic and more acidic conditions, whereas the intensity of the functionalized carboxylate signal increased with increasing pH up to 4 and then remained constant. The decrease of HH-Cl^- signals at bulk pH values of >6 is attributable to the accumulation of OH^- at the air-water interface that suppresses the relative abundance of hydrophilic HH and Cl^-. The present study suggests that α-terpineol in ambient aqueous organic aerosols will be converted into much lower volatile and potentially toxic organic hydroperoxides during the heterogeneous ozonolysis.

Interfacial vs Bulk Ozonolysis of Nerolidol

Ozone readily reacts with olefins with the formation of more reactive Criegee intermediates (CIs). The transient CIs impact HO _x cycles, and they play a role in new particle formation in the troposphere. Oxidation by O₃ occurs both in the gas-phase, in the liquid phase, and at air-water and air-aerosol interfaces. In light of the importance of O₃ in environmental and engineered chemical transformations, we have investigated the ozonolysis mechanisms of a triolefin C₁₅-alcohol, nerolidol (Nero, a biogenic sesquiterpene), at the air-water interface in the presence of acetonitrile. Surface-sensitive pneumatic ionization mass spectrometric detection of α-hydroxy-hydroperoxides and functionalized carboxylates, generated by the hydration and isomerization of CIs, respectively, enables us to evaluate the relative reactivity of each C=C toward O₃. In addition, we compare bulk-phase ozonolysis chemistry to similar reactions taking place at the air-water interface. Our experimental results show that O₃ reacts primarily with the (CH₃)₂C=CH- and -(CH₃)C=CH- moieties (>∼98%), while the O₃ attack on the terminal -HC=CH₂ site (<∼2%) is a minor pathway during both interfacial and bulk ozonolysis. The presence of functionalized-carboxylates on interfaces but not in bulk-phase reactions with O₃ indicates that the isomerization of the CIs is not hindered at the air-water interface due to the lower availability of water .

Detecting Intermediates and Products of Fast Heterogeneous Reactions on Liquid Surfaces via Online Mass Spectrometry

One of the research priorities in atmospheric chemistry is to advance our understanding of heterogeneous reactions and their effect on the composition of the troposphere. Chemistry on aqueous surfaces is particularly important because of their ubiquity and expanse. They range from the surfaces of oceans (360 million km2), cloud and aerosol drops (estimated at ~10 trillion km2) to the fluid lining the human lung (~150 m2). Typically, ambient air contains reactive gases that may affect human health, influence climate and participate in biogeochemical cycles. Despite their importance, atmospheric reactions between gases and solutes on aqueous surfaces are not well understood and, as a result, generally overlooked. New, surface-specific techniques are required that detect and identify the intermediates and products of such reactions as they happen on liquids. This is a tall order because genuine interfacial reactions are faster than mass diffusion into bulk liquids, and may produce novel species in low concentrations. Herein, we review evidence that validates online pneumatic ionization mass spectrometry of liquid microjets exposed to reactive gases as a technique that meets such requirements. Next, we call attention to results obtained by this approach on reactions of gas-phase ozone, nitrogen dioxide and hydroxyl radicals with various solutes on aqueous surfaces. The overarching conclusion is that the outermost layers of aqueous solutions are unique media, where most equilibria shift and reactions usually proceed along new pathways, and generally faster than in bulk water. That the rates and mechanisms of reactions at air-aqueous interfaces may be different from those in bulk water opens new conceptual frameworks and lines of research, and adds a missing dimension to atmospheric chemistry.

Chemical signatures of surface microheterogeneity on liquid mixtures

Many chemical reactions in Nature, the laboratory, and chemical industry occur in solvent mixtures that bring together species of dissimilar solubilities. Solvent mixtures are visually homogeneous, but are not randomly mixed at the molecular scale. In the all-important binary water-hydrotrope mixtures, small-angle neutron and dynamic light scattering experiments reveal the existence of short-lived (<50 ps), short-ranged (∼1 nm) concentration fluctuations. The presence of hydrophobic solutes stabilizes and extends such fluctuations into persistent, mesoscopic (10-100 nm) inhomogeneities. While the existence of inhomogeneities is well established, their impacts on reactivity are not fully understood. Here, we search for chemical signatures of inhomogeneities on the surfaces of W:X mixtures (W = water; X = acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, or 1,4-dioxane) by studying the reactions of Criegee intermediates (CIs) generated in situ from O₃(g) addition to a hydrophobic olefin (OL) solute. Once formed, CIs isomerize to functionalized carboxylic acids (FC) or add water to produce α-hydroxy-hydroperoxides (HH), as detected by surface-specific, online pneumatic ionization mass spectrometry. Since only the formation of HH requires the presence of water, the dependence of the R = HH/FC ratio on water molar fraction x w expresses the accessibility of water to CIs on the surfaces of mixtures. The finding that R increases quasi-exponentially with x w in all solvent mixtures is consistent with CIs being preferentially produced (from their OL hydrophobic precursor) in X-rich, long-lived OL:X _m W _n interfacial clusters, rather than randomly dispersed on W:X surfaces. R vs x w dependences therefore reflect the average ⟨m, n⟩ composition of OL:X _m W _n interfacial clusters, as weighted by cluster reorganization dynamics. Water in large, rigid clusters could be less accessible to CIs than in smaller but more flexible clusters of lower water content. Since mesoscale inhomogeneities are intrinsic to most solvent mixtures, these phenomena should be quite general.

OH-Radical Oxidation of Lung Surfactant Protein B on Aqueous Surfaces

Air pollutants generate reactive oxygen species on lung surfaces. Here we report how hydroxyl radicals (·OH) injected on the surface of water react with SP-B_1-25, a 25-residue polypeptide surrogate of human lung surfactant protein B. Our experiments consist of intersecting microjets of aqueous SP-B_1-25 solutions with O₃/O₂/H₂O/N₂(g) gas streams that are photolyzed into ·OH(g) in situ by 266 nm laser nanosecond pulses. Surface-sensitive mass spectrometry enables us to monitor the prompt (<10 μs) and simultaneous formation of primary O _n -containing products/intermediates (n≤5) triggered by the reaction of ·OH with interfacial SP-B_1-25. We found that O-atoms from both O₃ and ·OH are incorporated into the reactive cysteine Cys₈ and Cys₁₁ and tryptophan Trp₉ components of the hydrophobic N-terminus of SP-B_1-25 that lies at the topmost layers of the air-liquid interface. Remarkably, these processes are initiated by ·OH additions rather than by H-atom abstractions from S-H, C-H, or N-H groups. By increasing the hydrophilicity of the N-terminus region of SP-B_1-25, these transformations will impair its role as a surfactant.

Enhanced Acidity of Acetic and Pyruvic Acids on the Surface of Water

Understanding the acid-base behavior of carboxylic acids on aqueous interfaces is a fundamental issue in nature. Surface processes involving carboxylic acids such as acetic and pyruvic acids play roles in (1) the transport of nutrients through cell membranes, (2) the cycling of metabolites relevant to the origin of life, and (3) the photooxidative processing of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions in aerosols and atmospheric waters. Here, we report that 50% of gaseous acetic acid and pyruvic acid molecules transfer a proton to the surface of water at pH 2.8 and 1.8 units lower than their respective acidity constants p K_a = 4.6 and 2.4 in bulk water. These findings provide key insights into the relative Bronsted acidities of common carboxylic acids versus interfacial water. In addition, the work estimates the reactive uptake coefficient of gaseous pyruvic acid by water to be γ_PA = 0.06. This work is useful to interpret the interfacial behavior of pyruvic acid under low water activity conditions, typically found in haze aerosols, clouds, and fog waters.

Controlling factors of oligomerization at the water surface: why is isoprene such a unique VOC?

The interfacial oligomerization of isoprene is facilitated by the resonance stabilization through the formation of a tertiary carbocation with a conjugated CC bond pair, and electron enrichment induced by the neighboring methyl group.

Criegee Intermediates React with Levoglucosan on Water

Levoglucosan (Levo), a C₆-anhydrosaccharide produced in the combustion of cellulosic materials, is the major component of aerosols produced from biomass burning over vast regions worldwide. Levo has long been considered chemically inert and thus has been used as a tracer of biomass burning sources. However, we now show that sugars including Levo, glucose, arabitol, and mannitol react rapidly with Criegee intermediates (CIs) generated during the ozonolysis of sesquiterpenes on the surface of water:acetonitrile microjets. Hydrophilic Levo reacts faster with CIs than with water or surface-active 1-octanol at air-aqueous interfaces. This unexpected phenomenon is likely associated with the relatively low water density at air-aqueous interfaces coupled with a higher gas-phase acidity of the saccharide hydroxyl groups (i.e., -OH) versus n-alkanols. Results presented herein show that aerosol saccharides are in fact reactive toward CIs. Given the abundance of saccharides in the atmosphere, they may be important contributors to the growth and mass loading of secondary organic aerosols.

Reactions of Criegee Intermediates with Alcohols at Air-Aqueous Interfaces

The fate of Criegee intermediates (CIs) from the gas-phase ozonolysis of unsaturated organic compounds in the troposphere is largely controlled by their reactions with water vapor. We recently found that against all expectations carboxylic acids compete at millimolar concentrations with water for CIs at the air-liquid interface of aqueous organic media. This outcome is consistent with both the low water concentration in the outermost interfacial layers and the enrichment of the competing acids therein. Here we show, via online electrospray mass spectrometric detection, that CIs generated in situ in the fast ozonolysis of sesquiterpenes (C₁₅H₂₄) on the surface of water:acetonitrile microjets react with n ≥ 4 linear alcohols C_nH_2n+1OH to produce high molecular weight C_15+n ethers in one step. The OH group of 1-octanol proved to be ∼25 times less reactive than that of n-octanoic toward CIs at the same bulk molar concentration, revealing that the reactivity of hydroxylic species depends on both acidities and interfacial affinities. CI interfacial reactions with surface-active hydroxylic species, by bypassing water, represent shortcuts to molecular complexity in atmospheric aerosols.

Criegee Chemistry on Aqueous Organic Surfaces

In the troposphere, the fate of gas-phase Criegee intermediates (CIs) is deemed to be determined by their reactions with water molecules. Here it is shown that CIs produced in situ on the surface of water/acetonitrile (W/AN) solutions react competitively with millimolar carboxylic acids. Present experiments probe, via online electrospray mass spectrometry, CIs' chemistry on the surface of α-humulene and β-caryophyllene in W/AN microjets exposed to O₃(g) for <10 μs. Mass-specific identification lets us establish the progeny of products and intermediates generated in the early stages of CIs' reactions with H₂O, D₂O, H₂¹⁸O, and n-alkyl-COOH (n = 1-7). It is found that n-alkyl-COOH competes for CIs with interfacial water, their competitiveness being an increasing function of n. Present findings demonstrate that CIs can react with species other than H₂O on the surface of aqueous organic aerosols due to the low water concentrations prevalent in the outermost interfacial layers.

Efficient scavenging of Criegee intermediates on water by surface-active cis-pinonic acid

Criegee intermediates efficiently react with surface-active cis-pinonic acid rather than linear alkyl organic acids of similar size, or interfacial water molecules at air-aqueous interfaces.
