Phase-Resolved Heterodyne-Detected Transient Grating Enhances the Capabilities of 2D IR Echo Spectroscopy

BoxCARS 2D IR spectroscopy with pulse shaping

BoxCARS and pump-probe geometries are common implementations of two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy. BoxCARS is background-free, generally offering greater signal-to-noise ratio, which enables measuring weak vibrational echo signals. Pulse shapers have been implemented in the pump-probe geometry to accelerate data collection and suppress scatter and other unwanted signals by precise control of the pump-pulse delay and carrier phase. Here, we introduce a 2D-IR optical setup in the BoxCARS geometry that implements a pulse shaper for rapid acquisition of background-free 2D IR spectra. We show a signal-to-noise improvement using this new fast-scan BoxCARS setup versus the pump-probe geometry within the same configuration.

Leveraging scatter in two-dimensional spectroscopy: passive phase drift correction enables a global phasing protocol

Phase stability between pulse pairs defining Fourier-transform time delays can limit resolution and complicates development and adoption of multidimensional coherent spectroscopies. We demonstrate a data processing procedure to correct the long-term phase drift of the nonlinear signal during two-dimensional (2D) experiments based on the relative phase between scattered excitation pulses and a global phasing procedure to generate fully absorptive 2D electronic spectra of wafer-scale monolayer MoS₂. Our correction results in a ∼30-fold increase in effective long-term signal phase stability, from ∼λ/2 to ∼λ/70 with negligible extra experimental time and no additional optical components. This scatter-based drift correction should be applicable to other interferometric techniques as well, significantly lowering the practical experimental requirements for this class of measurements.

Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy Reveals Cosolvent-Composition-Dependent Crossover in Intermolecular Hydrogen-Bond Dynamics

Cosolvents have versatile composition-dependent applications in chemistry and biology. The simultaneous presence of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), an industrially important amphiphilic cosolvent, when combined with the unique properties of water, plays key roles in the diverse fields of pharmacology, cryoprotection, and cell biology. Moreover, molecules dissolved in aqueous DMSO exhibit an anomalous concentration-dependent nonmonotonic behavior in stability and activity near a critical DMSO mole fraction of 0.15. An experimental identification of the origin of this anomaly can lead to newer chemical and biological applications. We report a direct spectroscopic observation of the anomalous behavior using ultrafast two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy experiments. Our results demonstrate the cosolvent-concentration-dependent nonmonotonicity arises from nonidentical mechanisms in ultrafast hydrogen-bond-exchange dynamics of water above and below the critical cosolvent concentration. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results provides a molecular-level mechanistic understanding: a distinct difference in the stabilization of the solute through dynamic solute-solvent interactions is the key to the anomalous behavior.
