An Exprimental and Computational Study on the Cl Atom Initiated Photo-Oxidization Reactions of Butenes in the Gas Phase

Kinetics of the Reactions of Chlorinated Very Short-Lived Substances (VSLSs) with Chlorine Atoms

Chlorinated very short-lived substances (VSLSs), which are not controlled by the Montreal Protocol, are of current concern with regard to recovery of stratospheric ozone. Further study is needed on the temperature dependences of chlorinated VSLSs relevant to atmospheric conditions. Here, the kinetics of chlorinated VSLSs, such as chloroform (CHCl3), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), dichloroethane (CH2ClCH2Cl), and trichloroethene (C2HCl3) reacting with chlorine atoms, were investigated between 180 and 400 K, expanding the range of temperatures relative to previous studies. RRKM/Master Equation and Canonical Variational Transition State Theory were utilized to calculate the rate coefficients using the MultiWell suite of programs. CCSD(T), QCISD(T), and M062X with aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z levels of theory were used to calculate the kinetic parameters. Arrhenius equations obtained from fits to the calculated rate coefficients are k1 = (2.66 ± 0.7) × 10-12 exp [(-927 ± 131)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1, k2 = (8.99 ± 0.3) × 10-12 exp [(-957 ± 19)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1, k3 = (1.51 ± 0.16) × 10-11 exp [(-714 ± 54)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1, and k4 = (9.17 ± 1.8) × 10-12 exp [(612 ± 101)/T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for the reactions of CHCl3, CH2Cl2, CH2ClCH2Cl, and C2HCl3 with Cl atoms, respectively. The rate coefficients for the reactions of chlorinated VSLSs with Cl atoms from this study are compared with the most recent recommended values from the NASA/JPL and IUPAC evaluations and with literature values. The reactivity trends of the reactions are discussed.

Investigation into reactions of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate with chlorine atom

Reactions between chlorine and unsaturated esters in gas phase are examined in a slow-flow reaction tube inside the laboratory-built photoionization mass spectrometer at the energy range of 8-11 eV. 248 nm laser radiation is used to initiate the reaction. Products are distinguished, C₅H₈O₂Cl for addition, and C₅H₇O₂, C₅H₇O₂Cl and C₅H₉O₂Cl for abstraction. The direct or indirect products are detected, indicating secondary reactions. And experimental ionization potentials are procured for direct adducts of methyl methacrylate to be 8.30 eV and for that of ethyl acrylate to be 9.95 eV which are well consistent with theoretical ionization potentials of likely isomers. Theoretical reaction channels are also accounted for, optimized under M06-2X/6-31 + G(d,p) level and ionization potentials of products are calculated under M06-2X/6-31 + G(d,p) level also. Differences between experimental and theoretical details are discussed.

Keto-ether and glycol-ethers in the troposphere: reactivity toward OH radicals and Cl atoms, global lifetimes, and atmospheric implications

Rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of OH radicals and Cl atoms with 1-methoxy-2-propanone (1-M-2-PONE), 1-methoxy-2-propanol (1-M-2-POL), and 1-methoxy-2-butanol (1-M-2-BOL) were determined at room temperature and atmospheric pressure using a conventional relative-rate technique. The following absolute rate coefficients were derived: k ₁(OH + 1-M-2-PONE) = (0.64 ± 0.13) × 10^-11, k ₂(OH + 1-M-2-BOL) = (2.19 ± 0.23) × 10^-11, k ₃(Cl + 1-M-2-PONE = (1.07 ± 0.24) × 10^-10, k ₄(Cl + 1-M-2-POL) = (2.28 ± 0.21) × 10^-10, and k ₅ (Cl + 1-M-2-BOL) = (2.79 ± 0.23) × 10^-10, in units of cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1. This is the first experimental determination of k ₂-k ₅. These rate coefficients were used to discuss the influence of the structure on the reactivity of the studied polyfunctional organic compounds. The atmospheric implications for 1-M-2-PONE, 1-M-2-POL, and 1-M-2-BOL and their reactions were investigated estimating atmospheric parameters such as lifetimes, global warming potentials, and average photochemical ozone production. The approximate nature of these values was stressed considering that the studied oxygenated volatile organic compounds are short-lived compounds for which the calculated parameters may vary depending on chemical composition, location, and season at the emission points.
