Durable Nanocellulose-Stabilized Emulsions of Dithizone/Chloroform in Water for Hg2+ Detection: A Novel Approach for a Classical Problem

The use of dithizone (DTZ) for colorimetric heavy-metal detection is approximately one century old. However, its pending stability issues and the need for simple indicators justify further research. Using cellulose nanofibers, we attained DTZ-containing emulsions with high stability. These emulsions had water (at least 95 wt %) and acetic acid (1-8 mL/L) conforming the continuous phase, while dispersed droplets of diameter <1 μm contained chloroform-solvated DTZ (3 wt %). The solvation cluster was computed by molecular dynamics simulations, suggesting that chloroform slightly reduces the dihedral angle between the two sides of the thiocarbazone chain. Nanocellulose concentrations over 0.2 wt % sufficed to obtain macroscopically homogeneous mixtures with no phase separation. Furthermore, the rate of degradation of DTZ in the nanocellulose-stabilized emulsion did not differ significantly from a DTZ/chloroform solution, outperforming DTZ/toluene and DTZ/acetonitrile. Not only is the emulsion readily and immediately responsive to mercury(II), but it also decreases interferences from other ions and from natural samples. Unexpectedly, neither lead(II) nor cadmium(II) triggered a visual response at trace concentrations. The limit of detection of these emulsions is 15 μM or 3 mg/L, exceeding WHO limits for mercury(II) in drinking water, but they could be effective at raising alarms.

Environmental monitoring of trace metal pollutants using cellulosic-paper incorporating color change of azo-chromophore

An essential requirement for colorimetric paper-sensor is to allow the target analytes (heavy metal ions) to access the chromophore while maintaining strong chromophore immobilization on the porous substrate surface. This work evaluates the selection of sensitive chromophores (dithizone, 1-(2-pyridylazo) 2-naphthol and 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol) and their immobilization strategies on paper sensors. Dithizone (DTz) are capable of producing a significant color transition at unadjusted pH, observed by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and visible recognition. After immobilizing DTz on a paper substrate (cellulose acetate/chitosan substrate), the DTz-paper sensor showed a distinctive color change from blue-green to peach-pink upon reaction with Pb²⁺ ions, and the color intensity was proportional to the metal concentration. Quantitative analysis using RGB (R:Red; G:Green; B:Blue) plots showed that increasing DTz concentration on the CA/CS paper sensor increases the difference in total color intensity (∆I_T) and the difference in red code intensity (∆I_R). This is due to the formation of more DTz-Pb²⁺ complexes on the CA/CS paper substrate. The CA/CS paper strips immobilized with 100 ppm DTz showed practical potential for rapid detection of heavy metal ions. The DTz-CA/CS paper sensor showed significant color change when detecting spiked heavy metals ions (0.1 ppm Pb²⁺, 2.0 ppm Zn²⁺, and 0.2 ppm Cu²⁺) in river water samples that prepared at the maximum permissible limit for industrial effluent in Malaysia.

A simple and robust method for radiochemical separation of no-carrier-added 64Cu produced in a research reactor for radiopharmaceutical preparation

Copper-64 is an excellent theranostic radiometal that is gaining renewed attention of the clinical community in the recent times. In order to meet the increasing demand of this radiometal, we have demonstrated the viability of its production via ⁶⁴Zn (n,p) ⁶⁴Cu reaction in a nuclear reactor. A semi-automated radiochemical separation module based on selective extraction of ⁶⁴Cu as dithizonate complex was developed. The maximum available activity at the end of irradiation was ~ 700 MBq. The overall yield of ⁶⁴Cu after the separation process was >85% and it could be obtained with ~12 GBq/μg specific activity, >99.9% radionuclidic purity and >98% radiochemical purity. The separated ⁶⁴Cu could be utilized for preparation of a wide variety of radiopharmaceuticals.

Innovative and practical deep eutectic solvent based vortex assisted microextraction procedure for separation and preconcentration of low levels of arsenic and antimony from sample matrix prior to analysis by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry

Considering the negative impacts on human health and the environment, determinations of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb), is of unquestionable importance. The present study describes the development of innovative and practical deep eutectic solvent (DES) based vortex assisted microextraction (DES-VAME) method for preconcentration of As and Sb from environmental waters, honey and rice prior to analysis by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). The use of As(III) and Sb(III) in presence of dithizone at pH 10.5 by means of donor-acceptor mechanism were decided as analytes. Total As and Sb were determined after reduction process. The analytical properties obtained following optimization were as follows. Limit of detection (LOD), precision (as RSD%), recoveries and enhancement factor for As and Sb were calculated as 7.5 ng L^-1/15.6 ng L^-1, 2.1% /2.7%, 93.5%/96.2% and 104/85, respectively. Following validation with certified reference material, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of real samples.
