The impact of π-π stacking interactions on photo-physical properties of hydroxyanthraquinones

The impact of π-π stacking interactions on photo-physical properties of hydroxyanthraquinone (HA) has been investigated using the density functional (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations in the gas phase and solution media. The vertical transition is characterized with strong HOMO-LUMO transition in the complexes. The intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) made in the HA and π-π complexes is strengthened after S₀ → S₁ excitation, such that the proton transfers is facilitated in the first excited state. The complexes exhibit an exothermic excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in the solution media, which is a barrierless process for some complexes. The π-π stacking interaction affects the absorption and emission bands of HA, and provides a large Stokes shift. This indicates the desirable fluorescence properties of π-π complexes, which are cross-validated by geometries, potential energy curve scannings, electronic and vibrational spectra, and frontier molecular orbital analyses.

Surface-Radical Mobility Test by Self-Sorted Recombination: Symmetrical Product upon Recombination (SPR)

We describe here a study of the mobility of the alkoxy radical on a surface by detection of its recombination product. A novel method called symmetrical product recombination (SRP) uses an unsymmetrical peroxide that upon sensitized homolysis recombines to a symmetrical product [R'OOR → R'O^•↑ + ^•OR → ROOR]. This allows for self-sorting of the radical to enhance the recombination path to a symmetrical product, which has been used to deduce surface migratory aptitude. SPR also provides a new opportunity for mechanistic studies of interfacial radicals, including monitoring competition between radical recombination versus surface hydrogen abstraction. This is an approach that might work for other surface-borne radicals on natural and artificial particles.

Reactivity and Product Analysis of a Pair of Cumyloxyl and tert-Butoxyl Radicals Generated in Photolysis of tert-Butyl Cumyl Peroxide

Alkoxyl radicals play important roles in various fields of chemistry. Understanding their reactivity is essential to applying their chemistry for industrial and biological purposes. Hydrogen-atom transfer and C-C β-scission reactions have been reported from alkoxyl radicals. The ratios of these two processes were investigated using cumyloxyl (CumO^•) and tert-butoxyl radicals (t-BuO^•), respectively. However, the products generated from the pair of radicals have not been investigated in detail. In this study, CumO^• and t-BuO^• were simultaneously generated from the photolysis of tert-butyl cumyl peroxide to understand the chemical behavior of the pair of radicals by analyzing the products and their distribution. Electron paramagnetic resonance and/or transient absorption spectroscopy analyses of radicals, including CumO^• and t-BuO^•, provide more information about the radicals generated during the photolysis of tert-butyl cumyl peroxide. Furthermore, the photoproducts of (3-(tert-butylperoxy)pentane-3-yl)benzene demonstrated that the ether products were formed in in-cage reactions. The triplet-sensitized reaction induced by acetophenone, which is produced from CumO^•, clarified that the spin state did not affect the product distribution.
