Photodissociation Dynamics of Ortho-Substituted Thiophenols at 243 nm

Bond analysis in meta- and para-substituted thiophenols: overlap descriptors, local mode analysis, and QTAIM

CONTEXT

This study delves into the chemical nuances of thiophenols and their derivatives through a comprehensive computational analysis, moving beyond traditional energetic perspectives such as bond dissociation enthalpy and S-H dissociation dynamics. By employing the overlap model along with its topological descriptors (OP/TOP), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and local vibrational mode (LVM) theories, the research provides a deeper understanding of the S-H and C-S bonding scenarios in substituted thiophenols. The investigation follows the electron-donating capacity of S-H substituent variation with the nature and positioning of other ring substituents. Energy profile analyses indicate distinct stability differences in the cis and trans conformations of meta- and para-PhSH systems, influenced by the electron-donating strength of these substituents. The study also uncovers significant variations in S-H bond distances and descriptor values, particularly in para-substituted PhSH, reflecting the influence of electron-donating or withdrawing substituents. In contrast, alterations at the meta-position show minimal effects on C-S bond descriptors, while para-substitutions markedly influence C-S bond characteristics, demonstrating a clear correlation with the electron-donating or withdrawing capabilities of the substituents. This research sheds light on the intricate bond dynamics in aromatic systems with diverse substituents, highlighting the complex interaction between electronic effects and molecular conformation.

METHODS

The study employs the ω B97X-D/Def2TZVP level of theory for molecular geometries, ensuring accurate characterization of structures as true minima via analytical harmonic frequency determination. The electronic properties of S-H and C-S bonds in variously substituted thiophenols were analyzed using OP/TOP, QTAIM, and LVM methodologies. Computational processes, including conformational scans, geometry optimizations, and vibrational frequency calculations, were conducted using Gaussian 09, with ultra-fine integration grids and tight convergence criteria for the SCF procedure. Bond descriptors were computed utilizing ChemBOS, Multiwfn, and LModeA software, providing a robust and detailed examination of bond properties.

Dynamic Role of the Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding in the S1 State Relaxation Dynamics Revealed by the Direct Measurement of the Mode-Dependent Internal Conversion Rate of 2-Chlorophenol and 2-Chlorothiophenol

The dynamic role of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the S1 relaxation of cis-2-chlorophenol (2-CP) or cis-2-chlorothiophenol (2-CTP) has been investigated in a state-specific manner. Whereas ultrafast internal conversion is dominant for 2-CP, the H-tunneling competes with internal conversion for 2-CTP even at the S1 origin. The S0-S1 internal conversion rate of 2-CTP could be directly measured from the S1 lifetimes of 2-CTP-d1 (Cl-C6H4-SD) as the D-tunneling is kinetically blocked, allowing distinct estimations of tunneling and internal conversion rates with increasing the energy. The internal conversion rate of 2-CTP increases by two times at the out-of-plane torsional mode excitation, suggesting that the internal conversion is facilitated at the nonplanar geometry. It then sharply increases at ∼600 cm-1, indicating that the S1/S0 conical intersection is readily accessible at the extended C-Cl bond length. The strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bond should be responsible for the distinct dynamic behaviors of 2-CP and 2-CTP.

Photodegradation of Flutamide and Halogen Derivatives of Nitrobenzotrifluoride: The NO Release Channel

The photodegradation of the nonsteroidal antiandrogen drug flutamide has been long linked to the photoisomerization involving the nitro group. In this work, the dynamics of NO photoelimination upon photolysis at 266 nm of flutamide, nitrobenzotrifluoride, and its halogen derivatives were investigated. Similar to nitrobenzene and its derivatives, a bimodal translational energy distribution was observed for the NO photofragment indicating the presence of two distinct elimination channels resulting in slow and fast components. The trends in the slow/fast branching ratio show that halogen substitution at the para position increases the triplet state yield due to the internal heavy-atom effect leading to enhancement of the fast component. Furthermore, the topology of the triplet state potential energy surface showed that the minimum energy path favors the oxaziridine ring-type intermediate over the NO2 roaming mechanism in all five molecules investigated. The steric interaction between the NO2 group and the CF3 group, which are placed in the ortho position, lowers the barrier for the formation of the oxaziridine transition state compared to that of nitrobenzene.

Modulating the Roaming Dynamics for the NO Release in ortho-Nitrobenzenes

The dynamics of NO release upon photodissociation of nitroaromatic compounds is dependent on the nature of the interaction between the NO₂ group and substituent in the ortho position. A bimodal (slow and fast) translational energy distribution of the NO photofragment indicates the presence of two distinct NO elimination channels. The slow-to-fast branching ratio for the NO release is regulated by the hydrogen bonding ability of the ortho substituent and follows the order [OH > NH₂ > CH₃ > OCH₃], indicating that the intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a pivotal role in NO release dynamics. Further, the topology of the triplet state potential energy surface acts as a doorway to the dissociation pathway switching between the roaming and nonroaming mechanisms, with hydrogen bonding substituents (OH and NH₂) favoring the roaming mechanism.

Electronic Excitation of ortho-Fluorothiophenol

ortho-Fluorothiophenol (o-FTP) photodissociates through the well-known πσ* process. The fluorine atom of o-FTP introduces a feature in the photodissociation of o-FTP that does not occur in most other πσ* processes because the fluorine atom can form a hydrogen bond with the hydrogen atom of the SH group. Theoretical computations can serve as a good way to study these reactions because they usually proceed very quickly, and the current spectroscopies cannot probe the details of the processes as thoroughly as theory can. Here we use completely renormalized equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory with single and double excitations and a quasiperturbative treatment of connected triple excitations (CR-EOM-CCSD(T)) and quasidegenerate perturbation theory, in particular extended multistate complete-active-space second-order perturbation theory (XMS- CASPT2), to calculate the four lowest singlet states of o-FTP and hybrid density functional theory to optimize the geometries of the two lowest singlet states. We find that ten active electrons in nine active orbitals are sufficient to provide a good reference function for all four states. We find that the ground electronic state and the first excited singlet state both exhibit strongly bent hydrogen bonds. We also use density functional theory with the Tamm-Dancoff approximation and the SMD solvation model to successfully simulate the electronic spectrum of o-FTP in n-hexane solvent.

πσ*-Mediated Nonadiabatic Tunneling Dynamics of Thiophenols in S1: The Semiclassical Approaches

The S-H bond tunneling predissociation dynamics of thiophenol and its ortho-substituted derivatives (2-fluorothiophenol, 2-methoxythiophenol, and 2-chlorothiphenol) in S₁ (ππ*) where the H atom tunneling is mediated by the nearby S₂ (πσ*) state (which is repulsive along the S-H bond extension coordinate) have been investigated in a state-specific way using the picosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy for the jet-cooled molecules. The effects of the specific vibrational mode excitations and the SH/SD substitutions on the S-H(D) bond rupture tunneling dynamics have been interrogated, giving deep insights into the multidimensional aspects of the S₁/S₂ conical intersection, which also shapes the underlying adiabatic tunneling potential energy surfaces (PESs). The semiclassical tunneling rate calculations based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation or Zhu-Nakamura (ZN) theory have been carried out based on the ab initio PESs calculated in the (one, two, or three) reduced dimensions to be compared with the experiment. Though the quantitative experimental results could not be reproduced satisfactorily by the present calculations, the qualitative trends among different molecules in terms of the behavior of the tunneling rate versus the (adiabatic) barrier height or the number of PES dimensions could be rationalized. Most interestingly, the H/D kinetic isotope effect observed in the tunneling rate could be much better explained by the ZN theory compared to the WKB approximation, indicating that the nonadiabatic coupling matrix elements should be invoked for understanding the tunneling dynamics taking place in the proximity of the conical intersection.

Photodissociation dynamics of methyl vinyl ketone oxide: A four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediate from isoprene ozonolysis

The electronic spectrum of methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVK-oxide), a four-carbon Criegee intermediate derived from isoprene ozonolysis, is examined on its second π* ← π transition, involving primarily the vinyl group, at UV wavelengths (λ) below 300 nm. A broad and unstructured spectrum is obtained by a UV-induced ground state depletion method with photoionization detection on the parent mass (m/z 86). Electronic excitation of MVK-oxide results in dissociation to O (¹D) products that are characterized using velocity map imaging. Electronic excitation of MVK-oxide on the first π* ← π transition associated primarily with the carbonyl oxide group at λ > 300 nm results in a prompt dissociation and yields broad total kinetic energy release (TKER) and anisotropic angular distributions for the O (¹D) + methyl vinyl ketone products. By contrast, electronic excitation at λ ≤ 300 nm results in bimodal TKER and angular distributions, indicating two distinct dissociation pathways to O (¹D) products. One pathway is analogous to that at λ > 300 nm, while the second pathway results in very low TKER and isotropic angular distributions indicative of internal conversion to the ground electronic state and statistical unimolecular dissociation.

Origins of the photoinitiation capacity of aromatic thiols as photoinitiatiors: a computational study

In this work, we report the photophysical properties of three thiol derivatives, commonly used as photoinitiators in thiol-ene free radical polymerization, the ultimate goal being to rationalize the main reason behind the photoinitiation efficiency. For this aim, time dependent density functional theory is used to simulate the absorption spectra of alkyl thiol (R-SH), thiophenol (PhSH) and p-(trifluoromethyl) thiophenol (p-CF₃PhSH), describe their excited state topologies, and explore their potential energy surfaces along the S-H dissociation. Excited state calculations have shown that the S-H photolysis is achieved through the triplet excited states following intersystem crossing from the originally populated singlet manifolds. More specifically, while in aromatic thiol derivatives dissociation is mainly triplet-state mediated, the first excited singlet state and first triplet state of alkyl thiol are both dissociative and hence potentially capable of generating the photoinduced radical species. We have also justified the experimental findings concerning the photoinitiator efficiency considering both their potential energy surface topologies and the absorption intensity, in the lowest energy region.

S1-State Decay Dynamics of Benzenediols (Catechol, Resorcinol, and Hydroquinone) and Their 1:1 Water Clusters

The S₁-state decaying rates of the three different benzenediols, catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone, and their 1:1 water clusters have been state-specifically measured using the picosecond time-resolved parent ion transients obtained by the pump (excitation) and probe (ionization) scheme. The S₁ lifetime of catechol is found to be short, giving τ ∼ 5.9 ps at the zero-point level. This is ascribed to the H-atom detachment from the free OH moiety of the molecule. Consistent with a previous report (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2013, 4, 3819-3823), the S₁ lifetime gets lengthened with low-frequency vibrational mode excitations, giving τ ∼ 9.0 ps for the 116 cm^-1 band. The S₁ lifetimes at the additional vibronic modes of catechol are newly measured, showing the nonnegligible mode-dependent fluctuations of the tunneling rate. When catechol is complexed with water, the S₁ lifetime is enormously increased to τ ∼ 1.80 ns at the zero-point level while it shows an unusual dip at the intermolecular stretching mode excitation (τ ∼ 1.03 ns at 146 cm^-1). Otherwise, it is shortened monotonically with increasing the internal energy, giving τ ∼ 0.67 ns for the 856 cm^-1 band. Two different asymmetric or symmetric conformers of resorcinol give the respective S₁ lifetimes of 4.5 or 6.3 ns at their zero-point levels according to the estimation from our transients taken within the temporal window of 0-2.7 ns. When resorcinol is 1:1 complexed with H₂O, the S₁ decaying rate is slightly accelerated for both conformers. The S₁ lifetimes of trans and cis forms of hydroquinone are measured to be more or less same, giving τ ∼ 2.8 ns at the zero-point level. When H₂O is complexed with hydroquinone, the S₁ decaying process is facilitated for both conformers, slightly more efficiently for the cis conformer.

Photodissociation Dynamics of CH2OO on Multiple Potential Energy Surfaces: Experiment and Theory

UV excitation of the CH₂OO Criegee intermediate across most of the broad span of the (B ¹A')-(X ¹A') spectrum results in prompt dissociation to two energetically accessible asymptotes: O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) and O (³P) + H₂CO (a ³A''). Dissociation proceeds on multiple singlet potential energy surfaces that are coupled by two regions of conical intersection (CoIn). Velocity map imaging (VMI) studies reveal a bimodal total kinetic energy release (TKER) distribution for the O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products with the major and minor components accounting for ca. 40% and ca. 20% on average of the available energy (E_avl), respectively. The unexpected low TKER component corresponds to highly internally excited H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products accommodating ca. 80% of E_avl. Full dimensional trajectory calculations suggest that the bimodal TKER distribution of the O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products originates from two different dynamical pathways: a primary pathway (69%) evolving through one CoIn region to products and a smaller component (20%) sampling both CoIn regions enroute to products. Those that access both CoIn regions likely give rise to the more highly internally excited H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products. The remaining trajectories (11%) dissociate to O (³P) + H₂CO (a ³A'') products after traversing through both CoIn regions. The complementary experimental and theoretical investigation provides insight on the photodissociation of CH₂OO via multiple dissociation pathways through two regions of CoIn that control the branching and energy distributions of products.

Experimental Observation of the Autler-Townes Splitting in Polyatomic Molecules

Autler-Townes (AT) splitting has been experimentally observed in the optical transition between the zero-point levels of S₁ and S₀ for supersonically cooled 2-methoxythiophenol, 2-fluorothiophenol, and 2-chlorothiophenol. This is the first experimental observation of the light-dressed quantum states of polyatomic molecules (N > 3) in the electronic transition. In the resonance-enhanced ionization process involving the optically coupled states, if Rabi cycling is ensured within the nanosecond laser pulse, AT splitting is clearly observed for the open system for which the excited-state lifetime is shorter than hundreds of picoseconds. Semiclassical optical Bloch equations and a dressed-atom approach based on the three-level atomic model describe the experiment quite well, giving deep insights into the light-matter interaction in polyatomic molecular systems.

Vibronic structure and predissociation dynamics of 2-methoxythiophenol (S1): The effect of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on nonadiabatic dynamics

Vibronic spectroscopy and the S-H bond predissociation dynamics of 2-methoxythiophenol (2-MTP) in the S₁ (ππ^*) state have been investigated for the first time. Resonant two-photon ionization and slow-electron velocity map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopies have revealed that the S₁-S₀ transition of 2-MTP is accompanied with the planar to the pseudoplanar structural change along the out-of-plane ring distortion and the tilt of the methoxy moiety. The S₁ vibronic bands up to their internal energy of ∼1000 cm^-1 are assigned from the SEVI spectra taken via various S₁ vibronic intermediate states with the aid of ab initio calculations. Intriguingly, Fermi resonances have been identified for some vibronic bands. The S-H bond breakage of 2-MTP occurs via tunneling through an adiabatic barrier under the S₁/S₂ conical intersection seam, and it is followed by the bifurcation into either the adiabatic or nonadiabatic channel at the S₀/S₂ conical intersection where the diabatic S₂ state (πσ^*) is unbound with respect to the S-H bond elongation coordinate, giving the excited (Ã) or ground (X̃) state of the 2-methoxythiophenoxy radical, respectively. Surprisingly, the nonadiabatic transition probability at the S₀/S₂ conical intersection, estimated from the velocity map ion images of the nascent D fragment from 2-MTP-d₁ (2-CH₃O-C₆H₄SD) at the S₁ zero-point energy level, is found to be exceptionally high to give the X̃/Ã product branching ratio of 2.03 ± 0.20, which is much higher than the value of ∼0.8 estimated for the bare thiophenol at the S₁ origin. It even increases to 2.33 ± 0.17 at the ν₄₅ ² mode (101 cm^-1) before it rapidly decays to 0.69 ± 0.05 at the S₁ internal energy of about 2200 cm^-1. This suggests that the strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding of S⋯D⋯OCH₃ in 2-MTP at least in the low S₁ internal energy region should play a significant role in localizing the reactive flux onto the conical intersection seam. The minimum energy pathway calculations (second-order coupled-cluster resolution of the identity or time-dependent-density functional theory) of the adiabatic S₁ state suggest that the intimate dynamic interplay between the S-H bond cleavage and intramolecular hydrogen bonding could be crucial in the nonadiabatic surface hopping dynamics taking place at the conical intersection.
