C–H···O Hydrogen Bond Anchored Water Bridge in 1,2,4,5-Tetracyanobenzene-Water Clusters

Nontraditional Redox Active Aliphatic Luminescent Polymer for Ratiometric pH Sensing and Sensing-Removal-Reduction of Cu(II): Strategic Optimization of Composition

Here, redox active aliphatic luminescent polymers (ALPs) are synthesized via polymerization of N,N-dimethyl-2-propenamide (DMPA) and 2-methyl-2-propenoic acid (MPA). The structures and properties of the optimum ALP3, ALP3-aggregate and Cu(I)-ALP3, ratiometric pH sensing, redox activity, aggregation enhanced emission (AEE), Stokes shift, and oxygen-donor selective coordination-reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) are explored via spectroscopic, microscopic, density functional theory-reduced density gradient (DFT-RDG), fluorescence quenching, adsorption isotherm-thermodynamics, and electrochemical methods. The intense blue and green fluorescence of ALP3 emerges at pH = 7.0 and 9.0, respectively, due to alteration of fluorophores from -C(═O)N(CH₃ )₂ / -C(═O)OH to -C(O^- )═N⁺ (CH₃ )₂ / -C(═O)O^- , inferred from binding energies at 401.32 eV (-C(O^- )═N⁺ (CH₃ )₂ ) and 533.08 eV (-C(═O)O^- ), significant red shifting in absorption and emission spectra, and peak at 2154 cm^-1 . The n-π* communications in ALP3-aggregate, hydrogen bondings within 2.34-2.93 Å (intramolecular) in ALP3 and within 1.66-2.89 Å (intermolecular) in ALP3-aggregate, respectively, contribute significantly in fluorescence, confirmed from NMR titration, ratiometric pH sensing, AEE, excitation dependent emission, and Stokes shift and DFT-RDG analyses. For ALP3, Stokes shift, excellent limit of detection, adsorption capacity, and redox potentials are 13561 cm^-1 /1.68 eV, 0.137 ppb, 122.93 mg g^-1 , and 0.33/-1.04 V at pH 7.0, respectively.

High density molecular jets of complex neutral organic molecules with Tesla valves

Supersonic jets of gas-phase atoms and small molecules have enabled a variety of ultrafast and ultracold chemical studies. However, extension to larger, more complex neutral molecules proves challenging for two reasons: (i) Complex molecules, such as cis-stilbene, exist in a liquid or solid phase at room temperature and ambient pressure and (ii) a unidirectional flow of high-density gaseous beams of such molecules to the interaction region is required. No delivery system currently exists that can deliver dense enough molecular jets of neutral complex molecules without ionizing or exciting the target for use in gas-phase structural dynamics studies. Here, we present a novel delivery system utilizing Tesla valves, which generates more than an order-of-magnitude denser gaseous beam of molecules compared to a bubbler without Tesla valves at the interaction region by ensuring a fast unidirectional flow of the gaseous sample. We present combined experimental and flow simulations of the Tesla valve setup. Our results open new possibilities of studying large complex neutral molecules in the gas-phase with low vapor pressures in future ultrafast and ultracold studies.

C-HS interaction exhibits all the characteristics of conventional hydrogen bonds

This is a tale of a pair of a hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, namely the CH donor and sulphur acceptor, neither of which is a conventional hydrogen bond participant. Sulfur (S), being less electronegative (2.58) compared to its first row analogue oxygen (3.44), has not been considered as a potential HB acceptor for a long time. The C-HY (Y = HB acceptor) interaction has its own history of exhibiting omnidirectional shifts in the CH stretching frequency upon complex formation. Therefore, a systematic investigation of the C-HS interaction was the primary goal of the work presented here. Together with gas-phase vibrational spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical calculations, the nature and strength of the C-HS hydrogen bond (HB) have been investigated in the complexes of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) with various sulfur containing solvents. Despite the unconventional nature of both HB donor and HB acceptor (C-H and S, respectively), it was found that the C-HS hydrogen bond exhibits all the characteristics of the conventional hydrogen bond. The binding strength of the C-HS H-bond in these complexes was found to be comparable to that of the conventional hydrogen bonds. The unusual stabilities of these HBs have been mainly attributed to the attractive dispersion interaction.
