Correlations between Fukui Indices and Reactivity Descriptors Based on Sanderson’s Principle

Free radical induced degradation and computational studies of hydroxychloroquine in aqueous solution

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a potential drug molecule for treating malaria. Recently it has also been tried as adjustment in Covid 19 therapy. Interaction of HCQ with free radicals is very important, which controls its stability in the environment where free radicals are generated unintentionally. In this report, we present detailed investigation on the reactions of hydrated electrons (e_aq ^-) and hydroxyl radical (^•OH) with HCQ in aqueous solution through electron pulse radiolysis technique and computational studies. The degradation of HCQ was found to be faster in the case of reaction with ^•OH radicals. However, the degradation could be substantially slowed down in the presence of antioxidants like ascorbic acid and gallic acid. This revealed that the stability of HCQ could be enhanced in an oxidative environment in the presence of these two compounds, which are easily available through food supplements. Various global and local reactivity parameters are also determined to understand the reactivity trend using Hard-Soft Acid-Base (HSAB) principle in the realm of the DFT methods. Computational studies were performed to elucidate the site-specific reactivity trend towards the electrophilic and nucleophilic attack by calculating the condensed Fukui index for various species of HCQ.

Investigation of the corrosion inhibition potentials of some 2-(4-(substituted)arylidene)-1H-indene-1,3-dione derivatives: density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation

Background

Corrosion is a threat to material strength and durability. Electron-rich organic inhibitor may offer good corrosion mitigation potentials. In this work, anti-corrosion potentials of nine derivatives of 1H-indene-1,3-dione have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) approach and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Chemical reactivity descriptors like energies of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO), highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO), electron affinity (A), ionization potential (I), energy gap (ΔEgap), global hardness (η), global softness (σ), electronegativity (χ), electrophilicity (ω), number of transferred electrons (ΔN) and back-donation (ΔEback-donation) were computed at DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) theoretical level. The local reactive sites and the charge partitioning on the compounds were studied using Fukui indices and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface analysis. The adsorption behavior and the binding energy of the inhibitors on Fe (110) surface in hydrochloric acid solution were investigated using MD simulation.

Results

The high chemical reactivity, kinetic instability and good corrosion inhibition potentials demonstrated by the inhibitors are rationalized based on their high EHOMO, A, σ, ΔN, ΔEback-donation, and low ΔEgap, ELUMO, I and η. A wide difference of approximately 2.4–3.2 eV between the electronegativities of iron and the 1H-inden-1,3-diones suggests good charge transfer tendency from the latter to the low-lying vacant d-orbitals of iron. The heteroatoms (O and N) and the aromatic moieties are the nucleophilic sites on the inhibitors for effective adsorption on the metal surface as shown by condensed Fukui dual functions and MEP analysis. The MD simulation shows good interaction and strong binding energy between the inhibitor and Fe (110) surface.

Conclusions

Effective surface coverage and displacement of H3O+, Cl− and water molecules from Fe (110) surface by the inhibitors indicate good corrosion inhibition properties of the inden-1,3-diones. 2-((4,7-dimethylnaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione display low energy gap, strongest binding interaction and most stabilized iron-inhibitor configuration, hence, the best anti-corrosion potential.

On the formation chemistry of brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BrPAHs)

Brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BrPAHs) have been consistently detected in various environmental matrices, and measured at alarming rates in stack emissions. However, formation mechanisms and bromination patterns of BrPAHs remain unclear. This contribution constructs detailed mechanistic pathways for the synthesis of selected BrPAHs (namely bromine-bearing naphthalene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, and phenanthrene). Mapped-out pathways follow the Bittner-Howard's route in the hydrogen abstraction acetylene addition (HACA) mechanism, in which a second C₂HBr molecule is added to the first one. Constructed kinetic model portrays temperature-dependent profiles of major and minor species. Direct loss of an H atom from the acetylenic fragment appears to be more important at elevated temperatures, when compared with further addition of C₂HBr cuts or ring-cyclization reactions. The occurrence of closed-shell Diels-Alder pathway should be inhibited owing to sizable enthalpic barriers. Fukui Indices for electrophilic substitutions (f^-1) establish bromination' s pattern of selected BrPAHs. The diradical character of BrPAHs coupled with electron-deficient C(Br) sites, render BrPAHs as potent precursors for the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). Findings reported herein shall be useful in comprehending the formation chemistry of BrPAHs, a less-investigated category of toxicants in thermal systems.
