Characterization of Host-Guest Complexes of Supramolecular Self-Assembled Cages Using EPR Spectroscopy

Flexible Mesopores in Nanoscrolls: Extraordinarily Large Alteration of Pore Sizes and Their Reversibility

Flexible porous materials have gained considerable interest for their potential applications in selective absorption and controlled release/storage of specific molecules or compounds. Here, nanoscrolls are proposed as a type of inorganic solids with reversibly flexible mesopores. Nanoscrolls exhibit a rolled-up structure composed of nanosheets with a 1D rod-like morphology, possessing two distinct nanospaces. The first space comprises 1D tubular mesopores located at the center of the rod, while the second space exists in the interlayer regions on the wall of the mesopore, resulting from the layer stacking caused by the scrolling of nanosheets. By replacing the interlayer cations on the nanoscroll walls with other cations, a drastic alteration in the size of the 1D mesopores is observed. For instance, exchanging bulky dodecylammonium cations with small NH4 + cations leads to a substantial change in pore size, with differences ranging from 10 to 20 nm-a notably larger variation compared to previous reports on flexible porous materials. Importantly, the alteration of pore size induced by the exchange reaction is found to be reversible. This reversible alteration in pore size holds promise for applications in host-guest chemistry involving large moieties such as nanoparticles and enzymes.

Triple Conductive Wiring by Electron Doping, Chelation Coating and Electrochemical Conversion in Fluffy Nb2 O5 Anodes for Fast-Charging Li-Ion Batteries

High-rate anode material is the kernel of developing fast-charging lithium ion batteries (LIBs). T-Nb₂ O₅ , well-known for its "room and pillar" structure and bulk pseudocapacitive effect, is expected to enable the fast lithium (de)intercalation. But this property is still limited by the low electronic conductivity or insufficient wiring manner. Herein, a strategy of triple conductive wiring through electron doping, chelation coating, and electrochemical conversion inside the microsized porous spheres consisting of dendrite-like T-Nb₂ O₅ primary particles is proposed to achieve the fast-charging and durable anodes for LIBs. The penetrative implanting of conformal carbon coating (derivative from polydopamine chelate) and NbO domains (induced by excess discharging) reinforces the global supply of electronically conductive wires, apart from those from Co/Mn heteroatom or O vacancy doping. The polydopamine etching on T-Nb₂ O₅ spheres promotes their evolution into fluffy morphology with better electrolyte infiltration. The synergic electron and ion wiring at different scales endow the modified T-Nb₂ O₅ anode with ultralong cycling life (143 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 after 8500 cycles) and high-rate performance (144.1 mAh g^-1 at 10.0 A g^-1 ). The permeation of multiple electron wires also enables a high mass loading of T-Nb₂ O₅ (4.5 mg cm^-2 ) with a high areal capacity of 0.668 mAh cm^-2 even after 150 cycles.

Recent advances and perspectives on supramolecular radical cages

Supramolecular radical chemistry has been emerging as a cutting-edge interdisciplinary field of traditional supramolecular chemistry and radical chemistry in recent years. The purpose of such a fundamental research field is to combine traditional supramolecular chemistry and radical chemistry together, and take the benefit of both to eventually create new molecules and materials. Recently, supramolecular radical cages have been becoming one of the most frontier and challenging research focuses in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In this Perspective, we give a brief introduction to organic radical chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and the emerging supramolecular radical chemistry along with their history and application. Subsequently, we turn to the main part of this topic: supramolecular radical cages. The design and synthesis of supramolecular cages consisting of redox-active building blocks and radical centres are summarized. The host-guest interactions between supramolecular (radical) cages and organic radicals are also surveyed. Some interesting properties and applications of supramolecular radical cages such as their unique spin-spin interactions and intriguing confinement effects in radical-mediated/catalyzed reactions are comprehensively discussed and highlighted in the main text. The purpose of this Perspective is to help students and researchers understand the development of supramolecular radical cages, and potentially to stimulate innovation and creativity and infuse new energy into the fields of traditional supramolecular chemistry and radical chemistry as well as supramolecular radical chemistry.
