Self-Propelled Motion of a Camphor Disk on a Nervonic Acid Molecular Layer and Its Dependence on Phase Transition

Certain active particles execute continuous self-propelled motion at the air-water interface due to Marangoni forces. Here, we report motion of camphor and pentanol infused disks in an L-shaped two path and a Y-shaped three path channel. These channels are open to the sink. In both the cases, these channels have asymmetry in arm-lengths while the arm-widths are equal. The active disks are introduced in the decision region (center) of the channel from where they elect to move along a particular path towards the sink. We observe that these active disks show a preference for reaching the sink along the minimal (in length) path. The camphor disk prefers the minimal path 80% of the time in the two-path and 68% of the time in the three-path channels, while for the pentanol disk, the preference rates for the minimal path selection are 88% and 74%, respectively. Furthermore, we perform numerical analysis to validate the experimental observations.

Self-propelled object that generates a boundary with amphiphiles at an air/aqueous interface

A benzoic acid (BA) disk was investigated as a novel self-propelled object whose driving force was the difference in surface tension. 4-Stearoyl amidobenzoic acid (SABA) was synthesized as an amphiphile to control the nature of motion based on intermolecular interactions between BA and SABA. The BA disk exhibited characteristic motion depending on the surface density of the SABA on the aqueous phase, that is, reciprocating motion as a one-dimensional motion and restricted and unrestricted motion as a two-dimensional motion. The trajectory of the reciprocating motion was determined by the initial direction of motion, and the boundary between an aqueous surface and the BA-SABA condensed molecular layer was used as the field's boundary. The presented results indicate that the characteristic nature of motion can be designed at the molecular level based on the intermolecular interactions between an energy-source molecule and an amphiphile.

Nervonic acid reduces the cognitive and neurological disturbances induced by combined doses of D-galactose/AlCl3 in mice

Nervonic acid (NA) is a kind of ultra-long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid, which can repair nerve cell damage caused by oxidative stress. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a nervous system disease and often accompanied by the decline of learning and memory capacity. In this study, the combined dose of D-galactose/AlCl3 was used to establish a mouse model of AD. Meanwhile, the mice were treated with different doses of NA (10.95 and 43.93 mg/kg). The results showed that NA delayed the decline of locomotion and learning ability caused by D-galactose/AlCl3, increased the activity of total superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced the content of malondialdehyde in vivo. Besides, NA reduced the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, increased the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, γ-aminobutyric acid, alleviated the cell morphology damage induced by D-galactose/AlCl3 in hippocampus and liver tissue. Furthermore, the intervention of NA upregulated the expression levels of PI3K, AKT, and mTOR genes and downregulated the expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β genes. Therefore, we speculate the intervention of NA could be an effective way in improving cognitive impairment through the activation of PI3K signaling pathway. These results suggest that NA has the potential to be developed as antioxidant drug for the prevention and early therapy of AD.

Effects of Dufulin on Oxidative Stress and Metabolomic Profile of Tubifex

Dufulin is a highly effective antiviral pesticide used in plants. In this study, a seven-day experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Dufulin at five different concentrations (1 × 10⁻⁴, 1 × 10⁻³, 1 × 10⁻², 0.1, and 1 mg/L) on Tubifex. LC-MS-based metabolome analysis detected a total of 5356 features in positive and 9110 features in negative, of which 41 showed significant changes and were identified as differential metabolites. Four metabolic pathways were selected for further study. Detailed analysis revealed that Dufulin exposure affected the urea cycle of Tubifex, probably via argininosuccinate lyase (ASL) inhibition. It also affected the fatty acid metabolism, leading to changes in the concentration of free fatty acids in Tubifex. Furthermore, the changes in metabolites after exposure to Dufulin at 1 × 10⁻² mg/L were different from those at the other concentrations.
