Voronoi Polyhedra as a Tool for the Characterization of Inhomogeneous Distribution in 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Cation-Based Ionic Liquids

Voronoi Tessellation as a Tool for Predicting the Formation of Deep Eutectic Solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their broad applicability in different fields, but their computer-aided discovery, which avoids a time-consuming trial-and-error investigation, is still lagging. In this paper, a set of nine DESs, composed of choline chloride as a hydrogen-bond acceptor and nine functionalized phenols as hydrogen bond donors, is simulated by using classical molecular dynamics to investigate the possible formation of a DES. The tool of the Voronoi tessellation analysis is employed for producing an intuitive and straightforward representation of the degree of mixing between the different components of the solutions, therefore permitting the definition of a metric quantifying the propensity of the components to produce a uniform solution. The computational findings agree with the experimental results, thus confirming that the Voronoi tessellation analysis can act as a lightweight yet powerful approach for the high-throughput screening of mixtures in the optics of the new DES design.

Widom Line in Supercritical Water in Terms of Changes in Local Structure: Theoretical Perspective

Performing molecular dynamics simulations with the TIP4P/2005 water model along 9 isobars (from 175 to 375 bar) in the temperature range between 300 and 1100 K, we have found that the loci of the extrema in the rate of change of specific structural properties can be used to define purely structure-based Widom lines. We have examined several parameters that describe the local structure of water, such as the tetrahedral arrangement, nearest neighbor distance, local density around the molecules, and the size of the largest dense domain. The last two parameters were determined using the Voronoi polyhedral and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise methods, respectively. By analyzing the moments of the associated distributions, we show that along a given isobar, the temperature at which we observe a maximum in the fluctuation, the rate of change of the average values, or in the skewness values unambiguously determines the Widom line that is in agreement with the experimentally detected, thermodynamic response function-based ones.

Structural, energetic and dynamic investigation of poly(ethylene oxide) in imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different cationic structures

In this work, two imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different cations including dications (DIL) and monocations (MIL) were blended with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The influence of ILs' structure on the structural and dynamic properties of a PEO/IL system was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and density functional theory (DFT) methods. The simulation results show that DIL exhibits weaker interaction with PEO than MIL due to a stronger IL aggregation effect. The intermolecular interaction also makes the PEO chain tend to organize around the imidazolium ring of ILs, which causes the conformational entropy loss. Compared with PEO/MIL, this phenomenon is more significant in PEO/DIL because of the double positive centers of the dication and a longer hydrogen bond lifetime. MD simulation also demonstrates that DIL could act as a "crosslinker" to promote the formation of a physical crosslinking network which has strong dependence on the concentration of IL. The competition between physical crosslinking and plasticizing effects induces non-monotonic variations of relaxation time in PEO/DIL, which is consistent with its unusual change of the glass transition temperature (Tg). Despite stronger hydrogen bonding interactions between PEO and MIL demonstrated by atom-in-molecules (AIM) and reduced density gradient (RDG) analysis, the segmental mobility is slower in PEO/DIL according to the MSD curve. These differences in multiple structural or energetic factors finally lead to different conductive mechanisms and hence obtain different ionic conductivities.

Insight to the Local Structure of Mixtures of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids and Molecular Solvents from Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Voronoi Analysis

While the physicochemical properties as well as the NMR and vibration spectroscopic data of the mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) with molecular solvents undergo a drastic change around the IL mole fraction of 0.2, the local structure of the mixtures pertaining to this behavior remains unclear. In this work, the local structure of 12 mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation (C₄mim⁺) combined with perfluorinated anions, such as tetrafluoroborate (BF₄^-), hexafluorophosphate (PF₆^-), trifluoromethylsulfonate (TFO^-), and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, (TFSI^-), and aprotic dipolar solvents, such as acetonitrile (AN), propylene carbonate (PC), and gamma butyrolactone (γ-BL) is studied by molecular dynamics simulations in the entire composition range, with an emphasis on the IL mole fractions around 0.2. Distributions of metric properties corresponding to the Voronoi polyhedra of the particles (volume assigned to the particles, local density, radius of spherical voids) are determined, using representative sites of the cations, anions, and the solvent molecules, to characterize the changes in the local structure of these mixtures. By analyzing the mole fraction dependence of the average value, fluctuation, and skewness parameter of these distributions, the present study reveals that, around the IL mole fraction of 0.2, the local structure of the mixture undergoes a transition between that determined by the interionic interactions and that determined by the interactions between the ions and solvent molecules. It should be noted that the strength of the interactions between the ions and the solvent molecules, modulated by the change in the composition of the mixture, plays an important role in the occurrence of this transition. The signature of the change in the local structure is traced back to the nonlinear change of the mean values, fluctuations, and skewness values of the metric Voronoi polyhedra distributions.

Anion Effects on the Mixing States of 1-Methyl-3-octylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate and Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide with Methanol, Acetonitrile, and Dimethyl Sulfoxide on the Meso- and Microscopic Scales

The mixing states of two imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (C₈mimBF₄) and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (C₈mimTFSA), with three molecular liquids (MLs), methanol (MeOH), acetonitrile (AN), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), have been investigated on both mesoscopic and microscopic scales using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), infrared (IR), and ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Additionally, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been conducted on the six combinations of ILs and MLs to observe the states of their mixtures on the atomic level. The SANS profiles of the IL-ML mixtures suggested that MeOH molecules only form clusters in both C₈mimBF₄ and C₈mimTFSA, whereas AN and DMSO were homogeneously mixed with ILs on the SANS scale. MeOH clusters are more enhanced in BF₄^--IL than TFSA^--IL. The microscopic interactions among IL cations, anions, and MLs should contribute to the mesoscopic mixing states of the IL-ML mixtures. In fact, the IL cation-anion, cation-ML, anion-ML, and ML-ML interactions observed by IR, NMR, and MD simulations clarified the reasons for the mixing states of the IL-ML binary solutions observed by the SANS experiments. In neat ILs, the imidazolium ring of the IL cation more strongly interacts with BF₄^- than TFSA^- due to the higher charge density of the former. The interaction of anions with the imidazolium ring is more easily loosened on adding MLs to ILs in the order of DMSO > MeOH > AN. It does not significantly depend on the anions. However, the replacement of the anion on the imidazolium ring by an ML depends on the anions; the replacement is more proceeded in the order of MeOH > DMSO > AN in BF₄^--IL, while DMSO > MeOH > AN in TFSA^--IL. On the other hand, the solvation of both anions by MLs is stronger in the order of MeOH > DMSO ≈ AN. Despite the stronger interactions of MeOH with both cations and anions, MeOH molecules are heterogeneously mixed with both ILs to form clusters in the mixtures. Therefore, the self-hydrogen bonding among MeOH molecules most markedly governs the mixing state of the binary solutions among the abovementioned interactions.

Evaluation of static differential capacitance at the [C4mim+][TFSA-]/electrode interface using molecular dynamics simulation combined with electrochemical surface plasmon resonance measurements

Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations have been performed for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C₄mim⁺][TFSA^-]), an ionic liquid (IL), on a charged graphene electrode to achieve the quantitative analysis of the static differential capacitance using the electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (ESPR). The MD simulations have provided the surface charge density on the electrode and ionic distributions in the electric double layer, both of which are indispensable for the evaluation of static differential capacitance using ESPR but are difficult to be measured by experimental techniques. This approach has allowed the quantitative analysis and explanation of the SPR angle shift in ESPR. The major contribution to the SPR angle shift is found to be the change in ionic concentrations of the first ionic layer on the electrode, owing to higher polarizabilities of ions in the first ionic layer than those in the overlayers. Moreover, the ionic orientation on the electrode and ionic multilayer structure have also been investigated in detail. The butyl group of C₄mim⁺ in the first ionic layer is found to provide extra room for C₄mim⁺ in the second ionic layer but exclude TFSA^-, which affects the interval and regularity of ionic multilayers.
