Skeletal Structure of the Chromophore of Photoactive Yellow Protein in the Excited State Investigated by Ultraviolet Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

Ultrafast Raman observation of the perpendicular intermediate phantom state of stilbene photoisomerization

Trans-cis photoisomerization is generally described by a model in which the reaction proceeds via a common intermediate having a perpendicular conformation around the rotating bond, irrespective of from which isomer the reaction starts. Nevertheless, such an intermediate has yet to be identified unambiguously, and it is often called the 'phantom' state. Here we present the structural identification of the common, perpendicular intermediate of stilbene photoisomerization using ultrafast Raman spectroscopy. Our results reveal ultrafast birth and decay of an identical, short-lived transient that exhibits a vibrational signature characteristic of the perpendicular state upon photoexcitation of the trans and cis forms. In combination with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that the photoexcited trans and cis forms are funnelled off to the ground state through the same, perpendicular intermediate.

Riverine microplastics derived from mulch film in Hainan Island: Occurrence, source and fate

Mulch film (MF) residues is an important source of microplastics (MPs) in farmland, but its transportation risk to the wider environment was still unknown. Some researches have pursued the sources of MPs found in exorheic rivers. Even so, a systematic study depicting the occurrence, source and fate of microplastics derived from mulch films (MPMF), the crucial component of MPs in farmlands, in exorheic rivers still lacking. Here, the combination of UV-Vis Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to identify the full-size MPMF (1-5000 μm) in field sediment samples collected by single-diagonal systematic sampling. This study verified that MPMF, a polyethylene-matrix composite doped with additives, contributed a considerable part of MPs detected in upstream farmland soil and riverine sediments, and even had an abundance of 38 ± 11 items/kg to 82 ± 15 items/kg, accounting for 9.0%-13.7% of the total MPs in estuary sediments. Notably, upstream farmland was identified to the main source of the riverine MPMF by partial least square path modeling (PLS-PM), contributing to 94.7% of MPMF in riverside sediments and 85.0% of MPMF in estuary sediments. Our study first demonstrates that MPMF constitutes a non-negligible component of MPs in estuarine sediments and underlines the urgency of strengthening the management of MPs pollution in drainage areas with a high agricultural intensity.

The Influence of Electronic Polarization on Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy

The environment surrounding a chromophore can dramatically affect the energy absorption and relaxation process, as manifested in optical spectra. Simulations of nonlinear optical spectroscopy, such as two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) and transient absorption (TA), will be influenced by the computational model of the environment. We here compare a fixed point charge molecular mechanics model and a quantum mechanical (QM) model of the environment in computed 2DES and TA spectra of Nile red in water and the chromophore of photoactive yellow protein (PYP) in water and protein environments. In addition to simulating these nonlinear optical spectra, we directly juxtapose the computed excitation energy correlation function to the dynamic Stokes shift function often used to analyze environment dynamics. Overall, we find that for the three systems studied here the mutual electronic polarization provided by the QM environment manifests in broader 2DES signals, as well as a larger reorganization energy and a larger static Stokes shift due to stronger coupling between the chromophore and the environment.
