Properties of Hydrogen-Bonded Networks in Ethanol-Water Liquid Mixtures as a Function of Temperature: Diffraction Experiments and Computer Simulations

Outstanding Properties of the Hydration Shell around β-d-Glucose: A Computational Study

Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations have been performed on aqueous solutions of four simple sugars, α-d-glucose, β-d-glucose, α-d-mannose, and α-d-galactose. Hydrogen-bonding (HB) properties, such as the number of donor- and acceptor-type HB-s, and the lengths and strengths of hydrogen bonds between sugar and water molecules, have been determined. Related electronic properties, such as the dipole moments of water molecules and partial charges of the sugar O atoms, have also been calculated. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic shells were characterized by means of spatial distribution functions. β-d-Glucose was found to form the highest number of hydrophilic and the smallest number of hydrophobic connections to neighboring water molecules. The average sugar-water H-bond length was the shortest for β-d-glucose, which suggests that these are the strongest such H-bonds. Furthermore, β-d-glucose appears to stand out in terms of the symmetry properties of both its hydrophilic and hydrophobic hydration shells. In summary, in all aspects considered here, there seems to be a correlation between the distinct characteristics of β-d-glucose reported here and its outstanding solubility in water. Admittedly, our findings represent only some of the important factors that influence the solubility.

What is behind a gas stream scrubbing liquid? Monoethanolamine/water mixtures as seen by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy

High-quality dielectric data for monoethanolamine (MEA)/water mixtures covering the entire miscibility range are presented. For MEA concentrations c1 ≥ 1 M the obtained complex permittivity spectra, covering the frequency range from 0.05 to 89 GHz, are best described by a sum of four Debye relaxations. Modes at ∼3 GHz and ∼10 GHz are solute-specific. Whilst the first can be assigned to MEA aggregates, the second is a composite arising from "free" MEA dipoles with dynamically retarded water hydrating them. The relaxations at ∼18 GHz and ∼200 GHz essentially reflect the cooperative H-bond fluctuations of more-or-less unperturbed "bulk" water, albeit with minor solute contributions. Evaluation of the bulk-water amplitude reveals that in water-rich mixtures (c1 ≤ 3.5 M) Zt = 3.5 ± 0.2 H2O molecules hydrate a MEA molecule. Then Zt drops linearly, reaching zero for neat MEA. Supported by the literature, this concentration dependence suggests that only H2O molecules H-bonded to the NH2 and OH groups of MEA contribute to Zt. At concentrations beyond hydration shell overlap (c1 ≥ 3.5 M) these H-bonds are gradually eliminated, while new interactions with neighboring MEA molecules are formed. From the evaluation of the MEA-specific amplitudes we conclude that for c1 ≥ 2 M, including neat MEA, ∼35% of the solute molecules are in aggregates, where breaking the intermolecular NH⋯O hydrogen bond determines the dynamics.

Molecular Aggregation Behavior and Microscopic Heterogeneity in Binary Osmolyte-Water Solutions

Osmolytes, small organic compounds, play a key role in modulating the protein stability in aqueous solutions, but the operating mechanism of the osmolyte remains inconclusive. Here, we attempt to clarify the mode of osmolyte action by quantitatively estimating the microheterogeneity of osmolyte-water mixtures with the aid of molecular dynamics simulation, graph theoretical analysis, and spatial distribution measurement in the four osmolyte solutions of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), tetramethylurea (TMU), dimethyl sulfoxide, and urea. TMAO, acting as a protecting osmolyte, tends to remain isolated with no formation of osmolyte aggregates while preferentially interacting with water, but there is a strong aggregation propensity in the denaturant TMU solution, characterized by favored hydrophobic interactions between TMU molecules. Taken together, the mechanism of osmolyte action on protein stability is proposed as a comprehensive one that encompasses the direct interactions between osmolytes and proteins and indirect interactions through the regulation of water properties in the osmolyte-water mixtures.

Hydrogen-Bond Configurations of Hydration Water around Glycerol Investigated by HOH Bending and OH Stretching Analysis

Toward a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of glycerol as a moisturizer, studies on the hydrogen-bond (HB) structure of hydration water, which is known to be disordered by glycerol, are insufficient. To this aim, we evaluated the HB configurations based on the HOH bending and OH stretching spectra of the hydration water from those of glycerol/water mixtures by subtracting the contributions of bulk water and glycerol using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Analysis of the HOH bending band showed that hydration water-donating HBs lose the intermolecular bending coupling with increasing glycerol by replacing the water-water HBs with water-glycerol HBs. The OH stretching band provided more detailed insight into the HB configuration, indicating that the double-donor double-acceptor and double-donor single-acceptor configurations in bulk water change to a predominantly double-donor single-acceptor configuration in hydration water around glycerol. The formation of more donor HBs than acceptor HBs may be due to the steric constrains by glycerol and/or differences in the partial charge on the oxygen atom between water and glycerol.

Non-monotonic composition dependence of the breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation for water in aqueous solutions of ethanol and 1-propanol: explanation using translational jump-diffusion approach

A series of experimental and simulation studies examined the validity of the Stokes-Einstein relationship (SER) of water in binary water/alcohol mixtures of different mixture compositions. These studies revealed a strong non-monotonic composition dependence of the SER with maxima at the specific alcohol mole fraction where the non-idealities of the thermodynamic and transport properties are observed. The translational jump-diffusion (TJD) approach elucidated the breakdown of the SER in pure supercooled water as caused by the jump translation of molecules. The breakdown of SER in the supercooled water/methanol binary mixture was successfully explained using the same TJD approach. To further generalize the picture, here we focus on the non-monotonic composition dependence of SER breakdown of water in two water/alcohol mixtures (water/ethanol and water/propanol) for a broad temperature range. In agreement with previous studies, maximum breakdown of SER is observed for the mixture with alcohol mole fraction x = 0.2. Diffusion of the water molecules at the maximum SER breakdown point is largely contributed by jump-diffusion. The residual-diffusion, obtained by subtracting the jump-diffusion from the total diffusion, approximately follows the SER for different compositions and temperatures. We also performed hydrogen (H-)bond dynamics and observed that the contribution of jump-diffusion is proportional to the total free energy of activation of breaking all H-bonds that exist around a molecule. This study, therefore, suggests that the more a molecule is trapped by H-bonding, the more likely it is to diffuse through the jump-diffusion mechanism, eventually leading to an increasing degree of SER breakdown.

Dynamical Anomaly of Aqueous Amphiphilic Solutions: Connection to Solution H-Bond Fluctuation Dynamics?

We have investigated the possible connection between "dynamical anomaly" observed in time-resolved fluorescence measurements of reactive and nonreactive solute-centered relaxation dynamics in aqueous binary mixtures of different amphiphiles and the solution intra- and interspecies H-bond fluctuation dynamics. Earlier studies have connected the anomalous thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures at very low amphiphile concentrations to the structural distortion of water. This is termed as "structural anomaly." Interestingly, the abrupt changes in the composition-dependent average rates of solute relaxation dynamics occur at amphiphile mole fractions approximately twice as large as those where structural anomalies appear. We have investigated this anomalous solution dynamical aspect by considering (water + tertiary butanol) as a model system and performed molecular dynamics simulations at several tertiary butanol (TBA) concentrations covering the extremely dilute to the moderately concentrated regimes. The "dynamical anomaly" has been followed via monitoring the composition dependence of the intra- and interspecies H-bond fluctuations and reorientational relaxations of TBA and water molecules. Solution structural aspects have been followed via examining the tetrahedral order parameter, radial and spatial distribution functions, numbers of H bonds per water and TBA molecules, and the respective populations participating in H-bond formation. Our simulations reveal abrupt changes in the H-bond fluctuations and reorientational dynamics and tetrahedral order parameter at amphiphile concentrations differing approximately by a factor of 2 and corroborates well with the steady-state and the time-resolved spectroscopic measurements. This work therefore explains, following a uniform and cogent manner, both the experimentally observed structural and dynamical anomalies in microscopic terms.

Unexpected molecular dynamics of ethanol in hydrogen-bonded binary mixtures, ethanol-octanol and ethanol-water

In view of getting a quantitative picture of the dynamics in mixtures of hydrogen-bonded liquids, in particular the ternary water-ethanol-octanol, we examine in this paper the dynamics of two binary systems: ethanol-water and ethanol-octanol. Our multiscale investigation includes quasi-elastic neutron scattering for the characterization of the dynamics at the molecular scale, completed by NMR at the mesoscopic scale and eventually compared with macroscopic viscosity properties. We highlight the decrease of diffusivity in pure alcohols when increasing the lengthscale and conjecture its relation with the two processes measured in dielectric spectroscopy. While the behaviour of ethanol-water is well understood, unexpected inversion of the slowest component between the micro and the mesoscale are evidenced in the ethanol-octanol mixture. This effect could be at the origin of the negative viscosity excess in the mixture of alcohols.
