Modeling Solution Behavior of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide): A Comparison between Water Models

Liquid-Vapor Coexistence and Spontaneous Evaporation at Atmospheric Pressure of Common Rigid Three-Point Water Models in Molecular Simulations

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are widely used to investigate molecular systems at atomic resolution including biomolecular structures, drug-receptor interactions, and novel materials. Frequently, MD simulations are performed in an aqueous solution with explicit models of water molecules. Commonly, such models are parameterized to reproduce the liquid phase of water under ambient conditions. However, often, simulations at significantly higher temperatures are also of interest. Hence, it is important to investigate the equilibrium of the liquid and vapor phases of molecular models of water at elevated temperatures. Here, we evaluate the behavior of 11 common rigid three-point water models over a wide range of temperatures. From liquid-vapor coexistence simulations, we estimated the critical points and studied the spontaneous evaporation of these water models. Moreover, we investigated the influence of the system size, choice of the pressure-coupling algorithm, and rate of heating on the process and compared them with the experimental data. We found that modern rigid three-point water models reproduce the critical point surprisingly well. Furthermore, we discovered that the critical temperature correlates with the quadrupole moment of the respective water model. This indicates that the spatial arrangement of the partial charges is important for reproducing the liquid-vapor phase transition. Our findings may guide the selection of water models for simulations conducted at high temperatures.

Thermoresponsive and co-nonsolvency behavior of poly(N-vinyl isobutyramide) and poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) as poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) analogs in aqueous media

Sets of the nonionic polymers poly(N-vinyl isobutyramide) (pNVIBAm) and poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) (pNIPMAm) are synthesized by radical polymerization covering the molar mass range from about 20,000 to 150,000 kg mol−1, and their thermoresponsive and solvent-responsive behaviors in aqueous solution are studied. Both polymers feature a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) apparently of the rare so-called type II, as characteristic for their well-studied analogue poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (pNIPAm). Moreover, in analogy to pNIPAm, both polymers exhibit co-nonsolvency behavior in mixtures of water with several co-solvents, including short-chain alcohols as well as a range of polar aprotic solvents. While the cloud points of the aqueous solutions are a few degrees higher than those for pNIPAm and increase in the order pNIPAm < pNVIBAm < pNIPMAm, the co-nonsolvency behavior becomes less pronounced in the order pNIPAm > pNVIBAm > pNIPMAm. Exceptionally, pNIPMAm does not show co-nonsolvency in mixtures of water and N,N-dimethylformamide.

Interaction-Limited Aggregation: Fine-Tuning the Size of pNIPAM Particles by Association with Hydrophobic Ions

We have investigated the formation of stable clusters of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) chains in water at temperatures above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), induced by the presence of sodium tetraphenylborate, NaPh₄B. The hydrophobic Ph₄B^- ions interact strongly with the pNIPAM chains, providing them with a net effective negative charge, which leads to the stabilization of pNIPAM clusters for temperatures above the LCST, with a mean cluster size that depends non-monotonically on salt concentration. Combining experiments with physical modeling at the mesoscopic level and atomistic molecular dynamic simulations, we show that this effect is caused by the interplay between the hydrophobic attraction between pNIPAM chains and the electrostatic repulsion induced by the associated Ph₄B^- ions. These results provide insight on the significance of weak associative anion-polymer interaction driven by hydrophobic interaction and how this anionic binding can prevent macroscopic phase separation. Harvesting the competition between attractive hydrophobic and repulsive electrostatic interaction opens avenues for the dynamic control of the formation of well-calibrated polymer microparticles.

Phenol release from pNIPAM hydrogels: scaling molecular dynamics simulations with dynamical density functional theory

We employed molecular dynamic simulations (MD) and the Bennett's acceptance ratio method to compute the free energy of transfer, ΔG_trans, of phenol, methane, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), between bulk water and water-pNIPAM mixtures of different polymer volume fractions, ϕ_p. For this purpose, we first calculate the solvation free energies in both media to obtain ΔG_trans. Phenol and 5-FU (a medication used to treat cancer) attach to the pNIPAM surface so that they show negative values of ΔG_trans irrespective of temperature (above or below the lower critical solution temperature of pNIPAM, T_c). Conversely, methane switches the ΔG_trans sign when considering temperatures below (positive) and above (negative) T_c. In all cases, and contrasting with some theoretical predictions, ΔG_trans maintains a linear behavior with the pNIPAM concentration up to large polymer densities. We have also employed MD to compute the diffusion coefficient, D, of phenol in water-pNIPAM mixtures as a function of ϕ_p in the diluted limit. Both ΔG_trans and D as a function of ϕ_p are required inputs to obtain the release halftime of hollow pNIPAM microgels through Dynamic Density Functional Theory (DDFT). Our scaling strategy captures the experimental value of 2200 s for 50 μm radius microgels with no cavity, for ϕ_p ≃ 0.83 at 315 K.

Modified Flory–Rehner Theory Describes Thermotropic Swelling Transition of Smart Copolymer Microgels

In the present article, we use an improved Flory–Rehner theory to describe the swelling behavior of copolymer microgels, where the interaction parameter is modeled by a Hill-like equation for a cooperative thermotropic transition. This description leads to very good fits of the swelling curves of the copolymer microgels at different comonomer contents (30 mol%, 50 mol% and 70 mol%) obtained by photon correlation spectroscopy. Fixed parameters, which are universally applicable for the respective monomers given in our previous work, are used to fit the swelling curves. The analysis of the swelling curves yields physically reasonable and meaningful results for the remaining adjustable parameters. The comonomer content of the statistical copolymer microgels poly(NNPAM-co-NIPAM), poly(NIPAM-co-NIPMAM) and poly(NIPMAM-co-NNPAM) is determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and is in agreement with the nominal comonomer feed used in the synthesis. To investigate the volume phase transition at a molecular level, swelling curves are also measured by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. The obtained swelling curves are also fitted using the Hill-like model. The fits provide physically reasonable parameters too, consistent with the results from photon correlation spectroscopy.
