Asymmetric Lumino-Transformer: Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Chiral Eu(III) Coordination Polymer with Phase-Transition Behavior

Chiral Tetrakis Eu(III) Complexes with Ammonium Cations for Improved Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Large dissymmetry factor of the circularly polarized luminescence (gCPL) was observed in ligand and coordination tuned chiral tetrakis europium (Eu(III)) complexes with ammonium cations. The gCPL value was estimated to be -1.54, which is the largest among chiral luminescent molecules. Through photophysical measurements, single crystal X-ray structural analyses and quantum chemical calculations, changes in the geometric and electronic structures were observed for a series of chiral tetrakis Eu(III) complexes which enhanced the gCPL value. The emission quantum yield and photosensitized energy transfer efficiencies of chiral Eu(III) complexes with ammonium cations were also larger than those of chiral Eu(III) complex with Cs+. Based on the systematic modifications and analyses for chiral tetrakis Eu(III) complex, effect of the ammonium cation on enhanced CPL brightness is reported.

Three derivatives of phenacyldiphenylphosphine oxide: influence of aromatic and alkyl substituents on the luminescence sensitization of four Ln(NO3)3 salts

A series of four β-carbonylphosphine oxide compounds have been synthesized, and their complexes with the nitrate salts of Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ have been characterized in solution and in the solid state. Analysis of the complexes using IR and NMR suggests that metal-ligand binding occurs mainly through the phosphine oxide group of the ligand, with some involvement of the carbonyl group. All 16 complexes luminesce in solutions of acetonitrile, albeit with varying degrees of intensity. The highest quantum yield values obtained for this series are those where the ligand contains an aryl carbonyl group paired with an electron rich phosphine oxide group (29.8 and 11% for the Tb3+ and Eu3+ complexes, respectively). In contrast, the longest emission lifetime values were found for complexes where the ligand contains a bulky substituent on the carbonyl group paired with an electron rich phosphine oxide (1.86, 1.402, 0.045 ms for the Tb3+, Eu3+ and Sm3+ complexes, respectively).

Conglomerate, Racemate, and Achiral Crystals of Polymetallic Europium(III) Compounds of Bis- or Tris-β-diketonate Ligands and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Study

This work reports (a) conglomerate and racemic crystal structures of [(Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ)- or/and (Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ)-Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n coordination polymers, (b) racemic crystal structures of (Δ,Δ,Δ,Δ)-/(Λ,Λ,Λ,Λ)-Eu^III ₄(TTP)₄(bipy)₄(MEK)₂(OH₂)₂ tetrahedral clusters, and (c) the achiral crystal structure of the [Eu^III ₂(BTP)₄(OH₂)₂Na₂] _n coordination polymer (where BTP = dianionic bis-β-diketonate, TTP = trianionic tris-β-diketonate, and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The screw coordination arrangement of the TTP ligand has led to the formation of homoconfigurational racemic Eu^III products. The conglomerate crystallization of [Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n appears to be caused by the presence of the sodium, Na⁺ counterions, and interactions between oxygen atoms and the trifluoromethyl unit of the TTP ligand and Na⁺ ions. All the Eu^III compounds exhibit characteristic red luminescence (⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J, J = 0-4) in solution or in the solid crystalline state. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was observed in the chiral Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n species, displaying a |g _lum| value in the range of 0.15 to 0.68 at the ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₁ emission band. Subtle changes of the [Eu^III ₆(TTP)₈(OH₂)₆Na₄] _n structure which may be due to selection of twinned crystals or crystals that do not correspond to a perfect spontaneous resolution, are considered to be responsible for the variation in the observed CPL values.

Enhanced circularly polarized luminescence of chiral Eu(III) coordination polymers with structural strain

Three types of Eu(III) coordination polymers with different distorted chiral ligands, [Eu(+tfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n, [Eu(+pfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n, and [Eu(+hfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n (+tfc: (+)-3-(trifluoroacetyl)camphorate, +pfc: (+)-3-(pentafluoropropionyl)camphorate, +hfc: (+)-3-(heptafluorobutyryl)camphorate, p-dpeb: 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphorylethynyl)benzene), were prepared for elucidating the relationship between their structural distortions, ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Their strain factors in the ligands were evaluated using crystallographic data obtained by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses. The characteristics of the LMCT excited states were estimated from theoretical calculations. The introduction of a bulky substituent into the chiral ligand afforded a distorted structure of β-diketonates and changed the direction of the transition electric dipole moments, which are related to the magnitude of the CPL intensity. The CPL dissymmetry factor (g_CPL) of [Eu(+hfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n, with a large distorted structure, was -0.22, while those of [Eu(+tfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n and [Eu(+pfc)₃(p-dpeb)]_n, with small distorted structures, were -0.05 and -0.10, respectively. The controlled steric hindrance of the chiral ligands in Eu(III) coordination polymers is one of the strain factors enhancing their CPL properties.
