Accurate Modeling of Bromide and Iodide Hydration with Data-Driven Many-Body Potentials

Systematic improvement of empirical energy functions in the era of machine learning

The impact of targeted replacement of individual terms in empirical force fields is quantitatively assessed for pure water, dichloromethane (CH  2 Cl  2 ), and solvated K  + and Cl  - ions. For the electrostatic interactions, point charges (PCs) and machine learning (ML)-based minimally distributed charges (MDCM) fitted to the molecular electrostatic potential are evaluated together with electrostatics based on the Coulomb integral. The impact of explicitly including second-order terms is investigated by adding a fragment molecular orbital (FMO)-derived polarization energy to an existing force field, in this case CHARMM. It is demonstrated that anisotropic electrostatics reduce the RMSE for water (by 1.4 kcal/mol), CH  2 Cl  2 (by 0.8 kcal/mol) and for solvated Cl  - clusters (by 0.4 kcal/mol). An additional polarization term can be neglected for CH  2 Cl  2 but further improves the models for pure water (by ∼ 1.0 kcal/mol) and hydrated Cl  - (by 0.4 kcal/mol), and is key for solvated K  + , reducing the RMSE by 2.3 kcal/mol. A 12-6 Lennard-Jones functional form performs satisfactorily with PC and MDCM electrostatics, but is not appropriate for descriptions that account for the electrostatic penetration energy. The importance of many-body contributions is assessed by comparing a strictly 2-body approach with self-consistent reference data. Two-body interactions suffice for CH  2 Cl  2 whereas water and solvated K  + and Cl  - ions require explicit many-body corrections. Finally, a many-body-corrected dimer potential energy surface exceeds the accuracy attained using a conventional empirical force field, potentially reaching that of an FMO calculation. The present work systematically quantifies which terms improve the performance of an existing force field and what reference data to use for parametrizing these terms in a tractable fashion for ML fitting of pure and heterogeneous systems.

Entropy of Liquid Water as Predicted by the Two-Phase Thermodynamic Model and Data-Driven Many-Body Potentials

We investigate the entropy of liquid water at ambient conditions using the two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) model, applied to both common pairwise-additive water models and the MB-pol and MB-pol(2023) data-driven many-body potentials. Our simulations demonstrate that the 2PT model yields entropy values in semiquantitative agreement with experimental data when using MB-pol and MB-pol(2023). Additionally, our analyses indicate that the entropy values predicted by pairwise-additive water models may benefit from error compensation between the inherent approximations of the 2PT model and the known limitations of these water models in describing many-body interactions. Despite its approximate nature, the simplicity of the 2PT model makes it a valuable tool for estimating relative entropy changes of liquid water across various environments, especially when combined with water models that provide a consistently robust representation of the structural, thermodynamic, and dynamical properties of liquid water.

Novel Computational Chemistry Infrastructure for Simulating Astatide in Water: From Basis Sets to Force Fields Using Particle Swarm Optimization

Using the example of astatine, the heaviest naturally occurring halogen whose isotope At-211 has promising medical applications, we propose a new infrastructure for large-scale computational models of heavy elements with strong relativistic effects. In particular, we focus on developing an accurate force field for At- in water based on reliable relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To ensure the reliability of such calculations, we design novel basis sets for relativistic DFT, via the particle swarm optimization algorithm to optimize the coefficients of the new basis sets and the polarization-consistent basis set idea's extension to heavy elements to eliminate the basis set error from DFT calculations. The resulting basis sets enable the well-grounded evaluation of relativistic DFT against "gold-standard" CCSD(T) results. Accounting for strong relativistic effects, including spin-orbit interaction, via our redesigned infrastructure, we elucidate a noticeable dissimilarity between At- and I- in halide-water force field parameters, radial distribution functions, diffusion coefficients, and hydration energies. This work establishes the framework for the systematic development of polarization-consistent basis sets for relativistic DFT and accurate force fields for molecular dynamics simulations to be used in large-scale models of complex molecular systems with elements from the bottom of the periodic table, including actinides and even superheavy elements.

Consistent density functional theory-based description of ion hydration through density-corrected many-body representations

Delocalization error constrains the accuracy of density functional theory in describing molecular interactions in ion-water systems. Using Na+ and Cl- in water as model systems, we calculate the effects of delocalization error in the SCAN functional for describing ion-water and water-water interactions in hydrated ions, and demonstrate that density-corrected SCAN (DC-SCAN) predicts n-body and interaction energies with an accuracy approaching coupled cluster theory. The performance of DC-SCAN is size-consistent, maintaining an accurate description of molecular interactions well beyond the first solvation shell. Molecular dynamics simulations at ambient conditions with many-body MB-SCAN(DC) potentials, derived from the many-body expansion, predict the solvation structure of Na+ and Cl- in quantitative agreement with reference data, while simultaneously reproducing the structure of liquid water. Beyond rationalizing the accuracy of density-corrected models of ion hydration, our findings suggest that our unified density-corrected MB formalism holds great promise for efficient DFT-based simulations of condensed-phase systems with chemical accuracy.

MBX: A many-body energy and force calculator for data-driven many-body simulations

Many-Body eXpansion (MBX) is a C++ library that implements many-body potential energy functions (PEFs) within the "many-body energy" (MB-nrg) formalism. MB-nrg PEFs integrate an underlying polarizable model with explicit machine-learned representations of many-body interactions to achieve chemical accuracy from the gas to the condensed phases. MBX can be employed either as a stand-alone package or as an energy/force engine that can be integrated with generic software for molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. MBX is parallelized internally using Open Multi-Processing and can utilize Message Passing Interface when available in interfaced molecular simulation software. MBX enables classical and quantum molecular simulations with MB-nrg PEFs, as well as hybrid simulations that combine conventional force fields and MB-nrg PEFs, for diverse systems ranging from small gas-phase clusters to aqueous solutions and molecular fluids to biomolecular systems and metal-organic frameworks.

Solvent Dynamics of Aqueous Halides before and after Photoionization

Electron transfer reactions can be strongly influenced by solvent dynamics. We study the photoionization of halides in water as a model system for such reactions. There are no internal nuclear degrees of freedom in the solute, allowing the dynamics of the solvent to be uniquely identified. We simulate the equilibrium solvent dynamics for Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, and their respective neutral atoms in water, comparing quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) methods. On the basis of the obtained configurations, we calculate the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra rigorously based on the MD snapshots and compare them in detail with other theoretical and experimental results available in the literature. We find our EXAFS spectra based on QM/MM MD simulations in good agreement with their experimental counterparts for the ions. Classical MD simulations for the ions lead to EXAFS spectra that agree equally well with the experiment when it comes to the oscillatory period of the signal, even though they differ from the QM/MM radial distribution functions extracted from the MD. The amplitude is, however, considerably overestimated. This suggests that to judge the reliability of theoretical simulation methods or to elucidate fine details of the atomistic dynamics of the solvent based on EXAFS spectra, the amplitude as well as the oscillatory period need to be considered. If simulations fail qualitatively, as does the classical MD for the aqueous neutral halogen atoms, the resulting EXAFS will also be strongly affected in both oscillatory period and amplitude. The good reliability of QM/MM-based EXAFS simulations, together with clear qualitative differences in the EXAFS spectra found between halides and their atomic counterparts, suggests that a combined theory and experimental EXAFS approach is suitable for elucidating the nonequilibrium solvent dynamics in the photoionization of halides and possibly also for electron transfer reactions in more complex systems.

Scaled charges for ions: An improvement but not the final word for modeling electrolytes in water

In this work, we discuss the use of scaled charges when developing force fields for NaCl in water. We shall develop force fields for Na⁺ and Cl^- using the following values for the scaled charge (in electron units): ±0.75, ±0.80, ±0.85, and ±0.92 along with the TIP4P/2005 model of water (for which previous force fields were proposed for q = ±0.85 and q = ±1). The properties considered in this work are densities, structural properties, transport properties, surface tension, freezing point depression, and maximum in density. All the developed models were able to describe quite well the experimental values of the densities. Structural properties were well described by models with charges equal to or larger than ±0.85, surface tension by the charge ±0.92, maximum in density by the charge ±0.85, and transport properties by the charge ±0.75. The use of a scaled charge of ±0.75 is able to reproduce with high accuracy the viscosities and diffusion coefficients of NaCl solutions for the first time. We have also considered the case of KCl in water, and the results obtained were fully consistent with those of NaCl. There is no value of the scaled charge able to reproduce all the properties considered in this work. Although certainly scaled charges are not the final word in the development of force fields for electrolytes in water, its use may have some practical advantages. Certain values of the scaled charge could be the best option when the interest is to describe certain experimental properties.

Hydration Structure of Na+ and K+ Ions in Solution Predicted by Data-Driven Many-Body Potentials

The hydration structure of Na⁺ and K⁺ ions in solution is systematically investigated using a hierarchy of molecular models that progressively include more accurate representations of many-body interactions. We found that a conventional empirical pairwise additive force field that is commonly used in biomolecular simulations is unable to reproduce the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra for both ions. In contrast, progressive inclusion of many-body effects rigorously derived from the many-body expansion of the energy allows the MB-nrg potential energy functions (PEFs) to achieve nearly quantitative agreement with the experimental EXAFS spectra, thus enabling the development of a molecular-level picture of the hydration structure of both Na⁺ and K⁺ in solution. Since the MB-nrg PEFs have already been shown to accurately describe isomeric equilibria and vibrational spectra of small ion-water clusters in the gas phase, the present study demonstrates that the MB-nrg PEFs effectively represent the long-sought-after models able to correctly predict the properties of ionic aqueous systems from the gas to the liquid phase, which has so far remained elusive.
