Identification of Ion Pairs in Aqueous NaCl and KCl Solutions in Combination with Raman Spectroscopy, Molecular Dynamics, and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Uncovering the binding nature of thiocyanate in contact ion pairs with lithium ions

Ion pair formation is a fundamental molecular process that occurs in a wide variety of systems, including electrolytes, biological systems, and materials. In solution, the thiocyanate (SCN-) anion interacts with cations to form contact ion pairs (CIPs). Due to its ambidentate nature, thiocyanate can bind through either its sulfur or nitrogen atoms, depending on the solvent. This study focuses on the binding nature of thiocyanate with lithium ions as a function of the solvents using FTIR, 2D infrared spectroscopy (2DIR) spectroscopies, and theoretical calculations. The study reveals that the SCN- binding mode (S or N end) in CIPs can be identified through 2DIR spectroscopy but not by linear IR spectroscopy. Linear IR spectroscopy shows that the CN stretch frequencies are too close to one another to separate N- and S-bound CIPs. Moreover, the IR spectrum shows that the S-C stretch presents different frequencies for the salt in different solvents, but it is related to the anion speciation rather than to its binding mode. A similar trend is observed for the anion bend. 2DIR spectra show different dynamics for N-bound and S-bound thiocyanate. In particular, the frequency-frequency correlation function (FFCF) dynamics extracted from the 2DIR spectra have a single picosecond exponential decay for N-bound thiocyanate and a biexponential decay for S-bound thiocyanate, consistent with the binding mode of the anion. Finally, it is also observed that the binding mode also affects the line shape parameters, probably due to the different molecular mechanisms of the FFCF for N- and S-bound CIPs.

Vibrational Self-Consistent Field (VSCF) and Post-VSCF Method Calculations Combined with the Reference Interaction Site Model Self-Consistent Field Method Coupled with the Constrained Spatial Electron Density Distribution: Applications to NaHCOO in Aqueous Phase

Investigating vibrational behavior in solution is crucial for understanding molecular dynamics within a solvent environment. Notably, the analysis of Raman spectra for molecules in solution is important owing to its ability to unveil intricate solute-solvent interactions. Previous studies have effectively employed frequency calculations utilizing the reference interaction site model self-consistent field method in conjunction with constrained spatial electron density distribution (RISM-SCF-cSED) to understand molecular vibrations in solution, primarily focusing on fundamental vibrational modes. However, the oversight of overtones and combination tones in these studies prompted us to combine the vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) and vibrational second-order Mo̷ller-Plesset perturbation (VMP2) methods with RISM-SCF-cSED to address these aspects theoretically. Illustrating the efficacy of this integrated approach, we computed the Raman spectra of sodium formate (NaHCOO) in water, revealing the necessity of accounting for molecular anharmonicity in solution vibrational analysis. Our findings underscore the potency of VSCF and VMP2 in conjunction with RISM-SCF-cSED as a robust theoretical framework for such calculations.

Variation of Surface Propensity of Halides with Droplet Size and Temperature: The Planar Interface Limit

The radial number density profiles of halide and alkali ions in aqueous clusters with equimolar radius ≲1.4 nm, which correspond to ≲255 H2O molecules, have been extensively studied by computations. However, the surface abundance of Cl-, Br-, and I- relative to the bulk interior in these smaller clusters may not be representative of the larger systems. Indeed, here we show that the larger the cluster is, the lower the relative surface abundance of chaotropic halides is. In droplets with an equimolar radius of ≈2.45 nm, which corresponds to ≈2000 H2O molecules, the polarizable halides show a clear number density maximum in the droplet's bulk-like interior. A similar pattern is observed in simulations of the aqueous planar interface with halide salts at room temperature. At elevated temperature the surface propensity of Cl- decreases gradually, while that of I- is partially preserved. The change in the chaotropic halide location at higher temperatures than the room temperature may considerably affect photochemical reactivity in atmospheric aerosols, vapor-liquid nucleation and growth mechanisms, and salt crystallization via solvent evaporation. We argue that the commonly used approach of nullifying parameters in a force field in order to find the factors that determine the ion location does not provide transferable insight into other force fields.
