Abstract
Amorphous and melted components can segregate into the interlamellar or interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals in their blends/mixtures; this phase behavior strongly influences the physical properties and functions of materials. However, it is experimentally difficult to evaluate the spatial distributions of the other components in polymer crystals. Herein, we use a small-molecule liquid crystal (LC) as a probe and find that it forms different solid phases when mixed with the semicrystalline polymer poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA). The LC can form the metastable phase at the lower PLLA crystallization temperature but the stable phase at the higher PLLA crystallization temperature in the PLLA/LC mixture. The formation of LC metastable and stable phases is attributed to the segregation of the LC material in the interlamellar and interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals, respectively. This study provides a potential way to evaluate the spatial segregation in the crystallization-induced microphase separation of polymer blends/mixtures.

Fluorinated Tolane Dyads with Alkylene Linkage: Synthesis and Evaluation of Photophysical Characteristics. CRYSTALS 2020. Abstract
Light-emitting materials have received considerable attention because of their broad applications as substrates in bio-imaging and sensing components, light-emitting displays, and lighting devices. Herein, we developed fluorinated tolane and bistolane derivatives containing fluorinated aromatic rings and demonstrated their intense photoluminescence (PL) characteristics in crystalline powder states. We focused on molecules showing varied PL behavior with a change in the molecular aggregated structures. We synthesized novel fluorinated tolane dyads consisting of fluorinated tolane-based π-conjugated scaffolds and flexible alkylene linkages to control both the electron-density distribution and molecular aggregated states. Fluorinated tolane dyads connected with an alkylene linkage showed blue PL in a dilute solution, but the PL efficiency achieved was low. In contrast, the crystalline powder of tolane dyad substrates exhibited dual emission—relatively intense blue to deep blue PL—originating from monomer and aggregate emission. The PL behavior changed significantly with the alkylene linkage and the application of a mechanical stimulus to the crystalline powder sample. The fluorinated tolane dyads developed in this study could serve as stimulus-responsive photoluminescent materials suitable for optical applications.

Abstract
We report here on a series of redox active benzothiadiazole-based luminophores functionalized on one edge with a phenyl-nonyl substituent, which confers these molecules a rodlike shape and a tendency to self-assemble into layered superstructures. On the other edge, the molecules are endowed with different p-substituted phenyl rings, which allows the modulation of their redox and optical properties on the basis of the electronic nature of the terminal substituents. We have found that just one lateral alkyl chain is sufficient to induce mesomorphism in these molecules, which present nematic or smectic mesophases upon thermal treatment. Single-crystal analysis allows us to get an insight into the nature of the forces responsible for different supramolecular assemblies in these derivatives, and point to a strong contribution of the terminal groups in the different arrangements observed. The interesting redox and optical properties together with their self-assembling tendencies render these new materials interesting candidates for optoelectronics.

Abstract
This article gives an overview on recent developments concerning the twist-bend nematic phase. The twist-bend nematic phase has been discussed as the missing link between the uniaxial nematic mesophase (N) and the helical chiral nematic phase (N*). After an introduction discussing the key physical properties of the NTB phase and the methods used to identify the twist-bend nematic mesophase this review focuses on structure property relationships and molecular features that govern the incidence of this phase.
