Fine-Tuning of Electronic Structure of Cobalt(II) Ion in Nonplanar Porphyrins and Tracking of a Cross-Hybrid Stage: Implications for the Distortion of Natural Tetrapyrrole Macrocycles

Nonplanar porphyrins: synthesis, properties, and unique functionalities

Porphyrins are variously substituted tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, with wide-ranging biological and chemical applications derived from metal chelation in the core and the 18π aromatic surface. Under suitable conditions, the porphyrin framework can deform significantly from regular planar shape, owing to steric overload on the porphyrin periphery or steric repulsion in the core, among other structure modulation strategies. Adopting this nonplanar porphyrin architecture allows guest molecules to interact directly with an exposed core, with guest-responsive and photoactive electronic states of the porphyrin allowing energy, information, atom and electron transfer within and between these species. This functionality can be incorporated and tuned by decoration of functional groups and electronic modifications, with individual deformation profiles adapted to specific key sensing and catalysis applications. Nonplanar porphyrins are assisting breakthroughs in molecular recognition, organo- and photoredox catalysis; simultaneously bio-inspired and distinctly synthetic, these molecules offer a new dimension in shape-responsive host-guest chemistry. In this review, we have summarized the synthetic methods and design aspects of nonplanar porphyrin formation, key properties, structure and functionality of the nonplanar aromatic framework, and the scope and utility of this emerging class towards outstanding scientific, industrial and environmental issues.

Yolk-shell Ni/NiO anchored on N-doped graphene synthesized as dual-ion MALDI matrix for detecting and imaging bioactive small molecules

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is an attractive tool to analyze the bioactive small molecules but remains a great challenge owing to the serious background interference from conventional matrix with m/z < 1000. Herein, we reported a dual-ion MALDI matrix of yolk-shell Ni/NiO nanoparticles anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene (Ni/NiO/N-Gr) to enhance MALDI performance. The Ni/NiO/N-Gr was synthesized via the pyrolysis and controllable oxidation strategy based on the nanoscale regulation of Kirkendall effect. The novel matrix showed the superior behavior for the analysis of various small molecular metabolites (amino acids, saccharides, spermidine, creatinine, hippuric acid, dopamine, and ascorbic acid) with high sensitivity, excellent salt tolerance, and favorable reproducibility in dual-ion modes compared to the traditional α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA) and control substances (Ni/N-Gr and NiO/N-Gr). Meanwhile, we have realized accurate quantitation of blood glucose in mice with a linearity concentration range of 0.2-7.5 mM and qualitative detection of various endogenous small molecular metabolites in mice serum and urine samples. Especially, the Ni/NiO/N-Gr assisted LDI MS imaging (MSI) has exhibited the excellent spatial distribution of lipids in hippocampus region of mice brain. These results may provide an approach to explore the MALDI MS and MSI applications in clinical diagnosis.

Plant polyphenols induced the synthesis of rich oxygen vacancies Co3O4/Co@N-doped carbon hollow nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion

Reasonable hollow structure design and oxygen vacancy defects control play an important role in the optimization of electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalytic properties. Herein, a plant polyphenol tannic acid was used to etch Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) followed by calcination to prepare a porous Co₃O₄@Co/NC hollow nanoparticles (Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN) with rich oxygen vacancy defects. Owing to the metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), rich oxygen vacancy defects and the synergistic effect between Co₃O₄ and Co/NC, the box-like Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN nanomaterials with large specific surface areas exhibit excellent supercapacitor performance and electrocatalytic activity. As expected, Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN shows high specific capacity (273.9 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1) and remarkable rate performance. Moreover, the assembled Hybrid supercapacitor (HSC, Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN//Active carbon) device obtained a maximum energy density of 57.8 Wh kg^-1 (800 W kg^-1) and exhibited superior cycle stability of 92.6% after 4000 cycles. Notably, as an electrocatalyst, the nanocomposites exhibit small overpotential and Tafel slope. These results strongly demonstrate that both unique hollow structure and abundant oxygen vacancies designed from plant polyphenols provide superiorities for the synthesis of efficient and green multifunctional electrode materials for energy storage and conversion.

Chirogenesis in Zinc Porphyrins: Theoretical Evaluation of Electronic Transitions, Controlling Structural Factors and Axial Ligation

In the present work, sixteen different zinc porphyrins (possessing different meso substituents) with and without a chiral guest were modelled using DFT and TD-DFT approaches in order to understand the influence of various controlling factors on electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Geometric deconstruction of core and electron activation of a π-system in a series of deformed porphyrins: mimics of heme

The predominant distortion of heme is responsible for its electronic activity, catalytic ability and spectral properties. In this work, altogether 12 new X-ray structures of saddled, waved and ruffled porphyrins are reported. Three types of deformed porphyrins as mimics of heme were evaluated and analyzed by geometric deconstruction, spectral comparison, and electrochemical tracking, which shows a unique relationship of deformation fashions and distortion degree to the geometry of the core and electron transfer ability of rings in these enzyme containing porphyrins. These mimics can adjust their core geometry for changing the structures of potential metals; while for rings themselves, they can also regulate the electron activity by switching the HOMO of the large π systems. These deformed porphyrins can be used as ideal mimics for heme. These findings help us to understand the principle and contribution of these deformations to electron transfer in catalytic oxidation and photoreactions. The nonplanar mimics have been synthesized through a modular synthetic approach under Adler-Longo or Lindsey condensation conditions.

Optical activity of Co-porphyrin in the light of IR and Raman spectroscopy: A critical DFT investigation

A critical investigation on the structure, electronic properties and optical activities of a series of transition metal doped porphyrins (TMP; TM=Fe, Co, Ni) in the light of infrared and Raman spectroscopy is performed, under density functional formalism. The structure and electronic properties are studied in terms of ionization potential, electron affinity, chemical hardness (η), binding energies of the transition metals (BE_TM) etc. The origin of the optical activities, especially the visibly active cobalt porphyrin is addressed through critical study on their infrared and Raman spectra. The information availed from the spectral analysis will certainly ease their possible synthesis and useful applications in the sensor and optoelectronic domains.

Electron Transfer and Geometric Conversion of Co-NO Moiety in Saddled Porphyrins: Implications for Trigger Role of Tetrapyrrole Distortion

The electrons of NO and Co are strongly delocalized in normal {Co-NO}⁸ species. In this work, {Co-NO}⁸ complexes are induced to convert from (Co^II)^+•-NO^• to Co^III-NO^- by a core contraction of 0.06 Å in saddled cobalt(II) porphyrins. This intramolecular electron transfer mechanism indicates that nonplanarity of porphyrin is involved in driving conversion of the NO units from electrophilic NO^• as a bent geometry to nucleophilic NO^- as a linear geometry. This implies that distortion acts as a trigger in enzymes containing tetrapyrrole. The electronic behaviors of the Co^II ions and Co-NO moieties were confirmed by X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, theoretical calculation, UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, and electrochemistry.

Spacer length dependent architectural diversity in bis-dipyrrin copper(ii) complexes

A series of copper(ii) complexes (1-9 and 3') derived from bis-dipyrrin ligands (L1-L9 and L3') with diverse spacer lengths [-(CH₂)_n-] have been described. Structural diversities in these complexes have been explicitly established by spectral and structural studies on these and a closely related nickel(ii) complex (3''). All the ligands and complexes have been thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic studies (ESI-MS, IR, ¹H, ¹³C NMR, UV/vis) and structures of 2, 3', 3'', 6, 8 and 9 were determined by X-ray single crystal analyses. It has been unambiguously established that ligands with n ≤ 6 gave heteroleptic binuclear (1-5), while those with n ≥ 7 yielded homoleptic mononuclear (6-9) bis-dipyrrinato complexes. Spectral and structural studies revealed distorted square planar (1-5) and distorted tetrahedral geometries (6-9) about the copper(ii) centre in these complexes which has further been evidenced by EPR and electrochemical studies. Structural differences based on the odd and even number of methylene spacers in these complexes have been supported by DFT studies. A line between the syn- and anti-conformations of the complexes has been drawn on the basis of a limiting spacer length.
